So do you think NYS will expand the crossbow season
stubby68 replied to MACHINIST's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Bow hunters always say they like the challenge of using a bow to hunt and kill a deer. If this is true then why do they have a problem with guns or other things in the woods while they are hunting? If deer instantly go into hiding and get harder to hunt when gun starts season Wouldn't it be an even bigger challenge to to hunt with a bow while others are hunting with a gun? I would love a one season you chose the weapon you want to use. Then we would see who really wants a challenge. -
Grow I live within a couple miles of lots of windmills. Have been seeing lots of birds. I hunt around them every spring. Never a problem have seen birds feeding under them as well as have gotten a few within yards of them. Some years I have better luck under the windmills then in other spots.

So do you think NYS will expand the crossbow season
stubby68 replied to MACHINIST's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Do we want one long any implement deer season? Yep that would be great. Wounder how many guys would drop there bow and go with guns. I bet quite a few. I see nothing wrong crossbow and think that in 2 years tops you will see all of archery. -
Now that's funny right there. Before someone jumps on me. All lives matter but you gotta addmitt that is funny.
-
Do you mean color fazes as white or pibald as other have mentioned? Or do you mean the color changes they go through in the spring as from very light to very dark? Over the years I have seen light tan, red to almost maroon and very dark that look black. On the other side I have seen white pibald and redish during season but never black that would be cool.

congrats. always a good day when hunting recieves a new member.

I am pretty fair with a bolt gun myself but if you think that the bolt guns compare to and AR, let me ask you this? Why did the military go to them then? Why not stay with the bolt actions they had in service? Was it just because of the rate of fire? I know the majority of the sniper weapons are bolts and I get the whole make the first shot count attitude. But if quick accurate follow ups aren't a concern then why not just use a single shot? Why do we need bolts? Or pumps or lever actions ? I can't believe that you can't find one reason given for owning one valid other that the person needs to feel bad ass. Actually the AR was adopted by the military for trench war fair. That would be close range combat. They ar short, light weight, have rapid fire, single and 3 round burst capabilities and there ability to use large capacity mags. The can also be broken down and repaird with parts from another rifle quickly while in the field. This would seem to mean that accuracy was low priority on there lists or reasons for adopting th AR. I have several single shots and use those more often then my other guns. I have also stated that when useing my other guns I load no more then 2 rounds and have not need the second one sense I was 17. If the Ar is so accurate then any person can just pick one up and shoot 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards even if they can not hit the side of a barn at 20 feet with another gun right? Mind you I am not saying they can not be shot accurately but I stand by the fact that is is the shooter not the gun that makes the accuracy. If they were the be all end all of accuracy as everyone claims why do snipers not use them for snipping and why do they go throught all the training. Everyone can be a sniper if they pick up an AR. No I can not find one valid reason for owning or hunting with an AR. Other then the need to feel bad ass with it in my hand. Mind you I am not saying they should not be able to own or even hunt with one. We have a right to bare arms and to me that means any. Just say you own one because you can and you hunt with it cause it looks bad ass. I am good with that. To say they are better then anyother gun for hunting is a bs excuse. If you can kill a deer with a non AR rifle how can you kill it better with an AR. Also the civilian version of they AR is a far cry from they military. Military AR rifles are lighter ( by about 2 pounds) have many more options have many other different things for combat. If the military was handed the civilian version of the AR when they were adopted then they would never have been used by them. The civilian version looks like the military and that is the draw for most. Does anyone who owns an AR even know what AR stands for? I am thinking yes but just have to ask. Again I have no problem with someone owning or using any legal gun AR or non AR. Just a problem with the excuses given for owning or using rather then giving an actual reason.
-
His original question was answered with a bs answer. An AR is more accurate? If I shoot a bulls eye at 300 yards with my Mossy 308 and you shoot a bulls eye at 300 yards with your AR they both have the same accuracy right? Or is a bulls eye with an AR better then with any other gun? Some one also said they liked them because if they needed a second shot they didn't want to fumble around with a bolt. I can cycle a bolt plenty fast and never take my eyes off the target so I fail how some one would have to fumble with a bolt. If they do then they need to learn how to use a bolt action weapon.Every reason given for useing an AR described what any semi is used for so all they did is answer why use a seni not specifically why use an AR. Those answered seemed more like a tap dance around the real answer. They look bad ass and we feel bad ass using them. That is an answer I could live with and I think Belo would have been good with that as well. Saying that the second question should have been a statement that no one should not be aloud to use those just means you are reading words into the post. How by reading can anyone think it is more then a simple question. Did he make statements against AR rifles? yes eventually but not until he was attacked and pushed. When he got what he felt was a good answer to his question he said thank and seemed to drop it yet others decided he ment more then he wrote and proded him. This derail has gone on far too long and feel we should just let it die so I will now bow out. I am sure we will find something else to argue about in no time at all.

Vjp this is why I said we have to take back our rights. Shakeing a gun in there face does nothing to stop them it just serves to push them to take more of our guns. We need to stop them not give them a reason to go further. I suppoort all gun owner ship how ever I do not support saying we need certain things because they are better. Say you want it and have a right to have it . Making an excuse for owning it is the same as saying to them they are right I do not need it. Posted Today, 10:04 AM Thats just it. I think he is against owning AR's for hunting. In a previous post he said that he didn't think AR's were doing us much good in the deer woods and a lot of his points are focused on the looks of AR's and the ability for them to accept hi cap mags He might be. However this statement was made after he was attacked and was defending himself. His original question did not even imply that he was against AR rifles. This question was attacked and not one person could say that it was an attack for anything other then some one thinking he disagreed with him. An assumption they had no reason to think at that time.
-
His question should have been answered with another question. "Why would you ask such a question? Would you ask a man to justify any of his other preferences with the same disdain?" I think that is a question no gun owner should ever ask unless he wants to admit he's against owning an AR for hunting in the first place I saw no disdainin his question i see a question asked by some one trying to be further educated as to why some people use them. Could be he was thinking of useing one himself and was looking for input to help him make a desision. There have been many threads asking what gun should I get and why. So why is his question asking why some one uses an Ar any different? Asking some one why they chose a certain gun is no different then asking them why the use a certain lawn mower or drive a certain truck. Why would it be wrong for me to ask you why you use what you do for hunting. I have no problem with some one asking me that I just answer with because that is what I like to use.
-
VJP I agree they will never stop and will always come after our guns ( all of them). Not antagonizing them in not accepting defeat. It is not giving them a reason to speed up there attack on our rights. No one in this thread said they should not be owned or hunted with. AT no time did anyone say that. Just because someone said they didn't see a need for hunting with one does not mean they do not think they should be owned or used. ( Those rifle can hunt, no doubt about it, but they are also great for defense, and that's what the owner's are aware of when they buy one. The right to self defense with a modern firearm is protected by the 2A, so anyone with issues over people owning one for hunting or not, is promoting the elimination of your 2A rights.) Those rifles can not hunt in fact no gun can hunt. Just like when antis claim the gun does the killing. as we all know it in the person who does the hunting and the killing. A person holds the gun, the person aims and shoots the gun, it does not matter what the gun is if you can not aim or shoot then the gun is no better then anyother. To say the gun is better for hunting or defense then anyother gun makes no sense. If you can not kill a deer or defend with a regular rifle then why is it easier to do with an AR. I have no problem with someone owning anything they legally can for anyreason they legally can .The people in LA during the riots and the people of Ferguson MO that had them still have their stores and their properties. I'll bet they are glad they had them. Are you saying that all the people who still have there stores had them and that the ones who did not had other guns like bolt actions? This sounds like you are saying that a store owner with any gun other then an AR lost or would have lost there store or properties. Are you saying they could not have defended themselfs with any other gun? In the end we are going to have to take back our rights because they deffently will not be given back. As you said there is no reasoning with the gun banners. Right now the gun banners have the power ( as they have Showed us with the bans the have gotten already) so why keep pushing them to show us how much more power they have? We need to keep what we have and take back what we have lost.

He asked a question in which he stated a fact he was attacked for. The AR was not ment to be a hunting rifle. It started being used for that purpose. It was ment to make money in the self defense department and war department. When the AR platform was advertised to the public for the first it was not seen as or said to be the next great hunting rifle so where was he wrong in stating that. I nor he are argueing one should not be able to use what one wants as long as legal. As I said he asked a question and was attacked. Then he tried to explain why he asked said question and was attacked for that. If some one had of said we use them because they are cool and can, right away this thread would probably have died a short life. He finally did get and answer he was happy with but by that point he already had started defending himself and rigtfully so. If his question had of been attacked first instead of attacked he would have had no need to defend himself and there would not have been a derail. If people thought he was trying to derail things with his question then why even respond. Could have ignored it and moved on he might have just gone away. The attacking someone for ther opinions is where these threads get derailed most of the time. In both posts you quoted he said not trying to start a debate and that he was not arguing and was curious. I kind of see that as asking not to be attacked just answered.

Hello as others have said DEC web site for places to hunt. There are lots of good areas to hunt that are not very far from you. This is a good place to get advice and help. Good luck and welcome to hunting.

All of our trails are good enough for a truck as we need wide trails for the ranger to get through the woods. They use to be walking or 4 wheeler size but when got ranger we had to spend a few months makeing wider.

Belo asked a question as to why people use an AR to hunt deer and instead on a good answer he was immediately attacked. That right there speeks to the mentality of most AR users. This is what the public sees and remembers because that is what the media and others throw in there face every day. They are only shown the bad never the good and that is what they know and remember. This is why we should worry about what they think and try to change it and show them it is not all evil. Holding your AR up high and saying this is mine and you can not take it will not work and as we have learned it does not work. If they see it as evil and want it they will take it. We need to show them and educate them to the fact that it is no different then any other hunting rifle and that may not even work. We may just have to pick up our guns and take back our rights as we did many many many years ago.

Guys keep bringing up the color of the weapons. Why? color has nothing to do with it. Black, brown, or camo the general public sees them as a military stile weapon this is why these typ of guns are always under attack. To think that most people wouldn't not know if the hunter in a pic was using an AR or not unless they were told is foolish. They may not know what type or calliber but they would know is as an AR. As Belo said you proved my point most Ar plat form rifles are bought for the cool factor. I've felt that way about every gun I purchased. My "coolest" looking gun is my Winchester '73 reproduction. Who ever purchased a gun because they thought it was "ugly." Aesthetics is a factor in most things we buy. "Hey friend, c'mon over and see the new gun I got. Isn't it the ugliest thing you ever saw? I'm embarrassed to leave the house with it! But it was expensive and not very accurate, so i just had to buy it." I don't think so. Liking the look/feel of a gun is a far cry from your original "rambo wannabe" assertion. This as well proves my point. Thanx. I have never bought a gun because it looked cool. In fact looking cool is the last thing I think of when buying anything. I buy things that serve a function for me not make me look cool. I do not call my friends and tell them about the new cool gun I just bought. If they see me useing it then they know I bought a new on. I do not have a need to let other people know about all the cool guns I have. Like I said most of those who own AR rifles call there friends and say I just got a cool gun come see it. The need to show off these guns is part of the problem with them. Culver being the most popular platform in the country just means that everyone has to have what is seen as the cool new thing. This will pass just as soon as they start attacking another gun. Then everyone will run out and buy them and scream don't tell me what I can not own. I am against the safe act and feel that if someone wants to own and hunt with an AR then they have the right to do so. However with the attack on the AR and the 2 amendment holding these guns up and shakeing them in the faces of those against them is doing our cause no help what so ever. These guns are being attacked because they are reconised by many as being a military killing weapon and they do not understand why someone needs that for hunting. the antis just do not care they see a gun and want all guns gone. It is easy for them to point at an Ar and say looking a killing machine and gain support for there cause. Not as easy for them to say that about a shot gun or traditional rifle. They can and are use the AR to start taking all guns. If someone wants to use an AR to hunt deer fine just do not say you use it for reasons other then it is cool looking. When there are many other guns out there that can be used to kill deer just as affectively. saying the Ar is better for hunting for what ever reason you want holds no water. That is like going out and paying $1500 for a deer gun when you can do the same thing with a $500 gun. The expensive gun was not bought necause it was actually better it was bought because you wanted it and it looks fancy and cool to have it. I am not against AR rifles just against the bs reasons people give to justify useing one. Use one if you want just do not complain when someone says you look foolish carrying it in the woods or asks why it is need for killing deer. You know how much of this country feels about them so expect it. I am not saying you shouldnt own one if you want or that you should hide it. Just do not shove it in there face or give a bs reason for haveing it. Taunting the freedom thieves is not the way to get our rights back. When we do finally get them back we will have to take then back. The taunting that is going on now is just making things worse for gun owners.
-
What is bs about it be honest about the first thing when you saw you first AR. You said it looked cool didn't you? When you bought your first AR you said to your friends look at my new gun looks cool doesn't it? I do not care if you or anyone else owns one just do not say you need it or that it is better for hunting then any of your other guns. The only bs is you getting upset when the real reason you want an AR is pointed out.

For Stubby --I guess those evil rifles like the Enfield, Garand, Mauser and any listing of shotguns used during WW2 would make those carrying them Patton wannbees? When you see pictures of soldiers on the news they are holding guns that look like ar right. Not a shotgun or other rifle which would be hard for the general public to see as military. I never said any rifle is evil. Even tho useing these guns does not make you military alot of guys get a worrier mentality when they get an AR in there hands. They think they are cool and they look cool carrying them and that is why so many are in use today. It is the cool factor not anything else { for most } not all. Stubby, so I bet you still think the Safe Act does not effect you. So no one needs a black bow then since Rambo had one. Also I believe the cops where the only ones that had AR's in First Blood. Oh but you would be very wrong. I never thought the safe act does not affect me. I affects everyone pro gun and anti gun. I was not refering to the movie when I brought up looking like Rambo. The color of any weapon has nothing to do with it. The shape and look of the weapon has nothing to do with it. It is all about the mentality a person gets while holding a certian weapon and how that is viewed by the antis. I believe that anyone should be able to own the gun of there choice no matter what it is and have never said other wise. How ever when the antis say you do not need xxx amount of rounds to kill a deer or need a rifle that looks a certain way for the same are they wrong? No there have been comments in this thread that people use ar guns for accuracy and they fact that if they need to get another shot off it can be done more quickly and accurately with an ar platform rifle. That is bs All that is need is one round from a single shot. It is called aiming. Haveing said that I will also say that we shold not be told what we can use. I have no problem with a guy useing a AR rifle or any other and loading 5 rounds. My 308 holds 5 rounds I put 2 in it and have never used the second. I know guys that load all 5 rounds in there guns and use all 5 those I tell them they need to learn to aim. If someone wants to use na Ar rifle to hunt deer they should be able to they should also know that to most they look like a little kid playing war. First Blood was not they only movie Rambo was in and he did use those in the other movies. He did not however use the black bow in first blood and bows are not considered military weapons by the general public. We worry about driveing home with a dead deer strapped to our car where everyone can see because of what it makes the antis think yet we do not worry about what they think when they see someone going into the woods with what they see as a military weapon and not a hunting weapon. Go figure. I believe everyone should own one if they want and use it for what they want. just do not complain when someone wonders why u need it. Just tell them you want it cause it looks cool. The truth goes a long ways.
-
I don't see many carrying ar either but they both look ridiculous. My point was if you saw someone using a sword when I pocket knife would be just as good you would think them a bit off there rocker wouldn't you? If you do not need to look like you are going into a military battle when hunting then why must folks look that way. Oh the cool factor thats right.
-
I couldn't care less if someone owns an AR. I would never own one I do not need to look like Rambo while I am hunting. Do not give the crap that they are used because they are so versatile, accurate or dependable. They are used because people feel the need to look like Rambo while they are out hunting. I believe that if someone wants to own an ar they should be able to, but to say they own it for anything then it is cool that is bs. ohh more horror, another one with the buck it killed and the damage it did( this is in 5.56) as you can see, the ar platform is entirely incapable of taking deer...........stunning that these guns operate on a 100 year old technology, yet some people are afraid of them. It isn't the gun they are scared of so much as it is the mentality of most of the nut jobs who have to have them. If you saw someone walking around with a sword on there side and asked them why, and they said because It is more versital to use then a pocket knife wouldn't you think they were a little off?

I could take shots of 80 to 100 yards in the woods and out to 500 in open fields. Have taken a wounded doe at 380. However being a hunter and not a sniper I prefer to get in close and actually hunt the animal so I keep my average to around 50 yards. My father always told me if you can't get in close and hunt the deer then I shouldn't call my self a hunter.

Wow I can't believe all the bad luck with cams. I have 5 cams all are moultrie. got first 3 in 2010 they are I35 the other are about 2 years old I believe they are a5. They are out year round the most they have ever been down and in the house is 6 weeks. I only ever had one problem with them, one of the i35 had a display screen stop working after about 4 years called moultrie and they had me send it in through fedex at there cost the put new display in it and sent it back. No cost to me at all. I get good pics and great battery life with these. Like I said they are out year round. I get 300 to 800 pics a week with them. I use tow sets of batteries a year in each cam and have never checked on the and found batteries dead. From the sounds of things I am glad I went moultrie. I agree with Doc spend $100 ona cam I expect it to last longer then a few months to a year. If that is all the performance I had gotten out of my first cams I would never have bought any more. Yea my cams were cheep but they do what I want with no problems. Wow a year and junk would be unexceptable.

Bananas work good to keep your potassium up. Low potassium causes leg cramps. They only help for future leg cramps, eating a banana when u have a cramp will not make it go away. My father suffers from real bad leg cramps all the time. He takes potassium pills and a couple other things the DR. has perscribed. None of which really help. He read some where that dill pickle juice helps with a lot of things cramps be one of them. Not being one who believes any of those kinds of things I was suprised when he told me he was trying it. He started eating dill pickles every nite at dinner and drinks a couple ounces of the juice every day. He has been doing this for about a month now. He says it has helped greatly. Does not eliminate the cramps all together but it has lessened the amount of them along with them not being so painfull. Might just be in his head but he will be the first one to say BS when ever he hears people say things like this work. That makes me think there could be some help in the dill pickle juice. Might be worth a shot. He said it took about 3 days for him to start seeing a difference. My uncly started trying this a couple weeks ago he says it seems to be helping him as well.

Posted Today, 09:06 AM Sorry Stubby. I disagree, as I know of many, and have met many more in the past. There used to be many more as a percentage of every day American society, but as things in this land devolved, they seem to have removed themselves from the mainstream in the interest of self preservation. Let's just say rational, intelligent, tolerant people don't move in the same circles as the majority of the people in this country anymore. I can agree with this. What I should have said is they are hard to find. They tend to keep out of site so as not to get drawn down by what has been happening in this country. Makes them the lucky ones

Politics of all kinds affects hunting and hunters. Christmas trees were brought up in this thread. A comment about Christmas was posted and insults followed. Anyone who posts insults, instead of addressing the issues in a post like a rational, intelligent, tolerant human being, should be taken to task. Where is all of the tolerance we are always told people want forced on all of the US here? VJ you do know there is no such thing don't you?
