  1. Know what is beyond your target and what your target is those are a must. How ever sense a round from a gun can travel a long distance it may be a little hard to know what is actually in your shooting path 100 yards or more away. If a person is wearing camo or brown they may not be seen even with binos. At that distance they would blend in pretty well. Orange is easy to see at at that distance even if the hunter is not out in the open and is not moving. I am not saying there are not hunters who just shoot reguardless of what is in there line of fire and I am not saying unloading your gun on a running deer is the thing to do I usually tell those guys they need their license taken away. I am saying that camo and brown blend in even when useing binos that makes it hard to knoe exactly what is in your line of fire at times. Deer are gotten every year by guys who are wearing orange so we do not NEED to wear the camo. By the way what is deers I have of deer 1 deer 2 deer 3 deer but not deers. Does the name Short Track imply you are from there. The small town near Fillmore I mean.
  2. Can you show a pic of the bars you are talking about? That may help use understand what exactly you are describing.
  3. I'm thinking 4.5. I think 5.5 is a bit much. At any rate he is too old for good steaks but he would go down for sausage. I think he should have went different color for the tat though that red makes him stick out.
  4. We don't know how many of the people who didn't vote were gun owners so we can't realy say not enough gun owners voted. Even if all gun owners voted against him he would have still won with the votes from NYC. I voted knowing full well he would win. The larger area of the state voted him out yet because of the many who live in smaller portions by that I mean the city he won. We will never get back or keep our rights in this country by voteing. History has shown that. History has shown us that from time to time those who who have been given the power to govern us need to be reminded that we gave them that power and we can take it away. They are attacking the 2nd amendment because that gives the means to take that power away. Voting does show them we are not taking there crap anymore force does. We need to fight back not vote back. They do what they want when they want how do we know for sure the numbers came out the way they say they did? Could be the numbers are what they want them to be so we just sit back and say shucks we lot again. Obama won or so they say and we say how is that look at the colors on the map Cuomo wins and we say the same thing. Aslong as we let them have the power they can always make things look like they won even though they are the smallest portion of the population and keep there power. If all we do is vote they can manipulate that but fighting back in something they can't control. Not that it would happen we as a people are content to be told what we can and can't do by a few who think they are above us
  5. This turned in to a thread about spotlighting and that is not poaching yet everyone talks like it is. I like spotlighting and see no problem with it. I have no problem with someone doing it on my property as long as they stay off the land and do not light my house it is fine with me. Poaching is another thing all together. A person can see in to your land during the day and no one is complaining about that. What are you doing at night you do not want anyone to see? If you turn a corner while driving your truck and your haed lights shine out in a field and you see a monster buck do you turn that truck back to the field and get a better look at that deer? I bet you and everyone that says they hate spot lighting has done this. Yet by your standerds that makes you a poacher. As for poachers it is tuff to keep them out. At some point you will not be around to stop them and they do there deed. The best you can do is let everyone know you will not stand for it and that if they get cought you will have them arrested. Do what you need to to make them think twice about doint it on your property. Make them wonder if you are around and they just do not see you. Yes when someone poaches deer it could be deer they saw while spotlighting. However it could be that they saw the deer during the day. Just because someone looks at your property doesn't mean they are looking to steal they might just be looking, just as you are when you turn your head lights on the monster buck you saw in someone elses field
  6. Actually it said shoot it or shine it not just shoot it. So they are not your deer and if people are not on your property then it is legal for them to look at them both during the day or at night with a light. Just because someone is looking at deer with a light doesn't mean they are poaching them. Maybe they are just trying to get an idea of what the overall population is and they just like watching deer. Best way to get an idea of overall population and not trespass is to drive the roads spotting them in fields. Lord forbid they see a big buck that I am hideing on my property. He is mine till he goes else where then he is someone elses. Just seeing a deer in a field especially a buck doesn't mean they will be there the next day. When that buck that was yours 2 days ago gets shot it doesn't mean the hunter poached it. It might have been there deer for the day.
  7. I'm with MACHINIST BEAR
  8. So does this mean that if one of your deer run into the road off your property and get hit by a car you should pay the bill not the insurance? Especially if you own both sides of the road that would mean your deer was just moveing from one part of your property to another. I like to spotlight for deer and have no problem when someone spotlights my property as long as it isn't my yard or house. It does not disturb the deer I have seen many deer pick up there and look when light hits them and then go back to feeding or be laying in field and never do more then turn there head. If they are disturbed and run from the light that means there has been more then spotlighting going on and they know it.
  9. single shot for new hunter is great hunter. Teaches them to make first shot count and helps to eliminate the spray and pray.

    Age?

bkln just wondering but what makes you say 3.5. I like to know what other guys to base age gusses on.
  11. Exactly ncountry. I believe in aiming and useing one shot not pull trigger till it's empty and hope you hit something. Everyone uses what gets the job done for them and as long as you can make it a good clean kill then you are not over or under gunned. dead is dead and that means you used just the right gun.
  12. Started seeing scrapes 2 weeks ago in my area of 9H. Today saw 3 different bucks chasing doe. One this morning and 2 this afernoon. Just a spike ,little fork horn, and a small 6 but they were taging the does around. Does didn't seem really interested today but soon

    Age?

I'm thinking 2.5 he doesn't that wide and not much of a belly. Maybe 3.5 bout doubt it. Could be wrong though
  14. I have tracked deer shot with a bow as has everyone else who has hunted with one. I have only ever tracked 1 deer with a gun that was the first deer I ever shot with one. Sense then I shot them in the head and the drop where they stand no tracking. Why would I want to track one? Anything can happen to cause you to not recover your prize. I know everyone will jump on the head shooting but I do not care about the head gear and inside 200 yards it is a gimme outside 200 front shoulders however My longest opertunity on a deer has been about 130 most are withen 80 yards. I am not knocking anyone here I am just pointing out that people are jumping on others who use small caliber guns because they say you need a cannon to kill deer because you need knock down power. Yet those same people use bows. What is the knock down power of a stick?
  15. Unless you are just starting out the only thing that makes hunting expensive is license fees. Otherwise you should have a gun and everything else you need and when spread out over a few years that pays for itself. Unless you are one who needs all the latest and greatest gadgets every year, all you need is gun amo clothes , knife and tow rope, maybe some food if you are going for a whole day. Most of the stuff guys take is really not needed. I can get alot more venison for $100 then I can beef.
  16. 3.5 at oldest. I think the angle of pictures is why some think older. Side view is best.
  17. I have everything I need. I enjoy hunting and eating what it provides. As I said paying that and then not filling your tags is the same as going to a store and leaveing $100 with the cashier and walking out with nothing. If the state raised your taxes and gave you nothing or just sent you a bill for $100 dollars would you just say no big deal and have no problem with paying it. We do not go to concerts nor do we spend $100 on a dinner. We both work and bring homw more then enough money to do those and many other things. We do not spend money on such nonsense. If we want to listen to music we turn on the radio and if we are hungery we get deer meat out of the freezer and cook it. The money is not the actual issue the fact that when I spend money for something I expect to get it not let the mponey go to waste. People like you complain when the government spends your tax money on stupid stuff yet you have no prob giveing them money for nothing. Yea that is it. It is always because people are keeping or killing the small ones. It could never be that to many are keeping and killing only the biggest ones. As I said before the decoration craze there were plenty of deer every where bucks and does big bucks. I Have said before that I shoot what walks in front of me. I have only gotten 1 decoration buck in the last 8 years. Before that I got 10 that tells me more of them were more of them walking around then sense I saw more. Now They are not seen as much meaning they are fewer that is why guys saying we need ar. This is evident by the complaints every year that there are not enough big bucks. Ok I am done defending my self this is getting way off topic. You waste your money shoot nothing and eat nothing. I will shoot them all and let god sort them out and I will eat like a king. Good day my fine sir
  18. accman you do not need to spend that $100 just to be out there enjoying the woods and animals. Just go out it is free to be there what you are paying for is a chance to get some good naturally grown meat. I would rather eat venison then beef every day. I like to have 4 in the freezer and that isn't going to happen if I pass on everything. Like I said If all you want is to enjoy the outdoors then just go there is no charge for that. I enjoy the outdoors year round but when I pay to hunt I enjoy the meat. Culvercreek those fishing regs you mention help nothing if they did then fish would not have to be restocked every year. If keeping only certain size fish worked then stocking would not be needed right? As for more big bucks now if that were the case then why do somany hunters cry we need ar because there are no big bucks around. When there news of a big buck seen some place or that someone got a big buck everyone is talking about it and excited. When I started hunting it was no big deal to see or get a nice buck as it was more thgen likely shot for the meat. Hunting means different things to different people we should be able to kill what we want and not hear anything about it. Yet when someones shoots a small buck for the meat they have to hear all the crap. Why u shoot such a small one, If you were a better hunter you could get a mature buck, shooting small bucks hurts the heard, you are a lazy hunter if you can not put in the work and time to get a big buck. Crap like that is said all the time. I say let everyone shoot what they want they paid for the license and I paid for mine.
  19. dbHunter I hunt for meat and if it is 1.5 years or older and walks in front of me it takes a dirt nap. I do not pass a 1.5 hopeing for a 4.5 but if a 4.5 walks in front of me first I shoot it. Younger ones do eat better then older ones. Buck or doe if it has a lot of years on it then it will be tough and not be as tasty. Same with beef the older the animal the tougher the meat. Maybe 1.5 year old bucks make up the majority of bucks because all the older ones have been shot for there antlers leaving only younger ones. Before the hunting shows caused everyone to want decorations for there walls there was no problem seeing big bucks most hunted for meat and killed what they saw. Now a lot of guys hunt for the decoration and big bucks are getting harder to find. What other species of animal hase size or age limits on it and has that work for it. Some guys say they will eat there tags before they kill a young deer that is fine for them. I on the other hand will not throw away my money like that. I do not go to the store give them $100 and walk out with out anything. Same with hunting I am not giveing the state $100 to get deer meet and leave it in the woods.
  20. Yet people who say they need canon to kill deer in NY throw sticks at them. Makes no sense. You say you do not want to track a giant for hundreds of yards guess what that is what happens when shooting with a bow. How many stories have there been on here from guys who shoy deer with bow and had to track for ever? Some were not till next day some were not found at all. That is waste due to under kill. I kill just fine with my .308 and .243. Buddy of mine uses a .300 wsm and a 7mm yet his deer are no deader then mine. I do not care what size any one uses. I just do not understand why there has to be an arguement about it. Some people like to aim make a good shot and use a smaller round some just like to shoot and put huge holes in the animal no matter where the round hits. big deal to each there own. I just ask if an arrow if fine then why isn't a small caliber gun?
  21. Wow grow are you sure it wasnt just what the guy who came out wanted not what was needed? I have never heard of needing all of that. Buddy of mine has used them a couple of times in last few years. I have been there each time when the came out all they asked was do you have permission to be on property and where is last blood and where was deer shot. Took them to the spots and the track was on we were with them the whole time and found both deer. The dog was great the dog went one way and my buddy said no the deer did not go that way. Guess what? the dog was right. The next time he called them he just let the dog lead us and didn't question it.
  22. Welcome, No regs on how long you can keep it. Keep till it is freezer burnt. I still have 2 packages from last year I plan to eat very soon. Question, How would they inforce such a regulation?Did they go house to house checking freezers to see what you had in them after July. I thought NY had some dumb regs Not being able to keep your meat past a certain date is way out there. Even Ny doesn't try to run that much of our lives. What was there reason for this ?
  23. I hunt for the meat. I like a 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 year old buck or doe meat is not as tough and has better taste then older. However that doesnt mean I will pass up a older deer to get a younger one. I also will not pass up a small buck hopeing for a big on either. Button buck or small doe I will let walk not worth the work for the little meat they provide. I do not have a problem with hunters who shoot them or only hunt for trophy it is there money and time they can enjoy it the way they want
  24. You're screwed now. If you start acting funny say good bye to your loved ones.HA HA Seriously what is there to feel dumb about? The post? You will be fine it is only brain matter no big deal. Many a hunter have gotten it and other things on them from deer they have killed and they are fine. Calm down take a breath a shower and enjoy the meat, congrats on the kill.
  25. Wow almost $5 for milk? I thought it was getting bad around here. I just got a gallon of milk tonite and it was $3.29 at tops. At save a lot It is $2.75. Prices are going up everyday though and the size of products is getting smaller. Meat is the worst I believe. Even chicken and hamburg and they use to be the cheap meat to use for dinner.Hunting season sure helps with the grocery bill no matter your income. The garden is a big help as well. Lots of freezing and canning around the house this time of year.
