  1. Holding horns this late is an indication of a mild winter, and more important...good feed. if they were stressed, the first thing gone would be the antlers.
  2. if its her hips, suppliment her food with a glucosamine product. Lyme disease wouldnt just affect her hips. Hope shes doing better
  3. Lyme disease cannot be contacted by eating meat. Only by the bacteria from the tick which has lived a portion of its life on a wild mouse and then a deer. without this cycle, no lyme disease.
  4. Ford F 150. with the 5.0 Ive had 6 straight fords and never had an issue. The mechanics are great, only issues ever are with the bells and whistles of a loaded up truck
  5. Its okay in stew and meat pies and sausage, but for a steak......no thanks Ill take deer.
  6. Id be setting up between those corn fields if that hedgerow is wide enough and has some good trees. It looks similar to my piece and that corn is the key especially late season. If there are beans around, thats where they will be in early season. Stick to the field edges and use those pinch points.
  7. I have the Ruger 77/22 in 22 hornet. Very accurate gun. Dad has even taken many deer with it with head and neck shots. I use it for Coyotes and have dropped several with it.
  8. I scouted my lease this weekend in zone 7M. Saw some birds, but not like the past. I didnt even see any in the fields while driving around. Whats the word out there....are you seeing less Birds? Could the winter have affected them? Just wondering if others are finding the same or not.
  9. Im with Pygmy. I think these bones are leftovers from the meals brought back. ??
  10. Ive used my withy alot success. BUT....I attached the tail from a jake I shot to it to make a new decoy out of it. But I can tell you this....Mine works great now with that tail on it.
  11. I just made the switch to a single pin yesterday. Seems I always use the 20 yard pin 9 out of 10 times, so Its time to use just One for me. I bought the DDA single pin.
  12. Virgil, Not yet. Ive inquired about a few properties with them, but havent actually hired them for help. I let them know what Im looking for and ask them to contact me. Once the snow melts to where I can go to my leased land, I will stop and inspect some of these places. Im not ready to purchase just yet, till I sell a house here in NH first. Im still going to live here till I retire(8Yrs), but want to get something started out there. Even if its just planting fruit trees or other vegitation for the future. Its an exciting time, knowing I will have a new place to play with. Hopefully I find something with a small camp already on it. I prefer not to have to build right away. M
  13. Thanks Virgil for the reply. I have my eye on a 98 acre piece in Otsego county now. Glad to hear the deer population is solid. I may find a smaller piece if I can. Like you, its good to see what surrounds the land you want. That can add to your acreage without having to pay for it. The piece I saw is in Exeter area. Ill look at in when the snow melts.
  14. Its guys like you that I love meeting up with on my posted land. I promise you would never return a second time.
  15. Thanks for the input fellas. However....everyone is telling me what they would do, what I should do, and Nobody is answering my original question.....WHERE would you buy if it were you. This wont be the first property I bought in my life. I know what to worry about as far as taxes, building ect. And I will be a cash buyer. What I was really getting at is....where? But then again, Im sure there are many variables. Ive picked up alot from the posts. One thing is that if its the right piece, in the right spot, I may be able to be happy with much less acreage. I think 50-100 is a good range. Nothing bad about buying land, last I checked, they arent making any more of it. Im paying more attention to what Surrounds the land I like. Thats thanks to your ideas men. Thanks.
  16. Thanks Moog, thats some good stuff. I agree that it doesnt need to be BIG to be good. I just figured 75-100 acres gives me some variability of the land and the hunting spots. Like you, I want a place that I KNOW I can hunt when I want, and how I want. Im not worried about trespassers yet, Ill deal with them if need be. Ive had great success with keeping people out of my lease property. Nothing works better than threatening some asshole with a good beating. And of course being willing to deliver it. But,,,,Im a hunter, not a fighter.
  17. Dont worry Steve, Im not an idiot. I just want to own the land I hunt and do whatever I want on it as far as managment of wildlife. yes this is a piece of land I will eventually spend alot more time at as the years go by. Im looking for something in the 1K/acre range with a small camp if possible on it already. I have a line on a property of 98 acres for 119K for example. No Im not an idiot...just in search of the american dream...as it applies to a fanatic Deer hunter.
  18. I have been leasing land to hunt deer and turkey in NY for awhile now. I wanted to ask you guys who live there year round.....Where would you but a 100 acre or so parcel to call your own hunting paradise? Ive been hunting in Oneida county and like the deer densities Ive seen. What County would you look to buy land in for hunting to call your own?? I seem to favor Oneida, Madison or Otsego because I want to stay within 5 hours drive time from New Hampshire where I live. This will be a property I can hunt till I retire, and then spend alot more time here later in life. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
