  1. It's just different with each hunter. I do t classify a buck by his points nor his spindly rack. We can't control that without high fences, and like others mentioned alot has to do with the doe also. But I judge more based on age, especially if there is history with this buck. I won't pull the trigger on anything less than a 3.5 yr old, unless wounded. (Which to of the 2.5 yr old bucks taken of our neighboring piece both had crossbow bolts broke off in them). Unless they are injured pretty bad. Where it impairs their ability to be mobile significantly. But I can't agree on shooting the younger of the 2 deer in that scenario. From my point of view they both get the pass, even if one will be a target buck the following year.. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  2. Since we are on topic here and it crossed my mind while in stand yesterday. How would you all feel about this.. I feel better but kind of saddened some... again I don't push people and bash on anyone for their harvests. We all live different lives.. So the majority of all my good 2.5 yr olds were taken this bow and gun season, granted only 1 of my top hit listers fell to the bullet while all of my 3.5s and other hit list bucks that I was aware of are still alive. These 2.5yr olds are the up and comers that the majority of us on the hill are looking to harvest at a minimum. We practice a (you shoot a buck, you shoulder mount it) type rule for us that manage across the properties. Leaving it to be most 3.5 yr old bucks and older to qualify for that buck tag/man cave wall. Now these hunters that took these 2.5 yr olds are the same hunters that shoot the first 1.5yr old buck that passes by them... First off I'm happy they took a buck bigger than their usual and probably the biggest or one of the biggest bucks they have ever taken. After talking with them, and showing them trail cam pics and informing them on some history and where the buck tended to spend a lot of his time via trail cam, they seem to want to start doing the management side of things. Hoping that they will pick up on this and let them grow some like the rest of us. So for that I am happy we may have gained another property to the list. Which would only help for the futures hunts obv.. Secondly, these harvests just eliminated a bunch of bucks that would or would be very close to shoulder mount bucks for next year. Granted we still have the alive shooter bucks and the few new ones next year if they make this next 10days/winter. I guess I'm more happy than sad but the thought always crosses my mind.. I literally take this managing thing to heart way to much lol. Thoughts anyome, if that made sense? Lol Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  3. Thanks everyone, I really appreciate everything. I do not have pics at the moment, and I have yet to see the boat finished. Next time I'm there I'll get a picture or find someone that can take one for me. It's covered up right now. I'm not aware of the exact condition. I'm not looking to make money off it but I don't want it to go super cheap either. Really looking to get out from under it. Since he has 5 boats and they take up too much room. 4. Anyone know much about the value of this boat, sorry I do not have pictures. It is a 21', 115hp evinrude, along side it sets a 9.9 evinrude. Boat is set up with down riggers as well as out riggers i believe. Not exactly sure on year, its a 1980 give or take a year or 2, Im looking for a price to possibly ask and sell this for, or possibly someone here that may be interested in it? Long story short, my dad bought this boat, dirt cheap about 4 years ago and slowly rebuilt and restored it with his buddy, back to working shape. This pass March he finally got it water worthy and registered it. Two days later they were both killed in a car accident when a man ran a stop sign. They built this boat for the intentions of trout fishing.. Since then, its been stored at one of his friends, under a cover and tarped ever since. I ask you all here b/c I enjoy talking with everyone, Would anyone here have a possible Value for this boat or maybe even an offer to take this off our hands? We are trying to sell it and settle his estate. Please, & Thanks in advance! Bryan
  5. there is 1 or 2 species of clover that can withstand some flooding if it were to happen. one being Aslike Clover, so i read. Cant hurt anything to try. But for a first time plot i always planted a blend to see what they like the most. Especially in case they do not like something in particular, and you planted it all that way.
  6. Lol, that is what I am hoping for! Maybe this weekend, ill take it out.
  7. This is exactly what we did for many of years. Starting in 2007 we tried to get as many neighbors as possible on board with if your shooting a buck, you are doing a shoulder mount with him, no ifs and or but about it. It worked well for the amount of participation we got out of this. (about 2/3) cooperation within about 2,000 acres. A few properties had guys became very upset that they hadnt taken any good bucks yet and went straight back to their old ways, after a few years. Its their property their choice, i dont mind. but we still do pretty well. Several of these properties wont shoot does, fore they bring in the big bucks we are chasing. But if this state became an earn a tag state, with check stations, and or a 1 buck only state for atleast a few years, it would make this state more productive for quality bucks. Im not about the antler score size but about the age, ill shoot a 100" 5.5. yr old every year and be happy.
  8. Exactly, I meant to mention flooding and forgot... typical lol Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  9. Oh I know lol. But I'm leaving this cannon with open iron sights and won't shoot beyond 100yrds. But can't wait to harvest with it. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  10. Not sure if a rake will be heavy enough without killing yourself. but anyway to scratch up the surface and try to expose the weed roots to air. there are a few blends out there id try if it was my spot. A blend with a few different clovers white and red and some type or cereal rye or wheat of some sort.. but im not a pro at food plotting. just have a few years of it under my belt lol
  11. for years ive wanted a lever action 45-70. Finally won one this fall lol. A Henry Big Game Custom 24k gold plated edition lol. idk how i pulled that off. but i finally decided i would shoot it since i wasnt letting it go. And to me theres no sense having a gun you wont shoot. ill take good care of it obv. Shot it at 50 yards free hand with the 405 gr. core lokt. And it shoots tight there. i have yet to shoot it any farther but the ballistics even for the 300gr ammo are not great lol, its anything but a flat shooting gun. lol The gun is so comfortable to hold, and doesn't kick anymore than my 22-250
  12. I have often wondered the same thing. No we arent eating what is being sprayed "initially", but the deer we harvest that we eat are eating these sprayed plants. And if the plant produces and the farmer harvest the crop, we still one way or another probably consume these plants. And cancer seems to be much more common these days, or im just paying more attention these days lol. I used RR Soybeans for a few years, and broadcast ed the seed as well. Applied round up when plants were over 12" tall.. worked great. Corn can be broadcast but for best results, after seeding, you want to disk the seed under an inch or so of soil. so wind and such can not blow the plant over when it begins growing and becoming top heavy.
  13. I wish I shot a doe or 2 early in bow. But I couldn't let her hang with the temperatures and couldn't process her quick due to being busy. I knew wide say this during gun season lol. My 2 yr old keeps asking me when I return in from hunting if I got any deer, cause she wants to eat deer. Lol and she actually like venison Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  14. I have all my tags to fill yet. I took this weekend off to give the place a break "mainly from the drive pressure of the neighbors" and to get things done. Ill go out this coming weekend and ML weekend for sure. I will check the trail cams this week for the weekend sets and go from there. I see some good bucks still being taken all around.
  15. Disk the soil up a few separate times before the planting date. It wont rid all your weeds but it will help some if you do not want to use any weed killer spray applications. Im sure there is home remedies you can use for weed killer. 1 gallon vinegar to 1oz/gallon dish soap worked well ive heard. One of my design engineers only uses home remedies i can ask her. But ive heard alot about 1gallon of vinegar with 1oz dish soap.. killed most grasses and weeds but not all.
  16. One of the daughters took a nice 120" 8 pt Friday morning. They get the same bears nearly every couple of days. and they are not small by any means lol
  17. I wouldnt thin anything unless you have a canopy shading out the apples. Just trim them and fertikize, i would much rather have too thick of woods than too thin of woods (which I have and am trying to improve) deer just are not there during daylight. Once the sun goes down they are on my property all night, but not during day Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  18. Corn is always great but imo it's a pain to clean for the next plot. Between stealing nutrients and all the stalks left behind.. plus if you leave it stand it's an instant sanctuary lol. And you cant shoot into it, unledd brush hogged down. Plus everything in the woods like corn, especially bear and coons. But is an awesome draw yet Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  19. I left out the yellowing stage. My apologies, in my experiences when the soybean goes yellow then begins turns to grain is the only time they could care less for soybeans. But imo this only lasts a week or 2. But not all beans will turn at the exact same time if you plant a mix blend. Then they are right back in them. Justyet experiences with soybeans. 20. Corn is a pain, IMO .. everything in the woods likes corn. unless you cage it off so it can grow. Mine always gets destroyed unless you plant enough of it. i planted a 10' wide probably 200 yards long, field corn screen this summer TWICE and i got 95% failure lol. The drought probably didnt help but you can see where anythign that emerged was ripped out of the ground. There are screen seed products from many companies you can plant.. or shrubs/trees. Im going the shrub tree route this spring
  21. I have several big elder berry bushes on my property and they never get touched. I transplanted them in my grandmothers back yard, they died fairly fast but we cut them back to about 4 ft tall and they are alive and thriving now. she makes pies and jams with them. The lady that lived and owned the cabin and land we have now must have been a flower and fruit fanatic. lol There are fruit trees, flowers, blue, red, black elder, all berries all over around the house. Its beautiful setup.
  22. I will be doing the "cages" as well around mine that are planted and growing as well as new ones. Once they start to emerge from the grow tubes to keep anything from nipping all new growth. I learned this from a pear tree i planted this year, somehow the grow tube and stake were got pulled up or blown away, not covering one of the Pear tree i planted this year. The tree was exposed and the top 3 or 4 inches were eaten off. Im hoping the tree will grow back come spring. but the grow tube is back on it now.
  23. Soybeans are your best bet, they will eat them from the day the emerge from the soil, all through the winter providing their is bean pods on them. But typically you need at least a few acres to last thru the winter, from browse pressure that starts in June. Seeings how soybeans are planted in May-June, if you can afford it, I would plant the acreage you have available for this plot all in soybeans first, and find out if they hold up or not, ( or build a hot fence around it) (last year i hung Irish spring soap around mine to keep the deer out until September then took the "barrier" down. Worked well, even though everyone laughed lol). if they grow but get hammered and become thin, over seed w/ brassicas /clovers/turnips. in late July early August. Sometimes it may take deer 1 or 2 seasons to get used to brassicas if its there first time being introduced to them.
  24. I have the same issue with one of my properties. The lady that boarders us, is one of them theres "anti-hunters" and lets just say its thick. So we wait on the edges with the right winds.
