  1. 185 ranged yards. (3) pellets 250gr shock wave. T/C Omega w/ Nikon 3-9x40 I use the thicker part of the bottom cross-hair where it meets at a point and the cross-hair gets thinner towards center, and sight that "point" in also with all of my non BDC scopes for farther shots. That "point" is set for 225 yards on my Omega.
  2. I would do this but I want to fall the trees in certain directions the best I can. Also I don't want them falling if I was in the stand near by. Lol. I was also told to cut off poplars low to the ground, less than a foot as they will grow shoots if left too high. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  3. I just planted a half dozen crab apples a few weeks ago. I would have bought and planted more if I had the time to do the work lol. Come March or April I'll put some more in the dirt. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  4. I'm doing the same with my poplars thus winter/spring. They are shading out a lot of young maple and oaks and few pines that have are growing well. They serve zero purpose besides maybe cover or some woody browse maybe once they are down. But I'm doing the same thing you are. Planting a few pics especially, some more white oaks. And possibly a patch of soft mass trees. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  5. My cameras and deer sightings (bucks and doe) were very high all season, esp. the week before gun season, Since gun season started the action on the cams had died down quite a bit and especially the deer sightings, besides some small bucks and buttons. Just trying to fill a doe tag and they are holding tight to the sanctuaries it seems. One of the land owners, i mainly hunt on, let his friends come in from PA for the opening week through Wednesday. And they basically ruined all the movement. They drove the woods off several times(tracks in the snow) shot a few deer and seemed to have wounded some too, following blood trails into neighboring property and no boot tracks that follow any of the blood. along with marks in the snow that look like broken legs or shoulders dragging... They hunt right next to their quads, and drive them everywhere. Another neighbor also told me it sounded like a war over there Wednesday night, their last night here. This all really really sucks, especially when trying to manage property. And now he is having his Pines logged off in the next week or two. Trying to figure out the best way to approach him Basically i'm leaving the woods alone until the last weekend of Reg, Season or ML season. I do this nearly every year just to keep the pressure off.. Ive moved cams for focus on Late season and will check them as Gun ends.
  6. Not as good of a year as last year. If I remember right I think the daughters took a doe and 1 smaller buck. And a bear. There camp is absolutely loaded with bears. Haven't spoke with them in a few weeks tho. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  7. I planted White Oak this spring from Nativ Nurseries, along with the growing tubes. They survived the drought and were about 3ft tall when planted. I lined half of one of my plots with these and pear trees, i think i will be plant more of the plot and make it more of an orchard with Whit eOak and Soft mass in another half, rather than leave it a wide open food plot.
  8. I drive through there quite often, and will say there seem to be a lot of deer over there. Though, I have never hunted it, the deer numbers seem pretty good just from observing while driving. Have seen some good bucks on my travels through as well.
  9. Last night was real windy, and with snow on the ground it made great still hunting conditions. And perfect conditions to sit over the cut corn. Everything but what i wanted to harvest showed up in the corn lol. I love gun hunting weather like this. Though the winds could calm down some for sure. As grow said trees and branches were falling everywhere. On my way back to the car i followed my tracks which had a buck walking in them as well, right back to my vehicle lol ended up being the little 4pt my wife calls "Buddy"
  10. Ive never been a huge fan of the full sneak. not in a shoulder mount anyways. It would probably look cool to get an awesome looking full sneak mount (lip curl) done trailing behind a doe making it look like hes pursuing her. but i could never afford that lol I always try to mount them, just as i see them before the harvest, as im sure alot of people do. but i dont think i can do a full sneak. I do not have any upright left or right turns yet. all 4 are semi sneak. I think the next will be upright one way or the other.. They always look good.
  11. One of the bucks i just mentioned probably would have ended up like that buck, had i not taken him, a tresspasser unloaded his gun and sent slugs through (3) of the deer's legs right above the hooves, the deer ran through the woods stopped at 30 yards and i took him for his inability to walk. Lucky for me, he went on my wall, meat was good. and i rid the trespasser AND his buddies that all were illegally on my property and thought they had permission...
  12. They are tougher than we give them credit for. But any wound that can create an infection, or inhibits their ability to move can lead to death as we all know. The only difference is the length of illness. Any deer that seems real weak on the hoof, or not functioning properly, as long as i have a tag for i will harvest. No matter if its in or outside my "management standards" .. Have done this twice now. Both deer would have been taken that winter, either by predators or weather.
  13. Sorry for the OP's hard earned loss, i know how you feel completely.. and it sucks!! I have never seen a broad head do this or even hear of this happening. But just the thought of using a mechanical that deploys like they do makes me cringe. sorry just my opinion.. Any broad head that hits bone has a great tendency to break, chip or do whatever you dont want it to do. Im guessing the OP hit the knuckle of the shoulder hence there was no penetration on a broadside deer. I could be wrong but shots usually always look better than they actually are. Again i could be wrong. Just saying from experience. Ive shot rage originals, rage hypos as well as fixed heads. Have never had any of them fail me, im sure some out there will and do, but if a broad head goes through a deer and cuts the organs and arteries as it should, i dont know why people complain. Sorry for stating this, but to me thats asking for alot, especially if the broad head harvested the animal you shot. I have only had a couple blades bend in all my years hunting fixed/mechanical ... 1 broad head for 1 deer id be happy.. 1 broad head for multiple deer is even better. lol im going on #5 deer out of the same rage hypodermic broad head, and the very first hit with it was a spine shot(buried deep) its still razor sharp and has a very sharp tip. I visually inspect and give it some sort of pressure test and re install..
  14. We just filled a couple apprenticeships for tool and die makers, here in Palmyra. Tool and die is where its at. I love it. We run CNC, manuals, etc.. all of it. Whatever the company needs we build. Idk of anyone hiring, off the top of my head but we work with many outside vendors, i could ask around. We are not hiring right now but will be in a year or two when couple guys retire or if something happens before hand to fill their positions.., We would much rather have someone with great common sense and some mechanical aptitude, we can train ourselves... rather than gods greatest gift.. lol More fun too
  15. If i can I have someone at camp or a neighbor drive out on a quad or a vehicle. Always works. But when they are not around lol Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  16. first off, i hope you find him, best of luck to you. Secondly, few years back I hit a big mature buck, and a doe that both did the same thing as mentioned here, high mule kicked, wheel barreled on their chest left spots of great blood., only for a shorter distance, to then vanish. Never found either. i believe they were both muscle hit. Not to rain on a parade, i do hope you get him, just trying to help. A high hit deer probably wont bleed much at all either which sucks, besides out of the mouth/nose..
  17. Congrats Jim Droz, nice buck! Birdsall Inn, do you hunt right near there? A friend of mine just purchased 110 acres surrounded by thousands of state land acres on all 3 sides, only 2 minutes away. Lots of whitetail/bear land over there..
  18. Unreal, congrats to you both! what slobs, that is awesome!! when its on its on !!
  19. Ive been meaning to ask this question before, im glad it came up. I was told to try blowing at them, so I did, the 1st time it worked perfect the deer cleared. 2nd time, not so much. I blew at the at very last light.. they stood and tried pinning me down( im guessing trying to figure out why a "deer" was blowing" and they never left, but started blowing back at me lol i ended up waiting forever to climb down and still bumped them. I now do not hunt any stand that i think i may bump deer on the way out in evening sits, or going in on morning sits. I think ill try the coyote barks, seeing how there are a ton of yotes at my place.
  20. I know exactly what you mean with your drawing.. same idea I did with the tree step(nearly fully contained). That would work. I just left my tree step upside down and let the foot part of the step hold the wood against the tree. And as long as I used the step at the right angle it would act as a glide/slide, or tip it more and it would pinch it Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  21. I definitely try to avoid the 3 or 4 trunk trees as much as possible they raise hell with wooden permanent stands. Go with a bigger diameter tree and use the branches that come off it. Or just use 2 of the trunks instead of the 3. White pine especially. Either keep it low so there isn't as much movement or yea, hang a hang on or ladder in there.. agreed as well that they will ruin your clothes with that sap. My neighbor makes all his stands out of wood. They make wooden ladder stands and wooden hang ons. Very well built but they gotta be a pain to put in a tree i would imagine. I love these wooden stands just for the fact that they typically always have more than enough room, and much cheaper in price lol compared to a store bought stand. esp, when you own 20sum stands
  22. Ive been wanting to get back into making a couple permanent wooden stands again, especially in trees that my grandfathers and family hunted for years. instead of putting up a hang on or ladder like i do now, idk why but its a nice feeling sitting in a stand I've built from scratch.. lol weird i know If i tried to make a replica of some of the permanent stands I made through my younger years, i would probably have fallen and hurt myself quite badly. Im no wheres near as mobile as i was 8 years ago, nor as uneducated or maybe i should say daring lol. The last one i made was between 25-30' in the air and i made it all by myself with no harness or anything, idk how i did and how im alive lol. But the last few i made i used pressure treated 2x6 or 2x8 for the frame, tied in with a heavy lag bolt and washer. followed by a tree step directly underneath the frame where the lag is. In case the bolt broke in a heavy wind storm, the tree step wont break, but will continue to support the stand, and then can swivel or pivot some and still be in tact, or in tact more than it would be without the tree step. As long as you leave a little extra sticking out. And deck wood for the platform, never ever use plywood... you'll dance right over the edge. All areas i would stand or hold onto got ice and water shield applied
  23. Looks to me like theres a dang good chance its the same buck. Obv. 1 & 3 are the same, but #2 looks the same too bucks can grow an extra point or two or not grow a point or 2 going into the following growing season. I say its the same buck. If not, its a buck that was a twin lol
  24. I used this service with a man out of Hornell, NY last year for my buck. I knew the buck was dead, but he was in a field of golden rod and brush that was all of 6ft tall or more. And I did not want to ruin the land from a landowners sake, or a tracking sake. It was one of his easier tracks but he still drove plenty of miles and had 2 unsuccessful tracks before me. All I had was 100$ in my pocket and I gave it all to him. It probably cost him more than that especially of the others didn't tip much or at all. I would have gave more if I had it, just for the support and service I received. As well as watching the old boy (dog) do his magic and get super excited. It was a blast and I follow every deer search adventure I can. Thanks as always. Get well soon Luna! Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  25. Again just looking for opinions, and yes some of my guns I care how they look, why idk.. but others I could care less.. these 2 rifles I won mean more to me than any gun I own so I guess I'm just looking for ideas and opinions. My father was supposed to be with me at this banquet and he couldn't since his life was taken suddenly at an intersection. And never ever winning anything in my life before, these 2 winnings mean the world to me... The other gun was a Henry big boy 45-70 gold, custom engraved. The gun I've always wanted since being a youngster. And no I won't be putting a scope on this one lol Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
