  1. Have you ever seen the face of that same guy after he shot a 150 class buck?? Same face.. only the smile goes from ear to ear!! It's all about antler size.. some like smaller, most like bigger.. but still about antlers for most hunters... otherwise we wouldn't be talking about them.
  2. The DEC can not and does not make laws concerning conservation based on the needs or wants of a few hunters. That would be like saying that there is a hunter out there that poaches deer to feed his family... so we ought to do away with all the poaching laws to accomadate that hunter... it just can't work that way. I can tell you for sure that if my family was in that desperate a need for food.. no antler restriction or other law would keep me from feeding my family. Not to mention, Obamahas a plan for people that need food... it's called food stamps... they're easy to get.. in fact, more americans use them than ever before..lol
  3. I found that most of the TV people are very knowledgable about certain aspects of hunting.. especially shooting skills... both gun and archery... they are well versed on all aspects and are usually exceptional shots. They also need to fit into the "circle" so to speak... it's a hard circle to break into... most of these TV celebs don't take the kind of hunting you and I do seriously... they think it's beneath them to trudge through the mud and snow in search of a good buck... I've hunted with many of the older celebs and they refused to hunt and film without someone to guide them, preset their stands, and make sure they have exclusive access to areas with bigger bucks... Chuck Adams killed his world record archery elk after other hunters were denied access to the same elk weeks prior by the outfitter.. it was fair chase... but he and he alone was set up for the chance to kill that elk... it's very possible that had the other hunters not been denied access to that area reserved for Chuck.. he never would have killed it... that's just some of the things that happen i guess when you're famous... One of the things that turned me away from staying in the "circle" was the egos of many in the industry. Just wasn't my cup of tea... I like regular guys.
  4. My problem with these shows is that there is more attention paid to the hunter than the animal... the fellas and gals on these shows may be well known for having a television show, but that doesn't necessarily equate to being some kind of hunting "guru"... many hunters look at these "TV hosts" as being the end all be all when it comes to hunting.. the truth is most are just regular joe's like you and I that have found a way to make it in the outdoor television world... I would challenge most of them to try an get the same hunting footage hunting in the ADK's or on NY public land. Having done the TV thing myself.. I can tell you that it's all about pleasing the sponsors... without them you have no show or the fleeting fame...
  5. Adam Hayes holding his Warren County 10-point rack. Adam's buck is the Largest Gun Typical entered into the NYSBBC Record book for 2011 with a B&C score of 161 0/8 and weighing in at 200lbs. The buck was measured by B&C scorer Dick Joohndrow. (Photo by Dick Joohndrow)
  6. The best is when they're all sitting in a heated hut 20 feet off the ground with just a slit to look through and fit a gun barrel through... they end up shooting a buck a few hundred yards away... and when they show them in the hut they have head to toe camo complete with head net..lol .. no no.. wait! How about just after they shoot and the buck goes down 300 yards away near the feeder.. they are breathing so hard that you'd think they just ran a marathon... they are so excitecd that you think they might pee their pants... then they proceed to tell you "That was a tough hunt " and how hard they worked for that buck...
  7. I killed a big 8-point once that I later determined must have been hit by a car... his leg was broken just above the hoof at the knuckle... and both g-2's were snapped off at the beam at exactly the same spot. Probably where his antlers hit on the road. I tracked for hours until finally getting to a hemlock stand where he left all the signs that he was about to lay down.. I stared into the hemlocks for about 5 minutes before he finally jumped up about 30 yards away I shot him on a dead run going away from me. His leg was completely blackened and hanging on by just the skin so he'd been like that for some time... the whole time I was tracking him I could tell something was up with him , but couldn't place my finger on just what it was... the snow was too deep to tell that he was just walking on the stub of his leg... my point I guess is that he did everything that a healthy buck would do... feeding and everything along his path... he ran as well as any buck I've ever seen spooked out of his bed... the area that I tracked him in had signs of a group of hunters having hunted the area most of the day... from the different foot prints I could tell there were at least 6-7 guys and they had been making drives in the area... the group actually walked out of the woods together along a trail that passed within 25 feet of where the buck had been laying... I think he just layed there and let them walk by... I wouldn't have shot him had I not seen his rack when he jumped up... so some bucks are hard to tell in certain situations whether they're hurt or not... and I can't be sure that he wouldn't have survived just fine had I not killed him.
  8. and the debate continues... I thought maybe the foyote or cox might end it..lol
  9. I play mandolin, fiddle and a little guitar.
  10. That's what I had.. now I can carry it anywhere except NYC, and any federal building... Madison County.
  11. I think that if there were any significant numbers of coyotes being taken that caused the population of coyotes to become endangered.. you might see bag limits and greater restriction on them... mother nature usually adapts to take care of everything as long as we don't overdo it and really screw things up.
  12. This isn't about a competition between my site and this forum.. John and I have a good relationship and share with each other quite nicely... I send people here all the time... it's just another avenue to spread the info to NY hunters
  13. Yeah.. I'm thinking about getting a .380 ... I haven't shopped forr a new pistol in a while.. should be fun.
  14. Some of you may already know this.. But I have a page on my website for uploading trail cam pics from NY... the thousands of NY hunters that view the site each day would love to see some of your photos... http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com/trail-cam-pics.html ... you can upload the pics using the form on the middle of the page.. Thanks
  15. I work hard on my camp, but i don't consider it HARD work... I enjoy doing it because I don't have any pressure to get it done yesterday... I can do it at my leisure... Like you said.. It's fun.. and very satisfying.
  16. I agree.. I would rather pay a bit more and buy from someone that supports gun ownership like my local gun dealer.
  17. ...telling me I now have a concealed carry permit.. I have had a sportmans permit for over 20 years, so I decides to apply a few months ago for a carry concealed. I went with my younger son to the sherrifs dept. so that he could get an apllication for a pistol permit. While I was there I asked what it would take to change my current permit to concealed carry. The woman behind the counter (a retired sherrifs deputy) said " If you have 10 minutes and your permit we can do it right now."... I couldn't get my permit out fast enough!! That was in April, so it took a while, but I received my notification today that all restrictions have been lifted on my permit... and I'm good to go.
  18. Advantech is always my choice... I have pulled up and replaced more delaminated plywood floors and roofs than I can remember. I am also a believer in 1/2" OSB and clips for roof sheathing as well... in fact I seldom use plywood for anything unless the customer requests it... and I always try to talk them out of it.
  19. Doc I think that the only reason mine isn't "stripped down" as well is that I am a builder by trade... so I can't help myself...
  20. I used 3/4" T&G OSB... I'm off the ground 3' so it's tough for the porks to get a good grip to eat at the floor.. be careful of the new plywoods.. the newer "green" type glues tend to delaminate over time... after 28 years of being a building I have found that OSB has proven itself to be far superior than most of the modern plywoods for longevity.
  21. I love the simplicity of camp... our camp is tucked in the woods... no electricity or running water... Coleman stove for cooking... candles and coleman lantern for lights... and an outhouse.. I wouldn't have it any other way and believe it or not my wife wouldn't either...which is great for me.. because when momma's happy... everyone is happy!!
  22. I am actually quite surprised at how voluntary AR's took off in recent years here in NY... somehow I think a lot of the younger hunters..(meaning the ones in their 30's) tend to be really into the qdm thing... the old-timers (65 plus) not so much... I really think that the prospect of bigger antlers is the driving force for younger guys which is disappointing to me, but it is what it is.
