I have a good recipe for carp.. get yourself a small piece of plywood and put the carp on it.. throw it in the oven for about 20 munutes then throw the carp away and eat the plywood... thought I'd fit a recipe into the thread

After looking at how the type of research they do and the criteria they have for making any changes.. I wouldn't count on it

I'm surprised you stayed away this long.. hope you have a Happy New Year Doc!

maybe the DEC considers 1,000,000 deer over population. But if my property has 999,999 and yours has 1. you might not see it that way...
-
lol.. my point would be that there isn't as much of a soil problem as there are bucks that don't get a chance to get old
-
I have never found it a problem to find a bigger buck I would like to kill...finding one I could kill has not always worked out as I wished...lol . Have a great New year Joe. Touche'... you have a great New Year too Culver!

Which is why Steuben Co has produced more record book bucks than any other County.

How about that is not a true qdm AR plan (3 on a side) that protects ALL yearlings... not even remotely the same as good qdm program... if you start calling that a true AR then... one 3" antler is an AR plan that doesn't workj for big bucks either.. We're talking here about an qdm type AR that protects all yearlings. The DEC study in those WMU's doesn't qualify. If you read thoroughly, it says " For hunters seeking to see more 2.5 year old bucks, antler restrictions may be effective." That refers to this particular AR plan which is not the same as a good qdm AR. But, even that AR produced a whole other age class.. of older bucks. And for the record, a passed on 1.5 year old still gets older when he moves to another property

Although the soil theory may be somewhat true and it is in a FEW areas! There are trophy class bucks taken in NY every year so the soil is not so bad that we CAN't grow 'em big. The reason we are not a state known for big bucks is because only a small percentage of the bucks get old enough to be big. You would be hard pressed to find a 5.5 or better buck anywhere in NY on a regular basis except maybe for the remote adirondacks. NY has no idea what the potential is for monster bucks because it has never been allowed to reach it.

can I get an amen??

I feel if the DEC feels there is no need for AR's then there is no need for them... I'm sure when they think there is a need they will implement them. Although I have always liked the idea of increasing the age structure of bucks..I have never found it a problem to find a bigger buck that I could kill..

You show me one study where QDM is in place where the guys have said that the buck quality and quantity isn't better... there isn't one... even where the AR's like 3 on a side (which doesn't protect all the yearlings) is in place have shown increases in the quantity of older bucks. The amount of really big bucks will depend on how strict the AR is. I understaand that there are a lot of people that have different opinions about AR's but you should base your opinion on fact. If you don't like AR's because you don't like the infringement on your freedom kill what you want, that's just fine. But saying that it doesn't produce more and bigger bucks is just flat out wrong.

In a way I agree with that.. nobody is knocking down NY's door to come hunting here. Many states have more to offer and get far more non-resident revenue because of it. Could be just the thing to boost revenues in NY by making it more attractive to hunt bigger bucks here. Not sure that we have the available hunting land like other states, but maybe

Doofus would be a good word to discribe him!!

Use to use a product called Lehigh Valley.. it might even still be available.. great stuff... now I use a mixture of denatured alcohol and Murphy's Oil Soap... 1/2 cup murphys wood oil soap 1/2 cup peroxyde 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol. Leave out the peroxyde if you will not be shooting the gun for a while... if you shoot patch and ball its great as a patch lube.. you will be able to put ball after ball down with ease without cleaning between.

I'd like to know how you get 2.5 and 3.5 year old bucks when you are killing all the bucks that would become 2.5 and 3.5... makes no sense. That would infer that the older bucks skip being younger and are older immediately upon their birth...

The math is simple if the coyotes kill one fawn for each 2 Coyotes that is 15,000 dead deer if they take only males(acording to your number count of the coyote) however, if they take all females the number increase exponentially do to the loss of future fawns and, females can bare 2 fawns a year that adds up quickly. Then add to that other natural losses weather, road kills, hunting seasons. The losses to coyote could be devistating to the deer herd. Since there are no "real" natural enemies to the Coyote here in NY that has the capacity to lower the population it is up to the human element to bring them under control if possible. Bad math.. you are forgetting that after your 15,000 fawns are killed and other natural losses plus hunting kills.... there are still over 800,000 deer left, most of which are replaced the following year by new fawns... 15,000 fawns is a drop in the bucket of what will be born in a year... there still is no way that 20-30,000 coyotes can be having an impact on 1 million whitetails.

If she can do a thesis on deer hunting in could do one on rocket science, because I know nothing about rocket science either! lol
