I sat all opening day this year, ate right at my post on the ridge.. This unit is good. One year, I had a propane stove become quite finicky in sub freezing temps. Ruined the trip, my hunt, and forced me to come in/home earlier than planned. Never again.

I picked up the 3 cable lock set from Sportsman's Guide- and they all came with 2 keys, and are all keyed the same.. I keep one in the truck & one all my key rings..

I thought so at first too.. If your adding milk/cream, it's cooling too much.. I mix up coffee with creamer/sugars in a big pyrex pitcher, then microwave covered for 3-5 minutes.. then place pitcher in sink & stir, to break surface tension, because sometimes it will spontaneously foam all up if you dont stir it after the micro.. then fill green Stanley.. You'll have HOT coffee all day.. You can also pre-heat the thermos with boiling water too for 15 minutes before filling, but with above microwave method its not needed..

On state land, I lock my hang on's platforms in the upright position with the cable lock so they're un-usable.. Yes, it is a pia to unlock & drop every hunt, but I know for a fact nobody used my stand..

LOL Don't be ashamed, I have a similar note in my truck- HEED WARNING SIGNS.. I went 'exploring' new a new state forest this year, Huntersfield, in the afternoon.. The GPS routed me to it using the north entrance, Huntersfield road.. I saw the "Seasonal Road sign", which never really worried me before, but I thought the "Enter at your own risk" sign was kind of interesting.. Anyway, the road climbs up, then got REALLY steep.. Trailblazer is in 4wd HI, I'm going up then having second thoughts, so I slow down to check the map, and stop. Big Mistake. I pick up the map, then I get the feeling of movement.. The truck is slowly sliding backwards, wheels locked up with the brakes floored! :'( I let easy up off the brakes while easing into the gas, in drive, speedo/rpms come up a bit but I'm still sliding backwards... ??? but its now starting to slide towards the 'low' side of the road, which is backed up with a pretty steel drop off & is really starting to worry me.. So I come off the gas, feather the brakes to get some wheel movement, cutting the wheel to get back to the road center, but no change... A few speedy quickie prayers, which seemed like S L O W M O T I O N, then it finally grabs.. and I keep it rolling back about 100 yards down hill to a lesser grade.. and sat there for 15 minutes to 'evaluate' my good fortune! :-[ Being stupid & stubborn, I located myself on the map, & decided to give it another try.. I did climb the hill, kept forward momentum, slayed out of the glazed tracks and made it with just a little wheel slip.. Lesson learned about stopping mid grade and will make sure to evaluate any 'Enter at Your Own Risk' signs in the future.. ( Wife didn't hear of this 'adventure', she's still complains about the hole in the bumper cover from 5 years ago..)

Good post, a lot of things mentioned are familiar to me from memories or stories from family members.. I remember the metal hand heaters with the fuel bars, not fluid heaters. I still use my father in laws' gas 3 burner Coleman stove, camp oven & catalyst heaters from the 70's. Hunting has become a more individual sport, because of society, & everyone's hectic schedules, as compared to yesteryear, when deer season superseded other things, and everyone did it..

Looking good! I always like to have some harvest for the holidays, but since nobody eats venison, it's usually a striper filet on Christmas eve.. How are you going to prepare it?

Put a contact/complaint number in your cell for the faa, or even diall 911. Call a complaint in saying he's operating in an erratic & dangerous fashion, and you have concerns over his & people on the grounds' safety.. Even if he's just questioned, I'm sure the pilot will consider his license more valuable than any hunter harassment..

I know this is late, but for opener & T-day weekend, I'd opt private land.. What did you do, & how'd ya make out?

My brother and another friend are home brewers, and I made wine for a few years.. If you like a certain brew, most home brew supply shops can set you up with ingredients to make something similar..

This drawing is always held on the first Tuesday of December. All entries must be received by 4:45 p.m. on the day before the drawing.There are no applications for this drawing. Yes & No.. The deer density is very low, so you will need to put some time in. In 2004ish, we hunted Moose River Plains for a week, nothing. Cut one track across a road. Ran into an old timer on a woods trail 2nd to last day, said there USED to be tons of deer in the 50's, pre-beech tree blight which knocked/s out most mast producing trees.. It kills the tree above ground only, and the root systems send up new trunks.. BUT they already diseased because of the common root system and die off in 5-8 years, years ahead of nut production.. His party of 5 saw nothing all week.. I'd reccomend hunt areas that have other multiple food sources, swampy areas, wild cherries/oaks/ ect.. Now the good news.. You have the chance of taking a buck that has never seen a person before. The antlers usually will be larger, as well as most bodies because the deer can get some years on them. I took a nice 8pt in 2003 from state land south of Corey, off Ampersand Road.. No monster, but a true adks trophy in my book. I plan on going back up there again, was a nice area.. Campsites & a horse trail that lead into the parcel so you could make good time..Some even loaded game haulers with their camp gear & took the horse trail in to set up camp.. Congrats on the Deer! Don't kick yourself too bad, it's all about re-learning forgotten skills our ancestors honed eons ago.. Every hunt is another lesson.. Enjoy the deer.

Most of these guys started out as hunters, now they sell 'antler porn'.. They commit to sponsors, networks that they will draw viewers, and need to fulfill thier commitments. Business is business. Realistically tho, who's gonna watch someone do all the actual work to find free ranging deer that we hunt, and then actual some awesome bucks that will get viewers to tune in?? So many go the ranch/preserve way, and make it a shooting show, not a hunt. Count how many don't fill their tags every show, and you'll have plenty of fingers leftover.. This is one thing I respected Barta for. Although he wasn't the most beloved TV personality, he never chose any easy way to fill a tag, and often didn't fill one..

Anyone notice the new signage being put up?? On parcels I know are state forest land, with 'State Forest Preserve' signs now have new signs added, that look like the NYC Watershed signs saying Hiking, hunting allowed.. Whats the deal with them, and what was wrong with the old traditional signs??

I have mixed feelings about these searches... Yes, it is an invasion of my privacy. Yes, it is humiliating. BUT, it's the ONLY way for the TSA to detect PTFN, an explosive which gets through 'old' enhanced security procedures.. Its a granular product much like common salt. Mixed into clay/playdoh, add a detonator, and you have a plastic explosive bomb. A few ounces can bring down a plane.. What I don't seem to understand is, how come 99.7% of law abiding citizenry gets this harassing treatment, yet 1 of 1000 intermodal storage containers gets searched while being brought into this county, or the US southern boarder looks like Walmart on 'black Friday'?? I could go on, but this new procedure really only 'punishes' the law abiding citizenry, just as NY Gun Laws do!
