  1. Varget will stack them on top of each other in my .30-06 and my .308 but if I use it in my .30-30 they are loose and about 8" high @ 100 yards! I used IMR 4198 and some RL7 in the .30-30 and they are tight and about 1.5-2" high @ 100. Crazy what a difference a slower burning powder will make in a particular rifle.
  2. There is no amount of money in the world that would get me to live down there and put up with it! I'd clean calf pens for $8/hour up here before I'd ever Subject myself to that. I can't see any pluses from here. From what I can remember that nutcase that shot up the movie theater didn't have any criminal background, neither did Charles Whitman and I'm sure there were others. Besides, the ones with violent criminal histories don't buy their guns in gunshops anyway.
  3. Don't see a feeder anywhere, just a buck working a licking branch over a scrape?
  4. One thing I noticed is that 30 measured yds looks a lot farther when I'm in my stand than it does when I'm standing on the lawn!
  5. I don't have much faith in any of the attractant scents. I've tried most of them through the years and I've had deer walk right next to them and not pay the slightest bit of attention. I do know a guy though who swears by using a drag soaked in doe urine to lay down a scent trail right by his stand. He has had good luck with it.
  6. I have a 7M left from two years ago, how about it? You didn't say it needed to be this year's!
  7. I live in 6P and have a friend who has access to land in 7J. Usually 6P has none for a 2nd choice so I put 7J in case I get a buck and get a chance to go with him I can use the 7J. If it looks like I'm not going to get a chance I will swap it for another 6P since I can walk out the back door and hunt there.
  8. The surest way is by looking at the wear patterns on the teeth. Other than that it is just estimation based on the appearance of different parts of the body.
  9. Saw off a leg and count the rings.

We don't have a "Mad Deer Containment Zone" anymore anyway.

    carcass

Only mention I found so far on the DEC website was regarding wildlife that was found dead. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6957.html "Carcass Disposal If there is no reason for submission and it is desirable to dispose of a carcass for sanitary or esthetic reasons, two options exist: Burial in a location that will protect both surface water and ground water from contamination. Keep at least 200 feet away from wells used to supply drinking water. Be sure the carcass is covered with at least 2 feet of soil. [*]Disposal at a landfill. [*]Triple-bag carcasses in all cases."
  12. HaHa! I just discovered the ignore feature. Brilliant!
  13. http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/68895.html "The prohibition on placing structures and storing personal property on all state lands without authorization from DEC became effective in May 2009. The regulation does allow for the following exceptions: a camping structure or equipment that is placed and used legally pursuant to the provisions of the state land use regulation; a tree stand or hunting blind that does not injure a tree, is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number, and is placed and used during big game season, migratory game bird season, or turkey season; a legally placed trap that is placed and used during trapping season; a wildlife viewing blind or stand that is placed for a duration not to exceed thirty (30) days in one location per calendar year, does not injure a tree, and is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number; or a geocache, except in the High Peaks Wilderness, that is labeled with the owner's name and address and installed in a manner that does not disturb the natural conditions of the site or injure a tree."
  14. This really even goes beyond AR's. If everyone followed this one simple rule there would be practically no hunting accidents of any kind. I can't say I could reliably count the points on the majority of bucks I've seen in the woods, but I can honestly say that I have been able to say whether there were three points/side on every buck that I have been close enough too to consider shooting. I'm not one for taking very long shots for one thing and for another, the area we hunt is pretty thick so long shot opportunities rarely come up anyway. And I say this as someone who has never been a rabid AR guy. And in response to the deer drives, most of the bucks we've gotten in the Big Woods have come off of drives but are generally just moseying along. The way we do most of them it would be more appropriate to call them "nudges" though because we'll have one or two guys as drivers and they'll hunt along and cover 3 to 5 miles before they get to the watchers.
  15. When I was 17 I had a friend's father give me a box of .30-06 handloads that came from a friend of his. They said "180 gr boattail" and nothing else written on a piece of masking tape stuck to the box. Being young and stupid I touched a couple off, one kicked like a mule and the other one felt about like a factory load. Fast forward 16 years and I'm a handloader myself. One day I decided to pull down the other 18 rounds thinking I could reuse the brass and maybe the bullets. Not only did I only find one boat tail and the rest were all flat base, I found three different charges and types of powder! Don't know enough about the listed load/components to opine whether they'd be good for deer or not.
  16. Personally, if it were my eyes and my rifle I wouldn't use them. While that load data sounds reasonable looking at Hodgdon's website, you got them third-hand and you can't really know for sure if that is actually what's in them. Looks like we were thinking the same thing Lawdwaz but you were quicker on the draw!
  17. The same kids could be out there shooting at squirrels up in the trees already.
  18. Two spots that I like are: the intersection of the two "T's" and the two "H's"; the light colored tree almost dead center where the tractor lane (?) crosses the hedgerow. Where do you access the property from and where are the prevailing winds from? That could make a difference too.
  19. Sometimes you don't even need clothes if it's warm enough and you're on private property!
  20. I hope you weren't holding your fork in the other hand!
  21. If you get one tag you can take one deer, two tags two deer. What difference does it make how long season is? It could be 6 months long, once someone tags out they're out of the woods anyway. If they have used their tags and are still killing deer then it wouldn't matter if season was open or not.
  22. I really have nothing but scorn for our current President but come on people, it only takes 2 seconds to verify stuff before you throw it out there. Some goofball reporter said that the Sate flag was a Union flag. http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/o/Obama-Master-Lock.htm http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/quotes/wisconsin.asp http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/16/obama-wisconsin-master-lock-politico_n_1281920.html http://www.inthesetimes.com/working/entry/12759/what_politicos_wisconsin_1848_union_screw-up_reveals/
  23. That white Thompson Center #13 bore cleaner stuff. Been working on the same bottle for around 10 years now.
