Never leave the house without a knife, a handkerchief and a way to start a fire. I've been carrying a Kershaw Scallion for the last ten years now.
-
I've been using the Nockturnals and so far I've had pretty good luck with them. I always carry a jacknife so I just use to turn them off. Larry, I like them because when I miss the target bag it's easier to find them in the lawn.

New Yorks Latest Crossbow Legislation News
covert replied to sits in trees's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
Actually these days almost all of the rifle hunters I know are ALSO bow hunters. One of the big reasons I am for crossbows (even though I don't personally want one) is that I am sick of the dorks who aren't willing to do the necessary practice, stumbling around the woods with vertical bows that do take skill. If some of them would take up crossbows we'd all be better off. -
dave6x6, I wasn't trying to say my way was better or worse than yours. I was merely attempting to point out that I cannot feel sympathy for a guy whose having issues because he is voluntarily seeking some "score" for his monster buck. Is it a huge good looking buck? Heck yes. Would I be going through the same turmoil if I killed it? Heck no. I stand by my statement that I will never have a buck measured. I go to work to make money, I hunt to get away from that kind of stuff; but I guess there truly isn't anything that Man won't monetize. Even if it came across that way, I don't have any problem with people who will only hunt for big deer just as I don't have a problem with people who take does, use crossbows, hunt with dogs or over bait (where legal), even though I don't care to. It just seems as though it is frequently stated and/or implied that there is something wrong with the people who don't mind taking a smaller buck. After hearing that so often you start to get a little punchy. Not accusing you of doing it, just giving an example.

Oh boy, here we go with the "us mature buck hunters" vs everybody else. No, actually I won't be looking for a tape measure because I wouldn't even be aware that it "might be a 215" typical". I couldn't look at a buck and even begin to guess whether it was a 120" or 300" or anything in between and I'm not interested in learning. I like to look at the pictures of big bucks but as soon as the numbers start flying around I "change the channel" so to speak. Not into the "horn porn" arguments.

The guy doesn't have to get torn apart by anyone if he doesn't want to. He could just take his deer and go home and not worry about what it "scores". Hang it on the wall and just say it's a "big sucker". I will never have a tape measure on any deer I ever shoot, I don't care how big it is.

Last year I shot 18 and never left my porch. This year I leased the farm and we have snap beans on all of it so there went the woodchucks. There are still a few around in the edges though and one of them has been running around with a little one the last couple days. The today on the way to work I saw two young ones eating on the shoulder of the road.

Albany county Pistol Permit
covert replied to biggamefish's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Oneida County has to have four people in the county who aren't related to you and have known you for at least five years. I have talked to people who got jammed up over that because they were new to the area and didn't have four people in the county who'd known them that long. -
When I mow, if it will fit under the front of the deck, it gets run through. If it's too big to fit under then I use the deck to push it off the edge of the lawn into the weeds.

Seems to me that the regular hunting course would be the place to have the crossbow training. You can use them during the gun/ML season without an archery license and you can't get an archery license until you take the regular hunting course anyway. Having it in there instead of the archery course would ensure everyone got the proper training.

Dream With Me...
covert replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Problem is: THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO MONEY TO BEGIN WITH! THEY PRODUCE NOTHING! ALL THEY HAVE, THEY TOOK FROM US IN THE FIRST PLACE! -
Mother was right, I should've married the Merganser.

I have an 1895M .450 Marlin and I don't find the recoil that unpleasant and from field positions, I would rather shoot it than a 12ga. In fact I think it kicks less than my 20ga Ithaca featherlight with slugs. Off the bench is another story altogether! Punishing comes to mind. I loaded some Barnes 250gr X-bullets with a max load and after three of them I picked my fillings up off the ground and quit for the day. Mine is not ported. Performance on deer was strange. I've shot two bucks with it, one with the 350gr FP Hornady and one with the 325gr Hornady Nerf bullets and both of them just kept walking and didn't miss a step. I kept shooting because I thought I was missing but I hit each one three times before they finally dropped. They were dead on their feet after the first shot but never reacted at all. Never bucked, jumped, ran, stumbled, blatted or gave any other indication that they had been hit, but they both had nice clean .458 caliber holes straight through them. It was disconcerting to say the least.

There are no leases that I know of. National Grid has a right-of-way across me and that's all it is. Their towers stand there and they can come on us to maintain the equipment and keep the vegetation trimmed. Every year they send us a packet with the info for the spray they plan on applying and when, but no check.

Depends how big the stuff is. The best way for bigger stuff is to wrap a chain around it and pull it out.

Not if you plant a teeny-tiny food plot in it.

Why did they even bother having a meeting? Reading the article it looks like the DEC should've just said "Ok, you guys just sit here and talk to this wall while I go take a nap." Says that they know the habitat is poor so there's nothing for the deer to eat but they aren't going to do any logging, might be able to close season a day earlier. PPPHHHBBBBTTTT, how's that going to give the deer any more to eat? We hunt 5Hand there's big Cherry and small spruce and beech whips. Not a whole lot to eat there. The League Club has been logging right across the line from where we are and you can stand at the line and look across acres of berry bushes, grasses, brush and know that's where the deer are. They say all we can do is "hope for milder winters". Well try hoping in one hand and crapping in the other and see which one fills up first. Get rid of this "Forever Wild" malarky that accomplishes nothing but create ecological deserts and selectively cut the darned woods. They could log up to within 100 yards of each side of the trail and 99% of the people who set foot in the Adirondacks would never know the difference because they don't go more than 15' off the trail anyway.

Update on fatal shooting Of Sheridan NY Fire Chief
covert replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
I don't think that I'm reading the same article as some of you guys regarding the father. I clicked on the link and nowhere did I see that he was hunting with diminished mental capacity. They said that he seemed to be suffering from a PTSD type problem which was causing him to block out the details of the incident, not that he was too senile to be hunting safely. And while I don't belive in mandatory Blaze orange laws (even though I use it myself) just like I don't believe in helmet laws or seatbelt laws (use them too) some of you are getting a bit ridiculous with your claims that it will increase accidents. It's like saying that when NY made car insurance mandatory it caused a huge spike in car accidents. I mean why not, if your insured anyway you might as well just ram into anything you feel like. -
Who? Oh wait, is that the chick from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome?

You have to watch the Chippewas though. Some of their boots are made in China too and what's really sneaky is that some models are made here and in China, so you have to make sure you check each pair before you buy them.I buy Work 1 brand for my work boots and Thorogood for hunting boots. They are both owned/made by Weinbrenner and they are US made and I did have a problem with a couple pairs over the years and I called and had replacements right away. One pair was over a year old and they replaced them with no trouble at all.

You can own anything you want, just don't get caught. The law specifically states that you can't possess any detachable magazines made after September 1994 that hold more than 10 rounds.
