You had your "Initiation Day: Part 1". Part 2 is getting busted while trying to do what nature and our bodies make us do. You will never forget the first time a deer comes in on you while doing your business and just cocks it's head, stares at you for a minute, then walks off as if to say "Really? In my woods?". You had a good day. You learned and you will progress. Good luck the rest of the season.

C'mon! The "Shutdown" was shutdown last week. Not going to happen. I am not saying the NYDN is FOS, but that proposed shutdown was been in the news for a while now, and it was blocked and won't happen: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/house-senate-send-obama-temporary-spending-bill-34142564 Jeez people. If you are so unhappy with Cuomo, STOP VOTING HIM IN!

That's a tough one to deal with. That bond is forever though! It might sound odd, but the bond was not all due to the camp, it was you and your dad sharing experiences and growing closer as family. The camp might be gone, but those memories of great times will be with you forever.

Bashing other hunters? Deja vu right here! I think I have brought this up in the past, and it does not help give a great image of who we are. I think I was clobbered pretty good on those threads. Live and learn. But, I have done it, many people in here who post regularly have done it. Sometimes we also take things out of context or portray what we mean the wrong way. Sometimes we are just being sarcastic. That's my big one, I am way to sarcastic for my own good and things get taken wrong. At least I know that and admit it. Yet, I am actually making a conscious effort to tone things down a bit. The thing is, where do you draw the line? Man, I was hit big with bashing to the point someone make a dummy account pretending to be my g/f. I think someone even called me a "wacko" and something about my life sucking. It is what it is, it's the internet. We judge people we have never met in person from posts on the web. As for new members knowing the deal? This forum is 100% visible to the public. So if someone had been reading for years, then decide to join they already know what to expect. They know they are coming into a situation where what they say might get hammered. You cannot blame them for that apprehension.

I actually see Mr VJP's point. The shooting in Chicago is in an over all sense political, as it goes into gun laws and rights and so on. I also see why the thread he made was moved as well, it took a left turn fast and everyone followed and the entire topic turned south. It did get political and the original theme of hunters bashing one another went straight out the window after just a few posts. The staff here have a right to do as they see fit with the site though, we are mere members here just like being a patron at a store. If not happy we can leave.

What's Your Preferred Method For Fall Turkey?
DirtTime replied to DirtTime's topic in Turkey Hunting
I would have been as well, but when my bow busted and I found out how much it would cost to fix I just decided it was time to make a few choices. Just buy a new bow, or buy a rifle. After a lot of thought for a few months, shooting a few bows and hitting local gun shops, I came across deals on a nice rifle and a shotgun that I just couldn't let them go. So I made the decision. New bow will wait till next year. I have razzed people about fall turkey, stating the same things greensider. But, I bought the shotgun, when you buy your turkey tags you get the fall one anyway, so why not go out and at least be hunting something. At least that's my reasoning. Why let the tag go to waste, and let a perfectly good shotgun sit ( or just be used for other small game ) while I sit out this years bow season? Glad we all agree deer is the thing to hunt in the fall, but this is in the turkey hunting boards............I will be hunting turkey and small game this fall. -
What's Your Preferred Method For Fall Turkey?
DirtTime replied to DirtTime's topic in Turkey Hunting
Thanks for the tips folks. I will be heading out in the morning to give it a try. Most of the area is pines, and there is scat in many different areas. I really didn't scout them too much, my scouting was looking for deer sign and where/what they are doing. I know, scouting is a big deal. I am excited to be heading out in the morning and trying something new, but not as amped up as if was heading after a deer. I think for tomorrow I will just sit in the am for a little and listed, then do a very slow walk and see what happens. -
Went to get mine today. Wally-frikin-world is a joke around me for hunting license. I went today, and just like last year, their whole system was down. I wasn't in the mood to drive 40 minutes backtracking to Dicks. The guy at the counter was nice and told me that a local gun shop issues them. I was unaware as I do not buy anything from this shop. Prices are a bit high ( on most items ). Anyway, had my tags in about 3 minutes, and then another 40 minutes looking around. If I had had the money I would have bought an old AR 74 ( I think that's what the tag said, bad handwriting ) in .22 for $300. I was shocked when the g/f was looking at compact Ruger pistols in .40.

LOL Eddie. I thought something was funny when I didn't have a key pad to type on. I guess the app doesn't do voice to text. The issue is the email I have on my phone is different then the one I have here. So it set up a new account for the email on my phone and the username for Scoutlook. User name should have been the same here but with a cap R, .....Rob. But, as you can see, it is not using that username, it's using odocoileus virginianus ( Funny terms yes, it's another name for whitetail deer ). I was trying to set it up for the live from the stand thread.

How Many Acres Do Think Is Enough To Hunt On?
DirtTime replied to DirtTime's topic in General Hunting
The goal of any hunting should be to kill w/e you are hunting for. If you just want to enjoy nature you can do that without dropping hundreds/thousands on hunting gear. Like hiking. I just love being outdoors as much as possible as well. But I do have goals, filling tags would be one of them, and being in the woods as much as possible is another. Are those goals a set in stone priority? Nope, just what I hope for during the seasons. Maybe hoping and having a goal are different, I guess that's a personal thing. As for acreage? We are done with living in the stink hole area we live in, and are looking at either renting a house or buying a house. We are looking at two right now, one has 5 acres, and one has 1.5 acres ( both rentals ) and are in the country and wooded land surrounding them. So If things go well I will just have a small get-to-gether/house warming and invite the neighbors and get a feel for how they feel about hunting and hopefully get permission to hunt the surrounding areas. I am changing my tune though, if we get the 5 acre place I will be out there next season with my bow. I still feel it's small, but I guess for just bow hunting it will be OK. -
Allow me to correct my phrasing: Not worth the risk to me. Now, please feel free to continue about trains, planes, and roller skates.

LOL! I still did not say it was wrong. I just stated a few factors that fall into play with a bow at those long ranges ( far, far more so then the average under 30 yard shots ). It seems those factors don't seem relevant. Hey, that's fine by me. W/E people are comfy with. Have at it people. My point was, not everyone shoots the same set up as in that article. Some people might be shooting 60 or 50#'s and a lighter over all arrow ( in general ). You aren't going to get the same results with the lighter set up. Guess I am wrong for thinking not everyone shoots the same bow, the same broadhead, the same arrow, and the same draw weight. I do apologize for trying to look at all the aspects for bow hunters shooting over 40 yards.

No problems with anyone asking questions, for the most part. The one that's frustrating is people who make a shot and then come on the web to ask for help. "I made a perfect shot but lost the deer, HELP!". You should have Deer Search programmed in your phone and call them, or friends and family to help locate the deer. Not hit the web asking what to do. Sorry, that one's just frustrating.

Good luck tomorrow. Lets see some kills.

OK. I read the article. It seems to prove the point of what I and many others have said. Taking a shot with a bow at that yardage is not worth the risk. They were also shooting a foam target that didn't move, has no bones to deflect the arrow on impact and most likely very light if any wind. So, that really only proved what that bow can do, with that arrow and that draw weight. It's really not statistics, stats in my book are using different bows and draw weights, different arrow weights etc to get an average. But, maybe I am nit picking. But we have too as bow hunters. Every shot has to be as precise as possible for a clean kill.

I was recommended the Muddy Commander from Cabelas. Due to money issues I am buying this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameristep-15-Two-Man-Ladderstand/36545660

Yeah, just me, but in this day and age I am not sure I would post a phone number either. Especially a cell phone number.

Post it right away! Then it has to be christened ( peeing on trees ). As for stands, it's SZ right? So you have some time to get stands/blinds in. Just don't stress it Biz. Relax a bit, and get the things done you can. If at worst, get a few of those seats that are light and strap to a tree and a few umbrellas meant for treestands. The hard part is over ( sort of LOL ), buying the place, now just enjoy it.

A gift? Who knows. Actually, if the deer 'wins' it does get a trophy, it's called life. At least for a day or so. A trophy isn't just about competition. A trophy can mean different things to different people. A recovering w/e can deem each week, month, or year a trophy. Someone who was told they will never walk again and did might consider the wheel chair they were confined to a trophy. So if the hunter who takes his first doe or spike wants to consider that a trophy who are we to disagree? If someone wants to call every fish they catch, deer they kill, rabbit they kill, or fly they sway a trophy so be it. To me, a trophy is anything in life you are proud of. Just my 3 cents.

nyantler is spot on. Actually, I am not even being argumentative. A bit sarcastic? maybe. Most of the people here are sarcastic. I didn't expect any answer to be the same. There is a general area where most bow hunters feel comfortable. Usually that is within' 30 yards. I have never once stated that taking longer shots is wrong. If you can do it and be consistent and not loose deer I think that's great. I did question some things, and they are valid questions. If wind can move a bullet 2 inches at 100 yards, surely it will move an arrow more then that. There's also angle. Shooting an arrow from a ground position and from a treestand are different, the POI changes in most cases. Also, even with todays 'super bows', an arrow looses speed pretty fast. So how much kinetic energy is left at 100 yards? Enough to make a clean kill if a rib is hit? I would like to see a few proven stats that lofting an arrow 100 yards at a deer/elk/sheep/ or w/e can be efficient and effective.

Used both. Had a Mossy 500 with a scope in 12, and Remmy 870 in 20 with a slug barrel and open rifle sites. 90% of the time I grabbed the 870. Rifles I have always used a scope. I did have an old 06 with a peep site, but at the time I had that I also had a Remmy 7400 in .270 with a Bushnell 3x9. The .270 was what I carried in the woods. I am thinking of adding a lever 30/30 to the cabinet, and I will not put a scope on that. I guess it just depends on what you like and are comfortable with.

You could also get a small utility trailer for the ATV. Some good ones for about $200. But again, snow or ice and the trailer can swing and take you for a ride you aren't going to like.

Only the cheap ones from Sportsman Guide. A solid real Katana ( folded a few hundred times ) isn't going to chip when it hit bone. Never runs out of ammo and can be sharpened with a rock. I am not a fan of the new spin off. If I remember correctly the original concept was to have another group of people dealing with the misery in a same time frame. Not a before and during crap fest. I kind of have a love hate issue with the split season. It's frustrating, but at the same time the second part of the season starts after football so at least there is something worth watching on Sunday night. I also just set up the DVR to record The Talking Dead. Never bothered with it before but it's a pretty good show in itself. Even though they never give spoilers. LOL
