How Many Acres Do Think Is Enough To Hunt On?
DirtTime replied to DirtTime's topic in General Hunting
Some very different answers on this one. If it was my own land and I had permission from all surrounding land owners in writing to track on their land I might do 5-10 acres with a bow with just me hunting. Would still rather have at least 20 all to myself. For me personally with a gun I want a lot of land. I might share 50 acres with another hunter if I have known them for a long, long time. Bullets fly a long way and they are known to ricochet at times. I like my space when hunting, and two gun hunters on 20 acres just isn't for me. I am not saying it can't work out, just how I feel. -
Well said. I don't really care how far you shoot at game with a bow. Have fun, enjoy the hunt, and good luck.

How Many Acres Do Think Is Enough To Hunt On?

Betting you all know each other though. The reason I brought this up was last season, the land owner had invited another guy to hunt the area. The day he was supposed to be there for a tour of the property was a day I was hunting. I left the blind and headed out. The other guy never showed up. I thought it would have been cool to have another hunter on there and we could have swapped phone numbers to make sure we didn't go into the others area on a given day and mess things up. Just to be civil and maybe get together for a few hunts and compare notes. While camping last weekend this topic was brought up by my buddy ( land owners son ). I said 100 acres is a lot, but not when you have a couple hunters on there that don't know one another or when the other will be hunting and where, that could get ugly. Gun hunting we need our space. Jamming people into stand's where you can whisper back and forth on private land was never my thing. Gun season I think people should be at least 200 yds apart. Bow at least 100. Just my opinion. -
You got robbed twice, and you are asking the web what you should do? Sorry that happened to you but you should be reporting these things ASAP.

This has been a question I have been wondering since last season. Private land I hunt is 100 acres. It's a narrow area that is longer then it is wide. Depending on how to look at it I guess. Might sound like a lot of land, but after walking the whole thing many times it really isn't that big. I would say maybe 2 for gun season, and 4 for bow. That being everyone knows where everyone else will be. I just can't see this being big enough for more then that. If I had my own land and just bow hunting, I would want at least 20 acres, and it would just be me hunting it. For gun, I would want at least 50 and again, just me in there.

Thank you grampy. I sat here and drew up plans to get it done and it is actually doable. The only issue is the inside of the tent. Same woodland camo as the outside. Have to look into a nylon spray on die to black out the inside.

Good question, I always proffered a mask. These days, I don't wear anything unless is super cold. I have to wear glasses so a mask or paint will do nothing if the sun reflects off my glasses, so it's kind of pointless for me.

Really? 85 huh? You gonna eat lunch while you wait for the arrow to either miss or wound the deer? Love the sarcasm on that one A Sportsman.

Had this idea in my head for a while now. This thread made me start thinking about it again: http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/29203-10-blind/ I will be retiring my old 9x9 camo tent. The tent itself is still in great condition, but, the poles are shot. Already talked about the poles in a different thread so not going into that. I can actually use this tent as a blind. Cut out the floor and window screens, use 5 sticks for support ( one in each corner and one for the center height ), instead of staking it out to 9x9 go 6x6 and pull the corners in making a smaller square shape, stake the fly down, re-water-proof it, and spay it with UV killer. Maybe even sew in some cord loops on the outside, seam seal them for brushing in. What do you think?

Makes sense.

The one that stays in the truck all season: Rope, para cord, spare compass, two knives, super glue, duct tape, pens, space blanket, lighters, bag of dryer lint ( great for starting fires ), spare gloves, binoculars, 6 bottles of water, a few packs of Mountain House meals, lighters, 2 flashlights, map of area, small poncho, first aid kit, TP, and a bottle of Alieve. Day carry ( Sometimes, I don't always carry a pack ): Dragging rope, small amount of para cord, super glue, TP, pens, spare knife, spare flashlight, duct tape, 2 bottles of water, compass, binoculars, baby wipes, spare ammo, and lunch + thermos of coffee if an all day sit. If just a morning or evening sit, I just put things in my pockets. All you need is your weapon ( ammo if gun hunting ), a knife, flashlight, a pen, and dragging rope.

Shooter for sure. But, why would other people hunting the land make you edit the pic? That's a little strange.

Do you have permission to hunt the land? I would talk to the landowner of this property before talking to the people walking a dog. They might be friends with the land owner as well and land owner won't care about a dog being walked on the property. Sounds like a small area if other neighbors are calling the police for you shooting.

Great find for $10 wooly. Those square blinds are easy to jimmy-rig a pole set up. 4 fallen ( not rotted ) branches for each corner, wrap the top that will make contact with the material with duct tape so it doesn't make a hole, don't really need the hubs or a center pole, set it up with a branch over head, tie a pinch of the top with para cord and then to the branch for the center height. Brush it in and go. You have a good set here. Brush in makes it very well hidden. Very nice for for probably less then $15 with rope and steaks.

We have a reality/competition show about weathermen in now. How much faith can you put in anymore. Maybe we need a "Dancing With The Stars" weather app.

For all the people hunting the NZ you must be ready and antsy! Bow season opens this Sunday. Good luck.

This quote is what I think of. Short, quick to the shoulder, light, and open (iron) sites. Growing up most of the people I knew that used this term ( some even used 'bush gun' ) had a lever in 30/30, 35, or 44 mag. in the rack or cabinet. These days compact bolt actions can do just as well. There are some good ones on the market and with some practice you can cycle to the next shot with a bolt action as fast as a pump action, and be pretty close to a lever. Another great choice, even in 20 ga. . When it comes to a shotgun you can never go wrong with an Ithaca! Or any shotgun with a shorter slug barrel. If a rifle is what you really want I would go lever in 30/30. Light on recoil, super easy to maneuver, pretty darn fast on manual cycling, and if you are under 125 yds ( like mentioned ) the only deer getting away will be from hunter error. Good luck no matter what you decide on. Let us know with a few pics.

High scores are great, but I seriously doubt many would let this buck walk. I wouldn't. To be honest, if I had something even close to this I would be waiting for him all season and if I ate tag soup so be it. I might not be a rack hunter but this one get my attention, and keep it. I agree and I hope your buddy gets him WNY Bowhunter. If not and you let him pass he should be really huge next season.

I was spot on with that one! LOL! Religion is the easiest soap box to have kicked out from under you. Catholics can't even stand together as united. There are at least 8 forms, and that's not including all the "Reborn" ones. Perhaps if they could figure that out more people would follow. Isn't there a passage about Jesus saying "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!"? So, isn't this "Mr. Irving" casting a stone? I have a you trow a rock at me, I will throw one back mentality, if you are throwing rocks at me in Gods name to line your pockets with money! Yes, in a way, that is being a martyr. You are trying to turn people against one another for your own gain. It's just that simple. This part also cracks me up: Funny how the part in red is actually sort of an oxymoron. In the beginning did they not sacrifice lambs ( and other animals ) to God by fire? That's pretty cruel to an animal. I am not attacking anyone who is religious. Teach your kids about the bible. I support that 100%! Actually, if you teach them enough the Bible will teach you self reliance. Because isn't there even a part in the Bible that states "God helps those who help themselves."? If I want to confess about leaving the toilet seat up, or eating the last stuffed pepper, I will pray and ask forgiveness directly and cut out the middle man.

Ah crap on a cracker! He's going in order and I must be next and I missed the "Going To Mass" sin.

This is a great buck. Looks like a 9, looks like left tip has a split making 4 on the right and 5 on the left.

If you plan to stay close to home why not use a tent and make a weekend of it. Just go to one your normal spots that you know and set up a camp?
-
So, it's not actually about archery or even the normal gun seasons? It's about muzzle loaders all he way? The other two seasons have to eat a slice of crap pie for the muzzle loading season? That's going to help things how?

Is the DEC sucking the tailpipe of diesel engines or what? They want a higher doe take, but, reduce the amount of DMP's 20-30% from last year. Isn't that like putting your boots on your hands and wondering why your feet get cold? Yep, we are all in for a rough few years. They making less and less sense with all these foolish changes.
