Update! He is a she! An immature female Goshawk. Prognosis is wait and see. Broken left wing and suffering from shock when it came in. Seems to be a bit better this morning. But is not eating. If she pulls through the next few days, she will be sent to a NYS raptor rehab place, for possible release back to the wild. Or kept for educational activities. That's all I got. If I learn more, I'll be sure to share it here. I'm really hoping she pulls through. But nature does not always give a happy ending.

It had a wing injury for sure. But I was very surprised at how docile it was. Hardly put up a fight at all. And didn't struggle at all when holding it. When I first grabbed it, I thought, "what the hell are you doing"? But could easily tell it was hurt but alert. So I hoped it wouldn't take a chunk out of me!....lol. But he wouldn't have made it long on that road, that I'm sure of. I too did think some type of poisoning and then perhaps injured by a passing vehicle? I'll contact the sheriff's dept. tomorrow to see where they brought him and follow up.

Great pic's! Those things really are a throw back to the dinosaurs.

A place in the town of Middleburg is all I was told. I'm very familiar with Red Tails, don't think it was one of them. Although maybe it could very well be an immature red tail? He looks much bigger in the pic because of the outstretched arms. He was less than 12 inches tall. Tail feathers were gray and black. He was also soaking wet as it had just poured rain. So all his feathers were a bit ruffled too. I've always loved watching birds of prey. Being part native american, they hold much symbolism and power in the native culture, as spirit birds. Was an honor to hold him. I'll try to find out how he made out.

After work I had some business in the town of Scoharie. Finished up what I had to do and was heading home on Rt.30. A couple miles outside of Scoharie, I notice something moving on the side of the road, and see a bird that appeared to be injured. I pulled over, went back and he was going into the road. I quickly scooped him up. He was quite docile and did not struggle much at all. Someone else pulled over and called police. Police called a wildlife vet, and after I wrapped him in a towel took him, away. No doubt he would have been killed on busy Rt. 30. I hope he makes it. Seemed like a wing injury. I think it was a falcon, but not sure? Can anyone make a positive ID? His talons were impressive.

Fisher denied. Don't mess with my cat!
grampy replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Cats are no slouch when it comes to tooth and claw. But it took some moxy to tackle a fisher! Good Kitty! Some awesome pictures right there! -
Yes sir, you're spot on. In the second picture, look at the girth, top to bottom behind the front shoulder. That is a mature buck right there. As wooly says, unless you have a history with him. The only accurate way to age a buck like this is to get em on the ground! C'mon Eddie! We're pullin for ya!
-
Couple more years, he'll be a real nice buck!..........grin

I know I've said this before, but your grit and determination, is rarely seen in a lot hunters! Myself included! You really are the Ever ready bunny!
-
There ya go! Since you and Sis teamed up for a trophy bird in the spring. It would be so cool to see you two, team up on a trophy buck during fall! Good luck buddy!!! Go Team wooly!

What a beautiful buck! Along with the double throat patch, he has everything else to make him so nice! Is this an area that you can hunt? He sure would make a great mount for Sis!

In years past, I used to do all day sits quite often. Mostly during the month of of November. But if I had the time, chores done, work and family obligations taken care of, I would pull all dayers, where I could. Now, my body will not let me do an all day sit. Nor will I want to during times of low deer activity. I may be out all day though! But usually sit from before light to 11 or 12. come out to my truck, for a coffee and hard roll or something like that. Loosen up and warm all the body parts that need it. Then move to a different set up, based on time of year and what I think the deer are doing. Usually I'm only out an hour or so then head back in. On November 10th and a few days either side of that date, I bring my coffee and eats with me. I may move to another close by set up, if the wind shifts or something. But at this point of the season, I've chosen a certain set up for good reason and will not move.

Since I like to have a large tree to my back in my ground blinds. I get those two foot long screw in hangers, with the angled sections. I position it over my left shouder, and hang my bow, so I need only to move my hand slightly to grab the bow grip. This is good to warm cold fingers or to streach a bit. But during prime time, that bow is always in my hands!
-
Dang Larry, you should of moved out to California and done beach movies!

Just curious as to how wide everyone thinks this awesome buck is? My official guess is 22 and 1/2 inches. Fletch can let us all know the "official" measurement when he gets him on the ground!

Gotta say, this looks like a real sweet deal and crossbow! And all the reviews are really good too!

Thanks everyone! I had to take a few minutes between shots, and was a bit sore after shooting. Was only going to shoot 1 to 3 arrows. Ended up shooting 9! What has helped is shooting that same bow and set up for so long, since 2000. It really is just an extension of my arm now, as far as anchor and such. If I can get it back, and hold it, the rest just comes automatic. Will start out shooting a few every third day, for now, and build off that. There really was a time, pre and post surgery that I though my bow hunting days were done. And perhaps they would be, if not for my grandson. In between his sports practices, games, school, and activities at least two times a week, I'd sit with him while he shot his bow. And each time he would ask, "how long before you can shoot with me grampy"? That kept me working harder, along with the prodding from PT people, family and friends. The next deer I shoot will be my best ever, no matter what it is! And Zac's first deer will be the ultimate achievement for us both! I'm truly so very happy, and grateful, to still be able to call myself a bow hunter!!!
