  1. A lot of the old time Adirondack hunters used the 200lb mark, for a big buck, not so much antler size. I have killed close to 70 bucks and have only three that were weighed over 200lb.
  2. Always so sad when a loved pet passes on. RIP Mr. Max.
  3. For me it always has been and always will be 30 yards. Over the years there have been a couple slightly longer shots. But a high percentage of my bow kills have been 20 yards or less. For me, bowhunting is getting as close to deer as I can get. That is what gets my heart pounding. Not long range shots. I do practice out to 60 and 70 yards, getting 7 out of 10 in an eight inch circle. At 30 yards I get 80 percent in a four inch circle. And at 20 yards 90 percent in a two inch circle. What others do, does not concern me.
  4. Picked up a three pack of these at Dicks today. On sale after rebate for $14.99. Got the 100 gr. Two blade, one and seven eighth inch cut. Anyone have any experience with these heads? I've used NAP Thunderhead fixed blades for years with great results on the compound. Guess I'll give em a try and post back how they work out.
  5. As long as I'm slinging a stick with a string, be it compound or crossbow. Maximum shooting distance at game will stay at 30 yards for me. Even though I can hit "targets" from much farther out. I like getting close to the deer I hunt. And will leave the long range shooting to others.
  6. I mostly hunt from natural ground blinds now. And have milk crates in them all. So I always have the majority of practice time, sitting on a milk crate. Even when tree stand hunting, I've always shot from a sitting position when I could. Two reasons, one like you stated, it keeps movement to a minimum, essential in ground blind hunting. Two, I seem to be able to hold more steady from a sitting position. I always have my knees to the right to have plenty of room for the bow, right handed. And have spent countless hours perfecting the form needed to shoot from a sitting position.
  7. Thanks again guys! He is a BIG boy for his age, 6'1"190 and still growing! Turned 12 last April. He's an all star catcher and captain on the travel baseball team. With multiple HRs, sometimes even in the same game. His season started back in January, and will end in mid October. Hunting and baseball are his passion. The football coaches are all over him to play but he's not interested. He carries a 90+ average in school and is always helping other kids do better. And standing up for anti bullying. He already has his goal set to play college baseball. We will see, he does have the size and natural talent. And very coachable. Ever since he started walking, he's been following me around in the woods. He can now walk quietly and become part of the woods as he moves. Can be still when he needs to be and is always asking questions about what he sees and hears in the woods. Been tagging along on hunts since age 6 or 7. He is there to help with chores without asking. And I am there for him if he needs anything. This year he wants very much to kill a deer. I'll do all I can to help him do that. There will come a time when he will hunt without me. He will be just fine! Hopefully he will pass on what he learns from me, to someone else. To keep the hunting traditions strong. As hunters, the most precious gift we can give back to hunting, is another hunter. I think I've done that.
  8. A natural ground blind 70 yards up from the creek bottom. In a hemlock grove, between two oak ridges. A great early season spot.
  9. Cant wait to see it finished and better yet, the cool shots you will surely be getting! Nice work!
  10. I ran out of likes, but thanks so much everyone! As my time in the hunting woods is nearer to ending than beginning. It warms my heart to know, I bring someone along, who will walk my steps, when I no longer can.
  11. Recurve, compound, crossbow, 20, 16 and 12 guage shotguns, TC ML and 7mm-08 rifle.
  12. No matter what he scores, that is a buck that most any NY hunter would be proud to take! Once you put your hands on him, it will be much easier and accurate to score him. Best of luck, for you to do just that.
  13. My 12 year old grandson passed his NYS Hunter Education Course today! I'm very proud of him, he got a 92 on final exam. The course instructors were all excellent and did a great job. Even asked me to do a brief presentation about Deer Search. He will be doing the Bow Course next weekend. And sitting in a ground blind this October with grampy! I'll do all I can, to make his dream come true of killing his first deer. Though we are so many years apart our eyes and hearts, have the same fire.
  14. Looks like the same group the Mrs. and I passed. My ribs are healing nicely.
  15. He's a very nice buck! And he looks great on your wall! So it shouldn't matter how old he is. But my guess would be a two year old. Not that it takes away anything at all from a great deer!
  16. These crisp cool mornings got me feeling pert as a ruttin buck!
  17. The #1 problem the Bills have. Is having the 2 Ryan's! Both are over rated and proven losers!
  18. Does this mean the Duck Dynasty show will be canceled?

    Foot odor

Try the Dr. Sholls Odor X boot inserts. Charcoal activated. Guaranteed to work! Sprinkle Arm and Hammer baking powder in your hunting boots as well. I don't really have a foot odor problem. But use these to help with scent control. To leave as little scent as possible on the ground. Does it work? Don't know, but it can't hurt.
  20. As I get older, I have enough methane gas available to to make my own Eternal Flame.
  21. Can we please get a "how to" make our own, with pictures? They are just so cool, I gotta try to make one!
  22. First NYS big game kill posted this year! Congratulations! Butchering today?
