For the first time, the Savage Axis in 7mm/08 shooting Federal 140 grain Nosler B.T. Topped with a Leupold VX-1 3x9x40 Duplex Reticle. Back-up will be an Ithaca Deerslayer 2, topped with a Leupold 1x4 that has killed many a deer and will kill a few more before it's retired.

Late September rabbit and squirrel hunting with the brilliant fall colors everywhere except in the bluest of sky.

Primos doe bleat in a can. Never to blind call, only when I can see the deer I'm calling to. Older Quaker Boy grunt tube. Used sparingly. And same as above. I hunt mostly from the ground now and don't like to blind call to deer I can't see. I don't want them to pinpoint me before I know they are there.

Early Bow Season - How long do you let your deer hang?
grampy replied to jrussell's topic in Bow Hunting
I too have had very little sleep before a work day, after recovering and cutting up a deer during early season or warm temperatures. You need to have a plan in place before you shoot! It also has made me VERY selective with my shots to insure a quick recovery. Good that the OP is thinking about this before the shot. Way to go! -
I do a LOT of snowshoeing. I break my own trails, up and down hill and through deep powder. The last couple of years I have been using the LL Bean made by Tubbs aluminum shoes. They have a great binding system that does not keep coming off or loosening every few hundred yards. It also has an axle and crampon under the ball of your foot for excellent control up and down slopes. And they are feather light compared to the wooden shoes. Yes, they can be a bit noisey in very thick cover but any shoe is a real pain in the thickets. Just slow down and they are quiet enough to hunt with. And they are guaranteed for life, no questions. If something breaks, just return them for a new pair. I have done this myself.

This past week I was putting up window blinds in the new house. Can't tell you how many times I "lost" the drill bit, screwdriver, measuring tape, screws for the blinds and my glasses! Spent more time looking for "lost" items than actually putting up the blinds. Then get huffy and puffy because I can't find them. lol! My wife just shakes her head and laughs at me. Whoever said that getting old is not for sissy's was right on!

Leaving the stand on the other side of the wall with a note, is what I would have done. The ball is now in his court. See what happens next before taking the next step.

What will cause you to drop a dime on another hunter?

What will cause you to drop a dime on another hunter?

Yesterday, I was down to the local Agway and ran into a guy that lives down the road a ways. Not a friend but I've known him for years. He had eight bags of cracked corn that he had just purchased. I said "hi, what's up", he came right out and told me he was getting ready for deer season in four weeks! I mumbled something like "yeah, too bad" and walked away. The more I thought about it the more mad I am at myself for not totally going off on this guy/poacher. Would it have made any difference? Probably not. Should I call DEC and drop a dime? What do I tell them, so and so was buying corn to bait deer? Even if he doesn't have livestock, it's not illegal to buy corn. And the thing is, this Agway will be almost sold out of "feed", between now and hunting season. Apparently there are a lot of poachers in this area baiting deer. And most if not all should know better! -
After more than 40 hunting seasons, I still am lucky to get 4 or 5 hours sleep the night before the opening of firearms season. I'm still a kid at heart!

I'm not a fan of extreams, hot or cold. But whatever it is, I just deal with it.

The years of working with printing presses and age, have really done a number on my hearing. Not only is my hearing getting bad, but it's hard to tell the direction of the sound I do hear in the woods. Last year about halfway through bow season, I heard that deer walking in very crunchy leaves sound behind me. So I get turned a bit searching for the source of the sound behind me. And it's geeting louder! And I dont don't see anything! Finally I turn around to see a young doe feeding on acorns less than twenty yards in FRONT of me. Oh...where did she come from?.......lol

I like these posts where someone posts a picture of a deer and says, how old is he? I also like to post my GUESS ! I'm no expert by any means whatsoever. And I do know bucks vary greatly in size and antlers throughout NY state. I always hope that the hunter that posts the pic, kills the buck and reposts his actual age. So, just for fun I'll keep posting my GUESS on how old I think that buck is.

Great pic's! Hoping they stick around for you. Good luck!

Looks like it could be a good spot! I noticed a small clearing at about 10 oclock on the property. With a NW wind, set up on the east or southeast side of that little clearing and you may catch deer moving in the pinch point between you and the open field. Some good info in the prior posts too. Best of luck to ya!

Nice shooting! That looks like fun. We have a lot of crows here, might give it a try. What set up are you using and what if any calls do you use?
