  1. Really looks great! growalot sure does fit you well!
  2. All the old guy's who took my buddy and I under their wing, to show us the hunting do's and don'ts have all passed on. The last one, Ol Ray, passed last April. Now we are the "old guy's ". And to the best of my abilities, I will pass on to the young hunters in our area and families the patience and kindness that was given to me by some good old guys.
  3. This is my first year hunting with a rifle. And this summer I have had a great time shooting all different brands of factory ammo through my Savage Axis in 7mm/08. Some of the best ones have been Remington core loc's in 120 and 140 gr., Hornady Whitetail 140gr. But I am going to hunt with the Federal Nosler BT in 140 gr. This round groups at 1 to 1.5 inches at 150 yards. I am hoping that if I do my part, this round will give me dead right there performance on deer. We will see! On my old Ithaca Deerslayer 2, the best slug for that gun is the Remington copper sabots, 12g. two and three quarter inch. Nothing I ever tried in that gun came close to them, in accuracy or performance.
  4. I used the slick tricks with my crossbow last year and will again this year. They fly true for me. But look for yourself and find what's best for you and your set up.
  5. Really surprised it hasn't been found yet in the Pine Bush. I know for a fact that a few law enforcement guy's hunt there.
  6. They probably won't come out in the open during daylight hours with all that commotion going on. But I don't think that they will all just up and leave the woodlot if they are not bothered in there and still feel secure. Keep your cams going and that will give you a good idea of what's going on. Good luck!
  7. He is very unique. I have never killed one quite like him. I would be proud to put my tag on him!
  8. For the first time, the Savage Axis in 7mm/08 shooting Federal 140 grain Nosler B.T. Topped with a Leupold VX-1 3x9x40 Duplex Reticle. Back-up will be an Ithaca Deerslayer 2, topped with a Leupold 1x4 that has killed many a deer and will kill a few more before it's retired.
  9. Late September rabbit and squirrel hunting with the brilliant fall colors everywhere except in the bluest of sky.
  10. Primos doe bleat in a can. Never to blind call, only when I can see the deer I'm calling to. Older Quaker Boy grunt tube. Used sparingly. And same as above. I hunt mostly from the ground now and don't like to blind call to deer I can't see. I don't want them to pinpoint me before I know they are there.
  11. My old Ithaca Model 37 16 gauge for bunnies. Boom = Bunnie
  12. Wow! An awesome buck! Hope to see your smiling face in a picture with him this season!
  13. I too have had very little sleep before a work day, after recovering and cutting up a deer during early season or warm temperatures. You need to have a plan in place before you shoot! It also has made me VERY selective with my shots to insure a quick recovery. Good that the OP is thinking about this before the shot. Way to go!
  14. I do a LOT of snowshoeing. I break my own trails, up and down hill and through deep powder. The last couple of years I have been using the LL Bean made by Tubbs aluminum shoes. They have a great binding system that does not keep coming off or loosening every few hundred yards. It also has an axle and crampon under the ball of your foot for excellent control up and down slopes. And they are feather light compared to the wooden shoes. Yes, they can be a bit noisey in very thick cover but any shoe is a real pain in the thickets. Just slow down and they are quiet enough to hunt with. And they are guaranteed for life, no questions. If something breaks, just return them for a new pair. I have done this myself.
  15. This past week I was putting up window blinds in the new house. Can't tell you how many times I "lost" the drill bit, screwdriver, measuring tape, screws for the blinds and my glasses! Spent more time looking for "lost" items than actually putting up the blinds. Then get huffy and puffy because I can't find them. lol! My wife just shakes her head and laughs at me. Whoever said that getting old is not for sissy's was right on!
  16. Leaving the stand on the other side of the wall with a note, is what I would have done. The ball is now in his court. See what happens next before taking the next step.
  17. Yesterday, I was down to the local Agway and ran into a guy that lives down the road a ways. Not a friend but I've known him for years. He had eight bags of cracked corn that he had just purchased. I said "hi, what's up", he came right out and told me he was getting ready for deer season in four weeks! I mumbled something like "yeah, too bad" and walked away. The more I thought about it the more mad I am at myself for not totally going off on this guy/poacher. Would it have made any difference? Probably not. Should I call DEC and drop a dime? What do I tell them, so and so was buying corn to bait deer? Even if he doesn't have livestock, it's not illegal to buy corn. And the thing is, this Agway will be almost sold out of "feed", between now and hunting season. Apparently there are a lot of poachers in this area baiting deer. And most if not all should know better!
  18. After more than 40 hunting seasons, I still am lucky to get 4 or 5 hours sleep the night before the opening of firearms season. I'm still a kid at heart!
