  1. I have an H and R 12 g single shot that I used when tracking for Deer Search. It has just a single bead for sights. It has put down quite a few deer that jumped up in front of me that were already wounded. Most all of the other trackers used a handgun. But the shotgun was light and easier for me to to swing on target for quick shots. I also painted the bead blaze orange, to help with a quick target accusation. And practiced shooting this way quite a bit. I also custom made a two point nylon sling that kept it out of the way but I could reach back with my left hand to bring on target very quickly.
  2. I will be in Vermont next weekend. Then will have a three day weekend around the 10th. Early on I'll hit some fringe set ups and scout/hunt until the last part of October, hunting early and late in the day. Come late October, I will start to get much more serious. I'll then move to my best and proven set ups and put in much more time in my spots. Will have a bunch of days off in November to hunt.
  3. I practice regularly from 10 to 60 yards. My effective hunting range is 30 yards. My longest kill shot was 37 yards, a few years ago. Most of my kills have been 20 yards or closer.
  4. Sounds like it will be a fun trip! I think most us are getting the itch to get out there at this point!
  5. Just get in there and hunt! They are deer. Not the mythical creatures that can read your mind, know your intentions, bank account number and your mom's maiden name. Just deer!
  6. One of the first things I learned about taking the young future hunters out with me. Is to make sure they are comfy and have a little wiggle room. Because at first they do tend to wiggle, a lot! Well, it looks comfortable enough and has plenty of wiggle room! I think you got it covered nicely! Good luck this season!
  7. What size flat screen are you putting in for the football games? Heat? Room service? Nice job! Looks like an awesome spot.
  8. Shot my bow last night. Used 100gr. Thunderhead fixed three blade, Muzzy 100gr. fixed three blade and 100gr. field points. All shot pretty much the same POI. from my old Matthews solo cam, set at 53 pounds. After using the Thunderheads for years, I'm thinking about switching to the Muzzy's. They seem to fly just a tiny bit better out of my set up.
  9. Thanks burmjohn! This is a great hunting site, filled with excellent information on a wide range of hunting and outdoor activities. There is also an array of insightful and knowledgeable hunters and outdoors people as members. Who are willing to share their hunting stories, photo's, and advice, that makes coming here so interesting. Great job, for maintaining an outstanding place for us all to gather. A tip o' the hat to you and our moderators!
  10. I use the 100 grain Slick Trick with my crossbow set up. They are very accurate out to 60 yards during practice. Not sure if it relates, but hope they work well for you too.
  11. So true Doc! The small property that has deer will be more productive than the large property that holds few deer. And to answer the the original question, my opinion is to have at least ten acres per hunter. I have the 45 acre property by the the lake, the farm where I grew up is 375 acres, and only my buddy and I hunt these. But every now and then we will invite a friend or relative to join us. My Grandsons will hunt here as well. I also have another farm of 400 plus acres that I have permission to hunt and share with my brother and three other guy's. The 45 acre property is a natural funnel and at certain times, we see more deer there than all the other properties combined.
  12. Long range shots are definitely not for me. 30 yards is my hunting limit. That being said, if another hunter regularly practices 100 yard shots and can consistently hit his target at longer ranges. Understands what it takes to pull it off and knows when not to attempt the shot. Then who am I to judge, for hunting different than I do. It beats the devine intervention shot. If you are skilled enough to make long range shots, I will withhold judgment. As stated above, out west,a 50 yard shot is as common as a 20 yard shot here.
  13. That was one heck of a yearling buck. He would have been a super deer in 2 or 3 years. Too bad.
  14. Oh yeah.......some tasty, smokey, goodness right there!
  15. I use a camo bandana . With my hat pulled down low .
  16. At 58, I don't hunt from trees much anymore. Can't imagine being in one at 70. And definitely not without a harness!
  17. Good choice! Now get out there and put some rounds down range and enjoy your new baby! Good luck with it this season!
  18. Still need to brush in a few more ground blinds, move one ladder stand and put on the new broadheads (same as last years), find more camo and boots that will fit my grandson (he's growing fast). Other than a few small things, we will be ready to go!
  19. Bump. We are the same age! You in years, me in spirit!
  20. A very nice batch of stuff, and all for free! Whoo Hoo! Nice!
  21. Go for it. Brush it in real good, and you will be much more comfortable on those rainy - snowy days. Good luck!
  22. HuntOrBeHunted ! Hope you have plans, with family, friends and an all around good time! Best of luck to you this season too!
  23. At Christmas time someone always gives me a pack of these. Sometimes, I'll even use them to gut the deer. But I ALWAYS use them to put the liver and heart in, to bring to a neighbor, who cooks them up.
