Congratulations Dan!!! Way to go sir! Did you happen to make the shot with your 7mm-08 mountain rifle? -
I agree Larry. The book Dead On, was written by my blood tracking, and Deer Search mentor John Jeanneney. John is a founding member of Deer Search. He was also instrumental, in having the NYS legislation passed, to allow leashed tracking dogs in NY. And many other states now. John has been on on thousands of blood trails. And he shares his wealth of knowledge in this book. I'm very proud to say I've spent a lot of time with John, in the woods, tracking deer, beginning in 1997. I learned so much from him. And anyone who reads this book will learn something about blood tracking too. No matter how much experience they may have. It will help any deer hunter at some point, guaranteed! luberhill, how I came to meet John, was because I made a bad hit on a deer myself. I looked for, and followed a sparse blood trail, until there was nothing left to follow. And then looked some more. I felt terrible, because I knew I took a shot that I probably should not have taken. I'd heard about John and his dogs. And he only lived less than a mile from me at the time, so I gave him a call. He came out with Sabina, a world class tracking dog. And though she was one of the best I've ever seen, we never found my deer. A front leg hit is what John said. Sometimes you get em, most times not. But from that lost deer, and my beginning with John, I've helped many other hunters find deer, that may not have been found. Something positive came from that lost deer of mine. I hope something positive comes from yours too my friend. It happens to us all. And if something is Iearned from a loss, all is not lost.

Dogs won't help with a recovery, as the deer is still alive. The leg will likely clot up, and leave no, or a very sparse blood trail. If infection or coyotes don't set in, it "may" recover and live with three legs? Just curious why the 100 yard frontal chest shot, and not wanting to wait for it to turn broadside? I'm NOT bashing you!! And wish it worked out better for you, I really do. But if the info can help someone else down the road.... great.

Leg hit. Pretty sure.

A much deserved break for the pups and you Tom. Enjoy! And thanks for sharing with us again this year. 32 recoveries by the "Dream Team" !!! Great work!!!

Whoohoo!!! My lifelong hunting partner Gary got one down this afternoon! Was running a doe and grunting. We have both been holding out for the better bucks we know are here. Been hunting hard for sure. Finally got one. I'm on deck this weekend.- 8220 replies

We can get together for some predator hunting Paul. You are welcome to put my AR on the sticks and try it out. Would like to get some yote blood on it! -

I do think all the thermal and IR scopes, and dedicated predator rigs are really very cool!!!! But I can't afford a $2,500 scope just to shoot coyotes. A $3,500 plus, predator rig is certainly really snazzy, and if you are really into it, worth every penny! But if you just want to go out and bang some song dogs, it can be done on the cheap too. Some of us have bagged yotes as targets of opportunity. They do move during daylight. We have also called them in during the daytime too. Also, they can be baited legally as well. My point is, to just get started predator hunting, or to just go out now and then, it doesn't need to be super expensive. And if you want to go at night, a good red light set up can be used successfully with an illuminated reticle scope. Nope, nowhere near as good, or cool as IR or Thermal, but it does work! And at a fraction of the cost. And still fun!!! I too picked up an AR last year for similar reasons as you. Just wanted one! And I have a nice scope on it that is pretty darn accurate out to 200 yards. Also have a pretty good E-Caller, and a variety of mouth calls that I practice with and use. And have a couple different lights to use, that will shine farther than I am willing to shoot. All for a bit over $1000 total! We have a blast, day or night! Isn't that what it's all about anyways? -

Coyotes can be hunted, called, and killed during daylight hours too. And with a deer rifle you already have. -
I'm all in for the new DEC plan!! Long overdue. Take back the common sense role of deer management, from know nothing, big city politicians.

Been awhile since I checked in to this thread. My quest to shoot a certain mature buck has not worked out yet. No shots taken. I have seen deer most every sit though. And passed a couple two year old bucks, that I may, or may not regret shooting?....lol It has so far been a challenge, but I am enjoying the zig and zag games we are playing, and the all or nothing, of hunting a particular deer or two for the first time ever. As I get older, I have been wanting to do this. Sooo, we have two very nice mature bucks on the property. And decided this is the year. They are winning so far. But I'm cool with that. Still have a couple weekends to hunt. Perhaps I'll get lucky? Perhaps I'll lower my standards? Perhaps I'll stick to my standards, and end up with a tag in my pocket for the first time in many years? Who knows? But I am enjoying the season and the chase so far! I may even try to go back into the Pine Bush with my bow, to see if I can get redemption on that buck, that I had a close encounter with a few weeks ago? It's all good! I'm living my motto of "Shoot what you like. Like what you shoot". Congratulations to all of you who have gotten deer down! Every one of em is a trophy!!!- 8220 replies

Took the day off yesterday, back at em again this morning. I've been seeing deer most every sit! But just not the ones I've been hoping to see. Maybe it's time to be less selective? IDK? Best of luck to all heading out! Nice buck Savagehunter! Congratulations! -

Have a couple things that need to be done here at home this morning. Then will head up to the farm around noon. Will hunt the bedding area cut, where yesterday, I saw 13 different flatheads. But not one buck? Kinda strange I thought. But plenty of buck sign around to keep me going back. Good luck to all hunting today! Congratulations to all who got it done yesterday! You all did great! Especially Turkey feathers, tree guy's dad, and Zeek!!!!
