Congratulations to all who got it done today!! Some fine looking bucks and doe's!!! Very quiet day for me. Saw two deer all day. Very few shots close by, so I'm probably not the only one locally to have a slow day? Little less wind tomorrow, and from a different direction. So maybe things will pick up? We'll see. -
Congratulations! Nice buck!

I hope to see you in a picture with him Jay!!! It would blow this forum to smithereens! Good luck buddy. -
Looks to be a great bow Brian! I know it will shoot great in your hands!

I think you have a very sound plan Brian, stick with it. Good luck. My spot tomorrow, will be a very thick bedding area that we made a cut into last year. During gun season, I've found that hunting the thicker areas as opposed to open areas, is much more productive.

I'd rather walk in the woods naked with the temps in the teens, than run out of ammo! That'd be a definite short coming!.... If I get low on hunting ammo, I make more.

Welcome!! So glad to have you finally join us! You are obviously getting the hang of this hunting thing, with a deer under your belt already! Awesome, congratulations! Where were you to play football? What area of the capital district are you hunting? Wishing you best of luck for the remainder of hunting season! Keep safe! Oh....I bet your grandfather will be so happy to spend a little outdoors time with you too!

I feel good dogs relate to us much better than most humans. So sad when we have to say goodbye. Remmi will be waiting for you all, tail wagging, over the rainbow bridge.

It hurts bad to lose one Larry. Believe me I know. It was my main reason for joining Deer Search in 1998 and becoming certified through NYS. So hard to tell from pictures sometimes. As in a couple of the pictures the blood looks dark. And in another it almost appears to be watery and light colored? My guess, and that's all it is, based on what you described and the pictures, is likely a kidney/front of gut/liver hit, just slightly back a little from the lungs, but vertically good? There is a lot of internal fat in these areas, that tend to plug up the holes leaving a very spotty blood trail most times. "Usually" with this type of hit they will bed down fairly quickly, and if left alone, you will find them in the first bed. Strange that this one never bedded?? Thanks for sharing your story my friend. As It gives us all a little bit more info to pull from, when something out of the norm happens. This is the worst part of what we do as hunters. We never want it to happen, but if you hunt long enough it likely will. It truly does hurt. All we can do is try to learn something from it. Move on, and strive to always be better. And even at our best, stuff just happens sometimes. Just the way it is. Wishing you nothing but good luck, for the remainder of the season sir.

I'm going back to where we cut a path last year between bedding areas. We put the blind up three weeks ago. And when we were finished popping out the blind, hammering steaks, and were standing there talking, a shooter buck just walked across the cut! I shot a nice buck there last year. And a few days later, sitting in there with my grandson, we saw a buck that made mine look small!

You guys with Centerpoint 370 what bolts are u using
grampy replied to luberhill's topic in CrossBow Hunting
I've been using the Victory Archery bolts with lighted nocks already installed from my Sniper 370. They work great! -
If there were ever a "perfect" deer round. The 7mm-08 would certainly be near the top of the list!

OK....Just settle down a bit. All you are feeling is the pre-opening day jitters! That condition has been around longer than I've been hunting! Heck, I still get em!! What stand? Where are the deer? Will I see any here? Where are other hunters? I've scouted here, and seen a ton of deer sign but no deer?? I haven't scouted there, but there always seems to be deer? I saw a big one from this spot while bowhunting? Joe says to go here or there? I killed one there five years ago! Just to name a few..... The pre-opening day jitters always have us guessing and thinking, where is THE BEST spot to go on opening day of deer season? No easy answer to that one. Seems like no matter where I decide to go, the deer go somewhere else! I have only killed a couple deer on opening day in 47 opening days! So it usually takes me a few days to sort through everything, as I'm not the best, or smartest hunter to stumble through the woods. But once I do, it usually works out just fine. I guess if I didn't get the opening day jitters, it would be time to hang up the ol' hunting hat. So enjoy them! I would take the climber only when you are well practiced, and familiar with it. Just pick a spot and go!!!

Welcome! And good luck to you too!

Do you guys spray down every time before going in
grampy replied to luberhill's topic in Deer Hunting
I think the point being made by a few (myself included). Is that realistically, there is nothing we can do to totally become scent free, where a deer down wind will not smell us. Proven fact. So the best way to hunt is to play the wind as much as possible. Of course, it does not make it worse, to use some type of scent control. But any deer, especially a mature buck down wind, will bust you more often than not, no matter what you do.... or don't do. Especially us ground hunters. And throw in changing wind directions and thermals, it does get a bit tricky at times, but that is hunting. I'm convinced that we never see some of the deer that scent us. Regardless of how much we do to prevent that from happening. I also believe that most successful hunters need to have a certain degree of confidence. And if using any type of scent control, gives the hunter a little added confidence, then that is never a bad thing, or a waste of time. Do whatever works best for YOU the hunter! -
Thoughts and prayers sent, to have you and your wife feel better very soon.
