I'm going back to where we cut a path last year between bedding areas. We put the blind up three weeks ago. And when we were finished popping out the blind, hammering steaks, and were standing there talking, a shooter buck just walked across the cut! I shot a nice buck there last year. And a few days later, sitting in there with my grandson, we saw a buck that made mine look small!

You guys with Centerpoint 370 what bolts are u using
grampy replied to luberhill's topic in CrossBow Hunting
I've been using the Victory Archery bolts with lighted nocks already installed from my Sniper 370. They work great! -
If there were ever a "perfect" deer round. The 7mm-08 would certainly be near the top of the list!

OK....Just settle down a bit. All you are feeling is the pre-opening day jitters! That condition has been around longer than I've been hunting! Heck, I still get em!! What stand? Where are the deer? Will I see any here? Where are other hunters? I've scouted here, and seen a ton of deer sign but no deer?? I haven't scouted there, but there always seems to be deer? I saw a big one from this spot while bowhunting? Joe says to go here or there? I killed one there five years ago! Just to name a few..... The pre-opening day jitters always have us guessing and thinking, where is THE BEST spot to go on opening day of deer season? No easy answer to that one. Seems like no matter where I decide to go, the deer go somewhere else! I have only killed a couple deer on opening day in 47 opening days! So it usually takes me a few days to sort through everything, as I'm not the best, or smartest hunter to stumble through the woods. But once I do, it usually works out just fine. I guess if I didn't get the opening day jitters, it would be time to hang up the ol' hunting hat. So enjoy them! I would take the climber only when you are well practiced, and familiar with it. Just pick a spot and go!!!

Welcome! And good luck to you too!

Do you guys spray down every time before going in
grampy replied to luberhill's topic in Deer Hunting
I think the point being made by a few (myself included). Is that realistically, there is nothing we can do to totally become scent free, where a deer down wind will not smell us. Proven fact. So the best way to hunt is to play the wind as much as possible. Of course, it does not make it worse, to use some type of scent control. But any deer, especially a mature buck down wind, will bust you more often than not, no matter what you do.... or don't do. Especially us ground hunters. And throw in changing wind directions and thermals, it does get a bit tricky at times, but that is hunting. I'm convinced that we never see some of the deer that scent us. Regardless of how much we do to prevent that from happening. I also believe that most successful hunters need to have a certain degree of confidence. And if using any type of scent control, gives the hunter a little added confidence, then that is never a bad thing, or a waste of time. Do whatever works best for YOU the hunter! -
Thoughts and prayers sent, to have you and your wife feel better very soon.

Great news!!

With each deer I kill with the Nosler BTs I become more impressed Dan. And getting confirmation from someone with your experience doesn't hurt either.

Sako 85 Classic in 270, shooting my hand loads with 140g Nosler BTs, propelled by 59.5 grains of H4831 at about 3000fps Topped with a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40. It has dropped every deer it ever shot at. Even a couple from it's first owner moog.

Do you guys spray down every time before going in
grampy replied to luberhill's topic in Deer Hunting
If I go to the Mobil in East Berne to get a coffee and a breakfast sandwich, I may spray the bottom of my boots before heading back in? If I remember. Been a lot of times when I had to put down my smoke before shooting a deer though. Then calmly pick it back up after the shot and grin. -

Congratulations CabinFever!!! Awesome buck! And the double too! -
Happy Birthday !!

Pin is bright with no clutter like you say. I didn't move mine for years! Just got used to aiming a touch higher for longer shots. With your arrow speeds, you won't need to adjust near as much as I did. I think it will be a good fit for ya buddy.

I used HHA on my old bow for years and loved it! Has everything you mentioned on your wish list too. I set mine at 20 yards and was good to 30 just aimed a touch higher. Never had an issue with it.

Ever shot any sitting on the ground with a crossbow
grampy replied to luberhill's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Just put your back to a big wide tree. Or find a blow down and get in there. A large rock, or throw together some stuff found lying on the ground to make a blind. I've killed a bunch of deer from the ground with my bow. Crossbow is even a little less difficult. -

I've done it three times. Is there any other way but from the ground? -

Total of 8 bucks seen today. Two closest were five yards from my ground blind. But none were shooters for me. Lots of cruising and chasing. Got to see a couple bucks fighting, and watched another go to town making a rub. Great day in the woods!- 8220 replies

Congratulations to Jerkman and Tughill Tamer!!!! Great bucks guys! -
Just like most lands, you need to know where the bedding and feeding areas are. Then try to set up in between them. That's as basic as you can get. Lots of variables to go with that. But not being able to scout at all and just looking at a map, makes it a crap shoot at best. But once you get in there, perhaps you'll find some fresh deer sign to set up on? But just using what you gave us, I'd pick #4 as you have the creek bottom and a little bit of elevation. Deer like edges, always remember that. Looks like a bit of a pinch point there? Good luck, hope you guys get one out of there!
