  1. I don't even have a sling. I have yet to drop my gun except when I was basically standing in front of my car. I did experiment with a sling one day but it caught constantly on the capless turrets on the gun I was using (I don't use capless now for hunting). I will say I have a backpack with me 100% of the time and it is capable of strapping in a gun, so if I need both hands free I can just throw it onto that. If my pack couldn't do that I would have a sling, but the pack also does it with bow.
  2. Was just at field & stream in henrietta and 50% off signs everywhere. This is on the legit stuff, not junk nobody ever wanted or buys. And 50% honest to goodness off. The only problem is at the end of hunting season I already had everything, so I had to leave empty handed, but the racks were still full, with lots of selection, lots of sizes. If you need some new pants, jacket, gloves, whatever, it's all 50% off.
  3. Of if you have to take the course, do the online one from PA. They will give you a laminated card and all states have reciprocity. I had to do that when I started last year because all the NY classes were full. I literally was forced to go that route. Managed to get an in-person for bow, though.
  4. People are slobs. Still pisses me off when somebody throws a cig butt out of their car.
  5. Myself and a buddy are in need of land to lease in Western Wayne county (i.e. Walworth, marion, ontario, east Penfield area). It has to be in this vicinity unless it's spectacularly good or cheap; we want to keep driving very reasonable during next year's season. Open to getting land ourselves or joining a group already leasing a large lot. Note: If you're reading this I am still most likely looking for land, even if I posted it months ago!
  6. No surprise at all this guy was a recent asylum seeker and apparently he was arrested earlier this year for forged papers but let go. Germany is doing absolutely everything right to encourage more of these attacks. I do feel bad for the people in Germany with a clue who, at least for now, are not numerous enough to force a change in course. Merkel should damn near be imprisoned for her leadership in the past couple of years.
  7. You can get a lot of aftermarket caps on amazon. I've been thinking about it, but I Just leave the caps off while I'm out, so it's one less thing to worry about right now. --- Took this to the range again today after dropping it and destroying my zero. Once I got it re-zeroed I still can't believe how accurate this rifle is. My groups with 120 Gr and XTP hunter are several inches, but with the 250 gr shockwave and a 120 gr load of 777 pellets it really does approx an inch or not much more pretty consistently. Two more rounds today 1/2" apart, but a couple inches off bullseye. Adjusted scope for my final shot and another one that overlapped the green in the middle. This gun really is a tack driver. I bet it would do better from a sled.
  8. I would support a longer hunting season but maybe even reduce DMPs. Personally I'd take an extra two weeks of gun season if I could only get one DMP instead of two, for example. Other states have longer seasons and don't we supposedly have a deer overpopulation issue? Although, it could be a blessing by the state that the more obsessive among us are not "getting in a quick hunt" on christmas eve or christmas day, leaving the family at home
  9. condolences on the range finder. About 1% of my walked miles this season are on blacktop or less. And I only ever dropped my gun once all season. Guess when I dropped it. Yep, finished my last hunt of the season by dropping my new gun and scope thirty feet from the car onto blacktop. Busted s cap scratched the scope (not lens) and knocked off zero. Hopefully that is full extent of damage! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. This is a generic question. Not terribly meaningful since the bulk of illegals are going nowhere and nobody has ever thought they would be all be expelled. More interesting is support levels for ejecting illegals who are also convicted of additional crimes and I bet support for that is much higher.
  11. Just like Nice, at this point 9 reported dead at this point. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2016/12/19/report-truck-drives-into-crowded-christmas-market-in-berlin.html Can Europe change course? I highly doubt it. I think the continent is lost. Political correctness demands a sacrifice and not enough has yet been sacrificed.
  12. He is one of the good ones. So many great clips of him dropping truth bombs.
  13. This is also why I'm calling it. I went out this morning to the best part of the state land I know of the parcel I visit (not including a section that's virtually impossible to get through due to where it is--requires a ridiculous walk). I saw at most one track and it was a good day old. Could hardly believe it really, even a week ago it showed more sign than that, and two weeks ago more still, but it's been totally, absolutely tapped out. This is a large area next to water and food. However, I found gobs and gobs of fresh tracks next to this land in private, thus confirming my fears. This private land is hunted, but not hard (I hunt the public enough to know how many people hit the private), so that's where the deer are. I live in a kind of bad part of the state for public land. Anything inside of an hour is very small and has to support a huge population area of hunters, relatively speaking.
  14. I went this morning. I had planned on tomorrow as well but day old snow confirms my fears: The public land is totally, thoroughly dead. I went to the best parts of the section and I can't find jack squat, but tons of tracks leading off into private, so I'm throwing in the towel now. As for post-season I need to retile our master bath, so I plan on starting that this christmas break.
  15. Yikes. http://www.whec.com/news/hunter-arrested-after-shooting-into-residential-home/4348123/?cat=565
  16. Some of their boots are quite inexpensive on amazon. I really like the full height rubber. That's my only complaint with the fieldblazer ii. The thorns rip the uppers, basically necessitating the use of gaiters unless very careful.
  17. This is an amazingly snazzy thread. I never thought so many awesome pics from a pile of guts. If I ever snag a deer close enough to the car and remember I am definitely going to drop a cam. I also didn't know NY had bald eagles. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/74052.html
  18. Took this out hunting a half dozen times since MZ started and wanted to be sure everything was still good and the propellant was sound etc, so I took it to the range today intent to see what a single shot would do at 100 yards and here it is. I have never hit the bullseye first shot in any gun. Suffice to say a clean-bore shot like this is confidence boosting. I have been keeping electrical tape over the muzzle to protect against weather, and as soon as I get home I put this in the garage. 4*30 777 pellets + 250 gr t/c shockwave
  19. I went through this recently and I'm totally sold on the high swamp-type boots like mucks or lacrosse. Tucking pants in, not worrying about the first foot of water is excellent. I opted for fairly light insulation ones (5mm insulation--they don't rate in grams) and with wool socks they are nice down to a bit below freezing. Down to 20 they are fine with wool socks as long as I also put some of those little foot warmers in too (not hand warmers--foot warmers work better in low-oxygen of boot). This way I get warm feet even on very cold days but don't have to lug around a ton of extra weight. Really dislike some of the really big, heavy boots. I'd look into the lacrosse aeroform or mucks fieldblazer ii, both fairly responsive agile boots.
  20. Penfield target right this minute. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Target in Penfield does. Has a freezer/fridge section in its grocery aisles.
  22. I find the most I can tolerate is a t-shirt plus a fleece jacket if I'm moving at all. If I have more than that I am sweating like a pig by the time I get to the stand, so I always carry my heavy jacket in my backpack. Adds a ton of bulk but I can't think of a better approach.
  23. Getting real antsy here on the couch, but it's still snowing. I can't do a 40 min drive next to the lake in this, but it is supposed to let up a bit for a few hours before rain kicks in mid afternoon. Not a great time to hunt mid-day but maybe deer will use the window to move around, so I'm hoping to get out still...
  24. Too far back, which is why they say only broadside or quartering away with bow.
