    The End

I just literally laughed out loud when I read this. I don't think any kid with a bow didn't do this. I remember shooting one and it landing on the garage with my dad inside. I can remember him coming out and asking what the hell is wrong with me? haha I just wanted to see how far I could shoot it in the air. He shakes his head tells me not to do it anymore then I proceed to go in the fresh cut field out back behind the house and continue to do it. But instead for for distance.
  2. So we have this nice hunting shack all heated and everything anyone have any recommendations to keep a 2 year old occupied for a couple hours? My plan is to shoot the first doe that walks out so he can get into the experience. He loves watching deer on the camera and always ask to go. I have a tablet for him I'm going to bring and cram as many quieter toys as possible into my bag. Any recommendations are welcome. He has been able to sit for 2 hours at max then back to the house.
  3. I'll be out tonight for my last horrah, I might just hang a new set instead. I have a nice little spot picked out for a double stand. My archery season has been pretty sad, no real opportunities I could capitalize on. I whiffed one shot on a doe that ducked the shot I could not believe it. Never had that happen, it certainly won't happen tomorrow. I hope to get my son in the stand with me next week over thanksgiving vacation. Hopefully this time he can sit for a couple hours till dark maybe a morning hunt would be better.
  4. I wish they discounted the bow and muzzleloader when you bought them for the little ones. My oldest 2 years 10 months has his lifetime courtesy of his great grandfather I wasn't expecting him to do that it was a great surprise. No doubt you will figure out real quick if they are into hunting my 2 year old loves every second of hunting videos, walking around the woods putting up cameras the whole shabang. That is all my oldest talks about. My youngest is 9 months and his great grandfather said he is buying his, and likes watching hunting shows too. I'm going to go broke buying them all their gear and guns.
  5. Wife's Remington 770 .243 because it is a synthetic and light. Not to mention I don't need to shoot more than 75 yards not that I would limit the gun or myself to that distance. I just like carrying it because of the shorter barrel and it's light. She always harasses me because I take it more than I do my .270 or any other gun for that matter. It's just a fun gun.
  6. The another year it poured on OD was 2005 or 2004 I think I sat in the tree stand no umbrella or anything and was soaked after 3 hours I had to go in and my clothes felt like they were 100lbs.
  7. They have much more public land access than NY as well. I'm pretty sure the doe tag lottery is different for public than private lands. Either way managing the deer population with either sex tags is bad practice, and is a contributing factor to less densities all over the state. Being that their deer densities are higher it would be NY should be a 1 buck state at least until the numbers come up. Their terrain and habitat are similar to NY so we should be similar in deer densities being that we aren't there's something wrong with the way we manage our deer herds. There are about 100,000 less licenses sold in NY than WI so hunter density is a little less in NY. All things considered there should be more quality deer in NY if better managed. EDIT: I do want to say that WI does have an 8 day gun season, just putting that out there.
  8. Only reason why mature bucks travel is for a hot doe. Otherwise they stick to where it is safe, they didn't get big by being dumb. Higher doe populations will keep those big bucks in an area BUT those same higher populations make it so they don't have to move as much during daylight hours. The old saying about a young bull and old bull comes to mind. It's a double edged sword. We have higher doe population at my father's property and see the same usual bucks. Here on my property I have had 7 or 8 different bucks on my camera over the last week. 3 I had all season the rest all new. Not a bad thing except they are going past my stand at night!
  9. Must not have read their regs right I thought it was 1 buck for archery or gun.
  10. Somebody shoot something so I know what deer look like for tomorrow. Been down on my luck lately and haven't seen a deer in a while.
  11. @steve863 They shouldn't have any either sex permits and put those into the DMP lottery. That is the only way to properly manage the number of doe in the state.
  12. I will tell you I hunt the southern tier of NY border about 15 miles as a crows flys I see and have seen more mature deer in PA than NY. They may not be a trophy state but as mentioned earlier they went at it the wrong way. You can place blame on whoever you want but they screwed up in PA. Now that there is so much more research and long term results there is no reason they can't adapt a more feasible deer management plan in NY. If you want to compare apples to apples then take Wisconsin and Ohio and compare their management plans to NY. They are closest in terrain, weather, and habitat. In the southern 15 miles of NY there is less ag forage but still has plenty of forage comparing to Ohio and Wisconsin. Both of which are known for quality whitetails. Have you ever hunted Ohio or other states to compare? We could use Minnesota but they have a shorter ag growing season and just as much if not less ag available in that state. There are trophy buck states that compare to NY don't bury your head in the sand. Minnesota and Wisconsin have one buck rules and really restrict the take of doe in certain areas. I think NY could benefit from a lot of things hunting wise but they won't listen to hunters, the one opinion that should matter.
  13. I have but generally will take a knee in the field for a rest. If it is a quick hip shot it usually isn't more than 30 yards and in the harwoods you have to pick your shots carefully. I don't hunt fields very often.
  14. I don't think baiting will ever be legal in NY it is too much of gamble with CWD and other diseases. Being that NY had one case of CWD a few years ago.
  15. Yes and it usually takes place near bedding areas more than grazing areas.
  16. Yeah I have done it and if it is a complete downpour I have never saw any deer. Being it is rut I think some deer will be up and moving if they don't already have a doe on lockdown. I plan on sitting until I'm soaked coming in drying my clothes and warming up next to the wood stove. Once I get some grub and clothes are dry I'm heading back out. I'll take my tree umbrella and probably put it up but doubt it will help much if there is a driving rain. I will be putting a little piece of electrical tape over my barrel to keep the rain out. As for the tip, Don't eat yellow snow.
  17. Yup old and on the downhill slope, I'm in at 6.5. She is old and bet she will make great burger.
  18. You're kidding right? Between our property and our neighbors we all practice AR and have had some really nice bucks come off the 400 acres total that we all practice AR. Each year on our property alone we have 2 or 3 "shooter" bucks in the 130"+ range not to mention the handful of 100"-110" bucks then a few smaller 1.5 and 2.5 year olds. Every year either on my property or the neighbors we harvest 4.5 year old or older deer. Let me know when you find credible information stating AR don't work.
  19. X2. Honestly would it be so bad as to allow hunting on weekends and a few days during the week. Not many people can make it out during the week unless they live on the property they hunt. You could even say no hunting on the off days no matter the implement. I think you would see more deer with the less pressure. I think PA does something like this with their doe season or bucks only. Maybe that was the old way or something before the ARs not entirely sure. DEC should sit down with all involved parties minus the insurance companies and look at all the other states that have healthy populations of deer. A few I can think of is Ohio, Illinois, Wyoming, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota. Compare their seasons and how they coincide with the rut then look at the terrain and agriculture for the areas. They could take the best practice from each and have a healthy and manageable deer herd. What they do now is kind of a fly by the seat of your pants management more reactive than proactive.
  20. Yeah I can't figure out why your guys season is so long. I would like to see all of NY go to the same season dates but do an early muzzleloader like the northern zone instead of regular season first. Almost like going from most limited implement to least limited. Start with bow then crossbow muzzleloader then regular season. It makes the most sense but we all know how far common sense will get you when talking politics.
  21. That is a true stud! congrats on the giant.
  22. Sad part is there are people that pass doe that are bigger than the 4 point they shoot because they are meat hunters. I always get a good chuckle out of their justification of shooting a 4 point or smaller buck.
  23. If I took a break my property would be over run with trespassers. After the first 2 weeks I only go out and sit to keep people off my property. Pretty sad but true. No presence in the woods basically gives all the local scum bags free reign. I would like to see a shortened season and 1 buck rule if they aren't going to do statewide ARs.
