  1. Here is a link to all proposed regs. http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/propregulations.html
  2. Well said. I am the same way I want to hunt the biggest, and smartest deer in the woods. I want the challenge, I like setting goals even if they are so far fetched they are seem unreacheable by others but they are MY goals. I don't expect everyone to set the same goals some people don't like to challenge themselves and just go out to shoot something or everything they can get a shot at. I'm not that way never have been, I have friends that are brown it's down hunters and I befriend them because of it I just don't hunt with them. Bow season is my season, I love it! I can see a good amount of deer not usually spooked in their natural habitat acting "normal". I love to just sit and watch as my adrenaline starts to surge through my veins even knowing that I'm not going to pick up my bow. It still gets me going, I can't get enough of that feeling. Same goes for fishing I want that biggest smartest fish and every fish that hits my lure/bait gets me going in that same way that little doe did. Its all about enjoying yourself. I would love to see my brown it's down friends pass those 1 1/2 year old deer bucks or doe and they would have much more deer in their property but they don't so they don't see much. 6 deer on a 300 acres tract of land is pretty dismal.
  3. The last time any of us were out on our property was thanksgiving weekend. At that point I didn't see a deer for 3 days of hunting. I hope things have calmed down a bit. I have been saving this one stand in our thick swamp it is a bit of an oasis for the deer so I'm not sure if I'm going to hunt it. I don't want to push the 130" 8 point off the property where I know he is safe.
  4. When my father took his hunting course many years ago I think it was Sodus Rod and Gun or Lyons Rod and Gunit was mandatory to shoot a .22LR open sights at 15 yards and out of 10 shots 5 must be within a 3" circle this was shooting off a bench/rest. You didn't get your certificate until you did the shooting test. There was also a lot more hands on firearm demonstration as well. I don't think it would really be that hard to incorporate some real life scenarios and handling of a firearm. Maybe the DEC can donate or buy some of the dummy pistols and long guns. When I took my course about 18 years ago they had a dummy pistol with a pressure sensitive laser they passed around it was crazy how many people when handling it lasered people around them . The instructor didn't mention why he handed it out then after asked how many people were hit with the laser. Almost everyone's hand went in the air he said if that were a real pistol we all could have been accidentally shot. I can still remember the expressions on peoples faces. A little bit of a scare tactic but I think it would open a lot of peoples eyes as to how clumsy some can be. I didn't need to pass a shooting test and it was held at the Lyons R&G I understand if places aren't available to shoot but I think most if not all R&G clubs would allow those looking to get their certificate to come and shoot for an afternoon without a membership but a signed waiver.
  5. Right but allowing that regular season tag to either sex isn't good management in areas that don't give out doe permits.
  6. Post of the year! Hahaha!
  7. Not sure I agree with that, my wife had a situation where I don't think in either case a rifle or shotgun would have been less deadly. Sitting in a tree stand with bullets of any size whistling through the tree tops above your head is enough for someone to get a little sense knocked into them. In my wife's case shooting any gun over a hill top is idiotic and you deserve to be tried for attempted murder or similar. Accidents happen but I'm sorry 100% of hunting accidents can be avoided if you properly handle a firearm. Negligence is not an argument.
  8. Right but 20% is the lowest take and could be a higher percentage. Just think if you killed all the deer that were bred then you would have no new fawns the following year then did the same. The 20 deer would become 5 deer in a matter of 2 years. Most definitely bad management tactics. Think of the areas that you count deer sightings by the number per a week instead number per a sit or worse per a day,
  9. Or a donkey, those things are vicious when protecting livestock. Not sure of the breed of donkey but there is one that was used to protect livestock from coyotes and it would actually kill them. Here is an article I saw. This one was in South Carolina. I would imagine same would go for any domestic dog too. http://www.wideopenspaces.com/buck-donkey-doesnt-take-crap-coyotes/
  10. That was my thought, I am surprised the dog didn't tear into that Roo though. The dog looked like a mastif of some sort, not a small dog my any means. They used to shoot Roo because of over population with no season. It looks like the guy wasn't trying to hurt the animal just give a lesson. Like mentioned I wouldn't want to take a right hook from that guy.
  11. Yes I have, but no where in the article it says the guy was small game hunting. It sounds like the the dogs were running deer and the land owner got sick of it. Too many people think because they live in the country their dogs have free reign on everyone's property. I don't agree with that and if my dogs didn't make it home one day because someone shot them then that would be on me. I don't think there are big enough fines for those that just let their dogs roam freely on others property.
  12. Hold up I must have missed something, Doewhacker you said you would shoot someone over a dog? You would willing spend the next 10 years in jail over a dog? Really? I'm sorry but that is insane. That's like people saying they would shoot in the direction of a trespasser to warn them. Both equally as dumb.
  13. I only filled one doe tag just to have a little meat in the freezer, need one more or a nice buck. Time will tell.
  14. Debone all the way, I hate biting into a piece of meat and having grit of bone. Enough to make me spit the meat out.
  15. Same. Personally if my dogs were running deer and someone shot them I would be upset but knowing that my dogs were doing something illegal and I was also at fault for not keeping my dogs under control. I take responsibility for my animals and their behavior they are domestic animals not meant to run free. I feel if you think you can do that and something happens to your animal the owner is the one to blame. The owner in this instance is also to blame obviously he can't control other people and should have been dealt with a different way. I understand if they slipped a collar once but 2nd time is the owners fault. With that being said my dogs are dogs not family I have no blood relation to my dogs. I see them as a tool to my existence when they hunt with me. Do I love my dogs? most definitely and take care of them as best as I can, but they are not family members. If I had to choose between my wife or son over my dogs that would be a no brainer, son then the dogs! But in all seriousness if you could choose a dog over a son, daughter or wife you need to have your head examined.
  16. That and don't push your property. I don't have high fence or any fence for that matter but still have deer moving around during daylight hours although they are a little on nerve also see on average 8-10 different deer per a sit.
  17. Nice deer, I'll post up the cookbook I use. No special meat flavoring just fresh ingredients and good recipes. I made a nice casserole the other night pretty easy and didn't take long. Only reason I try different recipes is because meatloaf monday gets old all winter.
  18. I don't think you'll need to look hard.
  19. Going to try late ML with my bow, don't have ML powder right now.
  20. I have always said, "it's not about the deer but the hunt." God speed with your recovery.
  21. 2 things that help the meat tremendously when you killed a old deer. First the rear hocks cut them off in the field and throw them into a baggy to use on your boots do not hang the deer with them attached for any length of time. Second hang the deer for 2 days without the hide and use one of those cheese cloth like game bags. This does 2 things, allows the meat to cool quicker and allows the moisture in the silver skin to escape. Once you remove that game bag the outer layer of the meat will be hard. Using a scimitar style knife I prefer one around 10" trim off the harden layer of meat. You will loose a slight amount but the idea is to almost filet it from the deer. Once you are done with that use the back straps for small steaks/chops. The part of the hind quarters closest to the back straps make into either roasts or steaks as well these are known as sirloin tip steaks or roasts. Use the remainder of the hind quarters for rump roast the lower rear hind quarters, front shoulders, and neck should be ground into some sort of burger those will be your toughest cuts of meat and usually filled with silver skin giving you a very gamey taste and show leather like meat. Here is an attached picture incase you aren't following the terms/locations. If you follow my directions above that smell you talk about will be gone after 1 day and any rigor mortis will be gone by the end of the 2nd day so basically 48 hours. You can let it hang for a 3rd day if have good temps and the feet from the animal aren't stretched out all the way. I don't shoot deer if I can't hang them for 2 days in temps less than 48*, the other nice added thing of the game cloth is the flies can't get to the meat. If you truly believe I haven't shot a deer over 2 1/2 years old @Four Season Whitetails I think you need to come over to my property and help me harvest some of that liquid gold like you do for your deer. I must have shot a 160" 2 1/2 year old! Nothing but the best genes in my area apparently.
  22. Those green edamame things taste horrible. I have tried them boiled, steamed, and fried in bacon grease with salt and pepper and they still taste like crap. I would rather sit and eat a can of dog food than those things.
  23. I didn't see this post, our family property is about 1/2 AG fields ~80 acres and our best bet for food plots are those fields. We have put several plots in for deer to just walk through them and to the AG fields. Best thing you can do is setup on their travel corridor or make your property their bedding area.
  24. I have cut small paths using a push mower and tall wheels through briars and deer love to travel it but only because it's surrounded by thick undergrowth.
  25. No doubt about that, kind of my point when I was comparing 8N to 8F. Have you had grass fed beef without getting grained heavy at the end? The beef tastes exactly the same as venison, I cut up a cow for our friends that was grass fed and my payment was 1 of the loins. I was a bit upset mostly disappointed after sitting down to eat it definitely not the same as a grain fed cow.
