Happy Birthday Belo - go get a birthday buck!

Bears are a wild card too. My neighbor shot a doe at last light during the late season a few years ago, and after helping him look, we decided to let her lay overnight. The next morning we found a crime scene. Followed the bloody drag trail in the snow and found where the bear stashed the remains. Was pretty much just a head, hide, and spine.

Great buck! Congrats, glad you found him!

Good advice, that happened to me three years ago. Was fortunate to recover the doe the next morning after a high lung hit. She went another 800 yards after I bumped her. I should have stayed put.

Watching the development of Josh Allen this year which is about all there is to talk about. No offense, hot and cold defense. Special teams? WTH was that FG attempt? I'm surprised that they're 2-3 on the season. Still a rabid Bills fan though. Just don't have much to crow about. I like Allen, but they could have had Mahomes last year.

Woke up this morning to find my archery targets messed with. It's a usual annual occurrence to have a little buck beat up my deer target, but this time this damn bear got my stuff. Knocked down and scattered the deer target, and bit it in the butt and neck. He clawed at the bear target and took a bite out of that too. We've had a few different bears on cam around the house this year. It's one of these, probably the younger one. The deer target is 20 yards from the back deck. its on Yogi, it's on, I've got a broadhead for you....

Got these a couple of years ago.

In the headline, they should replace "hunter" with "scumbag poacher". -
We'd love to see that video!

So did you all hear prince Andy’s newest excuse
Steuben Jerry replied to rob-c's topic in General Chit Chat
He's right though, the statewide population is increasing over the last 5-10 years. But most of the people coming in pay little taxes, while a lot of the people leaving are big tax contributors. That's a problem for funding democratic initiatives. Like free college. Students coming in to the state aren't paying taxes. But all of us existing taxpayers have to shoulder the increased tax load. -

I stop at Cabelas every trip too. Our daughter is 20 mins from there. If I am lucky enough to live 25 years after retirement, I calculate I'll save more than $400,000 on property taxes over that time, figuring the current rate plus just half of the historical annual increase. That's not an insignificant amount of dollars! And the better political climate, gun freedoms, and weather is the cherry on top. -
So whats a "shooter" buck.... For you.
Steuben Jerry replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Deer Hunting
Good thread, Rob! For me, I simply try to do a bit better than the previous buck if I can. I’ve been lucky enough that the last three bucks over five years have been progressively bigger. Those other two years I passed a few that were close in size because I was holding out for the big boy on the trailcam pics, but of course never saw him. So those years no buck, but I did take a doe or two. Never saw the passed bucks again those years – other local guys all dropped them early in the rifle season. I like having a good venny supply so I can’t say that I would keep passing if my freezer was empty near the end of the season. To be honest, if it was the closing days and I was deerless, the little four or six point gets whacked. I haven’t had to do that yet. DMP’s are difficult to get in our area, but I do get a landowner’s tag and have never had to make soup out of it. My buddy and neighbor whom I’ll affectionately call an antler snob has frowned on every buck I’ve taken since he found the antler religion about 15 years ago. To be fair, He’s shot the only two monsters in our area over that time. But he’s gone multiple years without deer in that pursuit. I’m not a meat hunter per say, but I don’t hunt deer to not shoot deer. Especially multiple years in a row. The buck in my avatar is my best to date and was from last year. I’m told I should’ve passed on him, think of how big next year, blah, blah, blah. No bigger bucks were taken last year that I know of, and the only larger racked buck that was spotted was missing most of his right antler. I get it. It’s all about the rack for some and I respect that. But while I’m interested (and who doesn’t want to shoot the local giant), It’s not the only thing for me about deer hunting. -

This should last at least until rifle season before it needs any topping off.

We have a married daughter and grandchildren in Rochester and a married daughter with a grandchild in Delaware. Low property tax in DE (but high housing costs) and zero sales tax. So I've lost half that reason to stay. Why can't NY learn from these other low cost states? They seem to have it figured out. -

I hear you. I really don't want to leave this state, but I can save $1300/month in property taxes compared to VA, NC, or TN. My retirement funding will let me retire in about two years if I move to one of those states compared to me still having to work ongoing to keep up with my tax bills. Part of me is pissed at myself for not finding a way to put away more in my youth to cover tax bills, and another part of me thinks, why would I have done that just to hand it over to the state? -

Yup! Saw that on TV when I was taking my first sip of coffee this morning and almost spit it out! Put my school tax checks in the mail on the way to work a little later and laughed again! Oh yeah, and he said "personal reasons". I have a personal reason - I personally think Cuomo is an a-hole.- 47 replies

Yup. It doesn't seem that long ago that the opener was the 15th instead of the 1st. They'll be there. Still seems Summer-ish for now. Monday is supposed to be 70 degrees by me. I took a doe around the third week of October last year and it was pretty warm out. Had to hustle to take care of it.
