  1. Not close - this dang economy on steroids has got me slammed at work. Still need to attend to tree stands and get some brush hogging done, let alone end of summer house and yard stuff. At this point, I'm shooting for the end of October, or the next week for Crossbow. I actually have 10/1 scheduled as vacation, but we'll see how that works out. I think I'll fool the local deer by having them think I'm not around this year, and then when they least expect it...
  2. This isn't shaping up to be my year. Haven't been able to spend any time getting ready. Out of practice, and the tree stands all need attention. I keep scheduling vacation days, and then keep cancelling them. I've only taken three vac days so far this year. Cancelled a trip I had planned for August. At this point I have Mon-Wed of Thanksgiving week off, probably won't be able to take much time before that. I need a change of luck!
  3. Came across this yesterday, definitely wasn't here last Sunday. Curious to what they are.
  4. Always impressed with your artistry Wooly - looks great!
  5. We went to Mystic a few years ago. Spent some time at the Mystic Seaport and shipbuilding village and enjoyed the visit. If you're into the historical or nautical stuff, this is a can't miss place to spend a few hours. https://www.mysticseaport.org/
  6. I’m just outside of Boston this evening for a meeting with a customer tomorrow morning. Was pleasantly surprised to find a Cabelas across from my hotel - honestly didn’t know it was there when I booked the hotel. Post shopping I’m having baked Cod with a Be Hoppy from Wormtown Brewery in “Wooster”.
  7. Going with the flow and saying coyote.
  8. Was going to say the same thing as Salmon Run. Especially that pic with the pile of chips on the ground.
  9. Good karma building right there. Good job!
  10. I've got a guy that's between Bath and Cameron, 20-ish minutes from Painted Post. I used him last year for the first time after my usual guy closed down his shop for good. He did a nice job, vacuum packed and quick turnaround. He did 5 deer for the group that hunted at our place and we were all happy with them. He caped two of them also. I don't want to post his contact info on the internet without his permission, so I just private messaged it to you. Good luck this year!
  11. I might buy one of those, but I'd have to add "LOL, just kidding" to the bottom of it. Or are they cheap enough to use for targets?
  12. Nope, disagree with the wisdom thing. But I'll say it takes more skill to shoot a good deer from the ground. No doubt on that. But by saying "wisdom", it makes it sound that one is stupid to hunt from an elevated stand.
  13. My wife shot a small buck on the regular season opener about 10 years ago that had gangrene. This was after a deer-drought of 4-5 years for her not getting any deer, so she was pretty happy. I had shot a doe the same day. So we had them hanging together in the garage overnight. The next day we dropped them off at a local processer. When we went to load them in the truck she asked "what is that smell". She has a nose like a bloodhound and I have a poor sense of smell. I blew it off and off to the processor we went. He called us later that evening and said hers had gangrene and he left it outside by his dumpster. I called the DEC to see about getting her a replacement tag. He said he'd have to check the deer out first. After many phone calls to check up on the situation, the local DEC guy took almost TWO WEEKS to get to the processor. Of course the deer was disposed of by then, so he said no replacement tag for her. I had to argue with him and the main office for a couple of days and they finally relented and admitted it was their fault for delaying their inspection. We finally got the replacement tag the last Friday of the season. The weather was crappy and she had pretty much slipped into holiday prep mode so she never hunted again after opening day that year. Needless to say, we were both pretty disappointed in the local DEC guy that year. He retired a year or so later, and we heard from a few folks he was a lazy old cuss who was pretty much retired on the job for his last few years. I met his replacement a year or so later who helped us with a trespasser problem and he was great. Responsive, energetic, and knowledgeable.
  14. I don't believe hunting from a tree stand makes you "un-wise". If you do it safely, what's the problem?
  15. There's a lot of ways to hunt from a stand safely. I've always been pretty shaky with heights. You'll never find me doing any roofing or chimney work - lol. Gave up hunting from a hang-on in my early 30's. I've got about a dozen 16 ft ladder stands and a 15 ft tower built on 6x6's. They're all stable and I wear a harness with all of them except the enclosed tower. I won't hunt a ladder stand without a harness. I never feel like I'm in danger of falling. I think one of the main issues with this guy is that he didn't seem to have anyone looking for him immediately after being overdue on the very first night. That wouldn't have prevented the predicament of falling in the first place, but it sure would cut short his 2 day ordeal. Hope he's 100% soon!
