They will kill a squirrel but you won't be able to shoot over 50 yds. and I would highly recommend a four power scope. You can actually see the bullet go looking through a scope and it is easier to sight in. I never shot them with open sights so not sure how accurate they would be.
-
You can also use cb .22 long rifle if you can find them and they are very quiet but you will still have to eject them manually. They are also slow but will do the job at short distances.
-
That is a completely different graph......If I counted all the shots I heard in succession as dead deer there wouldn't be a deer left in New York.

I am really going to have to be in the mood.
-
That doesn't mean the kill rate is up. It is only a reflection of the increase in the harvest reports. That just tells me that we are better at reporting not necessarily killing.

What a way to end my FINAL gun hunting season. A nice x-mas snow falling. Surprised to see four inches on the ground when I got home but wasn't surprised to see three deer jump in front of the truck on the way home. No tracks in the woods going in or coming out and did not hear a shot fired all afternoon. First season I have not even seen a single deer.
-
Do you by chance live in the basement?? IT IS THE LAST DAY OF GUN SEASON
-
You sure picked a lousy day to use a climber. One of the only days I haven't used mine

I have killed quite a few deer from this spot with the last one being a 148 lb. 6 point with a 15 1/2" spread. I don't hunt it much because it is so steep to get to. With the conditions and wind right I decided to give it a try. Takes a half hour to hike it pretty much straight up. Get to the spot were I normally sit and the tree is blown over. The wind picked up and I like to froze to death but I stuck it out til 10:00 and didn't see a thing. Heard a few shots but mostly they were the spray and pray type. Came home to warm up and grab a bite. With not much optimism I will give it one more try for the final time an be able to say I spent my time and gave my best. Good luck to anyone else going out the rest of the day.
-
I have not seen a deer since gun season opened. I've covered some great areas and places I have killed deer in the past. As long as it is going to be my last one I figure I will stick it out to the end. There is ways tomorrow joy joy I will give the total run down after tomorrow. Good luck if you go out.

Another sit this afternoon with the same results...ZIPPO
-
Just got in from a morning hunt. Set up in a hardwoods strip between two sets of pines. Nothing all morning but squirrels all over the place. Only shots fired were between 6:55 & 7:20. Didn't have a fireball so I tried a cinnamon...that didn't work either. Heading back out in a little bit to watch the trees grow old.
-
You could be right...I have never seen it so can't say. When I have shot shorts from a long rifle I made sure the barrel was clean since the .22 caliber will foul up the barrel faster than anything. Had to clean it often when I shot the cb. 22's. Very dirty caliber. If you have a scope on you can actually watch the cb .22 go down range.

Believe it or not....mice
-
It's on my list but it has been to wet here to trap and I am spending entirely to much time deer hunting. The fields are just saturated with water.
-
Back out this afternoon. In this spot I can see three fields at once where and if they come out of the thick stuff or hardwoods. Didn't see hardly any (deer) tracks on the way in but plenty of coyote tracks. Pretty sad when you see more coyote tracks than deer tracks. IS IT OVER YET!!!

The "official" Measurements .223" - .22 Short, Long, Long Rifle .224" - .22 WMR, .222 Remington, .223 Remington, .22-250 Varminter, .223 WSSM My verniers are not the best. They read the .22 long rifle and .22 short as 0.21-.022. Also measures my .223 hornady v-max at 0.21 but then again I am not measuring the base that is in the shell
-
Both bullets are the same diameter 0.21" The shorts have a shorter casing and a shorter bullet.
-
You can shoot shorts but will have to manually eject after each shot. The shorts do not generate enough pressure to work the action and eject the shell.
-
Just got back...pretty breezy with a 16 degree windchill. Didn't see any deer but saw some tracks and heard a couple of shots. Things are looking up
-
Based on the forecast you may be able to walk on the ice in a few days. Hope you get him.
-
Anther sit this afternoon seeing absolutely nothing Snowing like a banshee but no deer!
-
Any hope of this passing? Our NY Gov will fight it!!
Steve D replied to Fletch's topic in General Chit Chat
That was my point.....and who knows what restrictions or limitations other states have. One would have to be a Philadelphia lawyer to be legal in every state. Then you also have the "right to defend" regulations which vary from state to state. If you commit a minor "violation" of another state's rules would you jeopardize your NY state privileges . Lot of questions to be answered if it passes....but I still hope it does. -
Did a morning sit then a spot & stalk back to the house. Didn't see a thing. No tracks, beds, or any sign. Started snowing pretty good about 7:45 Probably have an inch or so now and still coming.
