NYT: Deer Overpopulation Meets Its Match: Women Who Hunt
Rattler replied to left field's topic in Deer Hunting
We should be happy to increase our ranks no matter where it comes from. I have seen many women hunters in the field. Very few were hunting alone, but then again, very few women do much of anything alone. But if you look at the increase in the marketing of hunting apparel and even firearms for women, you will see a huge investment by big corporations catering to women. -

Take a look for yourself. Not my video, but accurate portrayal of it on a big buck.

I've seen it with my own eyes. How do you think yotes take out deer?
-
On the other hand, they will take on a healthy deer in deep snow, taking out it's hind legs to keep it from escaping, and disembowel it while it is still alive. Most other predators kill the prey before eating it.

My volunteer Fire Dept is in need of a slicer. It was discussed a few meetings ago and they're looking into getting one. They would certainly appreciate it.

I haven't seen it mentioned here, but the latest update I saw said the dogs were owned by the man who died. He was being attacked by his own dogs and tried to barricade himself in his own apartment when it happened.

This is the best argument for supporting a coyote hunting contest you have ever made. It obviously doesn't put them on any endangered list.

I never ride a motorcycle without a helmet, nor do I drive a car without wearing a seat belt. I do have concerns with the govt mandating these things though. How far are we willing to let them go with mandates? I understand the idea it keeps insurance rates down. So wouldn't making automobile passengers wear helmets lower insurance rates too? It was mandatory to wear a helmet racing my car on the drag strip. If I chose not to, I was not allowed to race. It was forced safety. If the govt mandated it for everyone on the road, would we agree with it or consider it govt overreach? BTW, govt mandated car airbags add at least $1000 to the price of your new car and they are not an option. That's one result of govt mandates. And you don't get a lower insurance rate for having them. I remember when car seats for children weren't mandated and when seat belts didn't need to be worn. Today many things are not up to you. "It's a free country". In reality, you're free to do whatever they let you do. And if you don't comply, you pay a fine. I would rather the people who cause the accidents be held accountable to a greater extent.

I was referring to seat belts and helmets.
-
I believe they should both be freedom of choice, not forced compliance. The point is, how far will they go with their mandates? After trespassers enter the woods, will they take it off?

And the hits just keep on coming...... https://riverreporter.com/stories/white-sulphur-springs-coyote-hunt-a-go,35670?fbclid=IwAR29oWycBHseNwQ34QB8m6TFNRAPgjuSxo1bPPNMC7U-_MeFRsgVhWbYuGs

How would you feel about a mandatory helmet law..... for automobiles? It's for your safety. If a guy is willing to trespass, do you think he will comply with an orange law?

If you guys would be so kind as to tolerate a little doubt in research, I would appreciate it. Research is a form of theory. You do it and publish your findings. You publish your findings so it can be peer reviewed. Peer review can support or reject your research based on many factors, from methodology to conclusions. I'm just questioning parts of the article that appear to be incorrect, and I've stated why I believe they are. Researchers have raised concerns that ideological homogeneity may lead to questionable research practices. This concern is grounded in research on confirmation bias, group polarization, motivated reasoning, and the tendency for these phenomena to be even more pronounced among the highly educated. It is much more prevalent today than it has ever been. So I'm saying I'm not buying it right now. Time will tell if it's correct or flawed. We shall see. As to the habitat where I live, it's mixed hardwood and farmland. We hunt both areas. Anyone who owns 50 or more acres can get DMP's. The question is, how many go unfilled? Deer and turkey numbers are definitely down and yote sightings and harvests are certainly up. Seems to be a cause and effect relationship to me, but some would argue. That's OK. Time will tell. If they're right, it won't matter. If I'm right, it will. I hope I'm not right.

I see a lot of demand for regulation and restriction of hunting based on "research" in their statement. A lot of verbage there, that need not be there, without a desire to control hunting in line with their research. That explains the research. Maybe because I've seen it before, but I can read between the lines and know what is being said with double speak. You trust them if you want to. I think healthy skepticism is needed whenever the government's purposes are beneficient. Like I said, too much of what I see in their "research" does not apply to what is going on in the field. Maybe those "local" areas they mention are not as small as they would have you believe. I sure as heck don't see them saying coyotes are helping to increase deer populations, though I bet they would love to say that if they could figure a way to do it. With more of my fellow local hunters failing to fill a deer tag every season, I'm skeptical. I look forward to a research counter point, if one is ever allowed to be publicly circulated wihout restriction. I know, I'm crazy, like any type of research has never been censored in this country. Power and control people, power and control.
