Contrary to popular belief, black bear are not that hard to kill if the shot is well placed. A .357 magnum revolver at close range will be adequate for the job with just about any bullet it normally uses. A regular jacketed soft point will produce more than enough energy and penetration to reach a black bear's vitals at that range. The concern here is, will it decide to attack you after you hit it and before it dies. It might do that even if it was hit well with a 12 gauge slug at close range. Oh it will soon be dead for sure. The question is, will it take you with it.

GET READY FOR SAFE ACT II
Rattler replied to Larry's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
You don't seem to realize the courts are not your friend. They will uphold all of this oppression until it gets taken to the SCOTUS. It took 30 years for the Washington D.C. gun ban to be ruled unconstitutional by the SCOTUS and many people were prosecuted for it in the years it was in effect. D.C. is still oppressing gun owners in violation of the ruling too. Politicians don't fear the courts, because they are not held accountable for violating court rulings. Politicians must be made to fear the electorate. Unless free citizens unite to defend all individual liberties, they will all be lost. -
Had that happen once. There was nothing there for at least 2 months. It showed up within the week. Just smiled at the guy and then started laughing. He got mad and told me to leave and I asked him, "Is there an 'OR ELSE' with that?" He walked away grumbling to himself. Nobody has any rights to any spot on public land and putting a blind there doesn't mean you get to hunt there in the morning. The first person in that spot in the morning has rights to it. Anyone showing up later has to move.

Rattler 2018 Whitetail Classic Entry
Rattler replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in 2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
Well, I'm on the board. Nice 8 point with good mass. Weighs 160 lbs field dressed. Only 12 inch spread, but the main beams are 18 inches long. -
It's a birth defect.
-
No, I just hunt by walking out my back door.
-
Delaware County in the Catskills.

It was a very good day. Dressed weight 160 pounds. Been hunting deer 48 seasons now. This year hunting alone, dragging it out and hanging it in the shed by myself. I guess at 63 years old, I'm not that old after all.

Who uses snow camo when there is snow on the ground
Rattler replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
I wear white coveralls and a white hoodie under that in the snow. I'm talking all white, not camo white. Still hunting and stalking deer while wearing it. I've had deer look my way when I moved, then disregard my presence after looking my way for a minute. I've easily gotten within 50 yards of many deer wearing it. I believe they cannot see me at all while wearing it in the snow. If a coyote can't see a hunter in white, deer surely can't. -
Afghanistan is different because their combatants are training to come over here and kill us. Better to kill them there, where we control the battle, then have them here killing us through terrorist attacks. As far as the youth goes, modern battles aren't fought like WWII battles. Foot soldiers are not as effective as air power and smart bombs.

Now that you mention it, I do recall bear guides will shoot at your bear after you do, if it doesn't drop right there, just to insure it's found dead when they have to track it. They would need a good rifle to do that. Maybe it was Salmon fishing guides I heard about. There is no doubt about the massive energy a 12 gauge slug provides at close range though.

Always cold!? What’s everyone wearing ?
Rattler replied to fadetoblack188's topic in General Hunting
Sweat wicking undershirt, boxers, PolarTec fleece base layer top and bottom, Merino Wool socks, Heavy turtleneck shirt, Camo hooded sweatshirt, Camo insulated coveralls, reversible camo/blaze vest, ball cap with a wool watch cap over that. I also wear good gloves and a camo bandana to keep my face warm. Plus a good pair of waterproof insulated hunting boots. Much is carried in my back pack on the way to the morning stand so I won't get sweaty. I put on the extra things as I need them. I feel the biggest problem is sweat. If you get sweaty, you will get cold later. -
I once shot a bear with a rifled bolt action 12 gauge slug gun. I used a sabot slug @ 75 yards. Perfect heart shot. The bear took one leap and went only 10 yards, where it hit the ground motionless. I've heard many Alaskan Grizzly guides like to use a 12 gauge pump shotgun with slugs for their defensive firearm when guiding bear hunters. It offers the most energy at close range, in a reliable handy arm, for the least expense.

Handgun as a primary hunting weapon.
Rattler replied to Nytracker's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I'd like to hunt with a Glock 20 Long Slide using good 10MM hunting rounds and a reflex sight. -
I think Hornady sells their "custom" line of .35 Rem for a little less than that. It's standard 200 grain round nose fodder.

I have a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington made in the early 1960's. I've killed a few deer with it. The .200 grain .35 caliber slug penetrates well and delivers plenty of energy in a deer, very seldom passing all the way through. That's what knocks them down. Even with only one bullet hole, the blood trails are good if they run, which I have not had happen more than twice. Neither went more than 50 yards. I used iron sights for years, but put a 2x Leupold on it a few years ago because my eyes need it now. It throws off the balance as little as possible because it's a small scope. I consider this to be a 200 yard rifle at the best, and usually take deer within 50 yards with it. BTW, these are called "brush guns" because they are handy to carry in thick brush and fast to the shoulder. They don't "shoot through" brush. No bullet will. If any bullet hits a twig, it will deflect, possibly missing the target. Even a .45-70 won't shoot through branches without possible deflection. It will surely put the wallop on a whitetail though, and a .444 Marlin is even more powerful with only a little less frontal area. But these rifle are bigger and heavier than a Marlin 336, so they aren't as fast in the brush or to the shoulder. The .30-30 has better ballistics on paper than a .35 Remington, and it costs less to shoot, but it has a different effect on a deer when it shoots one. It gets the job done, but I think the .35 drops them faster, seeming to dump more energy into the animal when it hits it. And the .35 Remington isn't a target shooting rifle so I don't need more than 10 rounds to get through a sight in session and the entire deer season. Besides, I stocked up on .35 Remington ammo over the years and reload the empties, so I have at least 200 rounds for it in my possession, enough to last the rest of my life. It also gives me more confidence than the .30-30 if I happen to have a black bear come by. Congrats on your new rifle. You made a good choice.

Leftists and Democrats know Americans will no longer vote for them, so they have to import their voters.
-
That was before the Democrat's slow brains realized illegals could enhance their voter base by millions, effectively insuring Democrats remain in power for decades. It's all about power and control, just like everything else they do.

Only a leftist could find a right to gay marriage in the 14th amendment, but not see the right to individual ownership of a firearm in the 2nd amendment. -

Considering how bad Cuomo is, and the horrors he's promised for his third term, election tampering is the only way I can believe he won. I cannot believe that many people in this state actually voted for their own demise. There aren't that many people on the public dole in the state. Clueless liberals and anti American Leftists should be the only votes he got, but do they outnumber the rest of us now? I think it's time to look into the actual logistics of elections. Can we trust the machines? Are illegals voting? Dead people? People voting more than once? Ballot stuffing? The longer a person is in power, the easier it is to organize and control the corruption. Either the system is as corrupt as Cuomo, or the majority of citizens in this state are idiots.
