Are you sure those are NY deer !!!!

We searched 4 hours this morning. Blood was still on the ground. Even after the rain. Good blood. We pushed the thickets 300 yards, until we were out of the park, and on to private property. (not posted).. Still good blood. Come across a house.... Land owner comes out, and tells us to leave. I wasn't even carrying a rifle. She just wanted us out. The orange hat scared her. I walk back to my truck. Drive around to the road where the house is on. I see blood on the pavement in the middle of the road. 2 big blobs of blood, and lost the trail. Deer search didn't have anyone in the area. While I feel terrible, I did my best to find this deer. I didn't even hunt today. Didn't carry a firearm. Thinking about it, it was a low hit in the brisket. No other explanation. Definitely a pass through shot. We found blood, hair & fat. I looked up to see if crows were feasting. Nothing....

Whatever could go wrong, went wrong. Nice doe comes in, 20 yards, bam, hit her hard, she jumped so high, I knew she was hit hard. She can't run, she walks off. Not even all that fast. By all rights, she shouldn't have even walked off. I go for the follow up shot, and the gun is jammed. Totally jammed. 2 rounds lodged in the chamber. I just got the gun back from Remington !!! And obviously it's no good. By the time I clear the chamber, the deer is now out of sight. There is blood. Every 5 feet or so. I follow the blood out of the big woods, and into the thickest mountain laurel ever. So thick, I got through about 20 feet of it. Face is getting all scratched up. I'm at last light. I have to back out. I talked to the park ranger, not much I can except go back in the morning. I have a call into deer search. All I can think off it was a low hit, because of the close distance. I'm sighted for 100 yards, this deer was no more than 20 yards. I'm obviously upset. The whole Remington thing sucks. I got my 1st deer with the rifle, so it's meaningful. Then the action broke, and Remington fixed it. But now that I lost a deer with it, there's not much I can do with the rifle. Maybe just make it a range gun. I'll be out all day looking for this doe.

I've seen fields of deer in 3M. Usually 1st day of the season, and last day of the season.
-
I believe this thread is over a year old when I started it. The dates seem to be wrong.
-
My problem is the 600 different options ?? What line is good for rifle season? 20 degrees outside. Also, I need a tall size. No one seems to have that.

Any reviews on Sitka gear ? I'm considering it.

The only way to hunt is into the wind, or get up in a stand. There is no other way to hide your scent from an animals nose. If you're up high, maybe your scent will blow over the top of a deer.

Ticks are killing all the Moose in Maine. The population is way down. 200,000 ticks per moose, too much blood & hair loose, the moose die.
-
I hunted out west. The 1st thing they do is remove the hide. But here, we leave it for the butcher. Why ???????????????????????

My ratchet strap broke when I was hauling my ATV. The webbing just failed. Don't trust your life with a cheap strap.
-
My general rule: if I'm not eating it, I'm not killing it. If I took that bear, I'd have to eat it, and mount it. Just personal ethics.......

1 dropped on my car, I thought I was bombed !

There are 2 deer on my property in Huntington. They come around every night around dusk, looking for food. During the day time, they bed somewhere else. One is skittish, the other is more brazen, and snorts at me. They let me get within 100-200 feet before they take off. I wouldn't hunt them. It would be like taking candy from a baby. I know they'll be there tonight at dusk, and tomorrow night. It's a sure thing. They don't like cars either. If they hear my car, or car door slam, they'll take off.

Anyone hunt with a Browning Automatic Rifle
the blur replied to eagle rider's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I have the BAR, and I have the Remmy 750. The BAR is definitely a finer piece. The remmy already gone back to the factory for jamming, and it still jams. The BAR never jams. Both are accurate to 100 yards. 2" I'm happy. Out to 200 yards, the groups open up wide. Very wide. I noticed the BAR will string when it gets hot. -
With all the negative public opinion on "Trophy Hunting"...
the blur replied to Fletch's topic in General Chit Chat
I'm against Elephant hunting, Lion Hunting, Rhino hunting, etc. These animals are limited in #'s. And most guys are looking for the trophy, rather than dinner. I was against Zebra hunting too. Now I think I changed my mind. They seem plenty full in herds, and 1 missing won't upset their hierarchy. Giraffes, I have no opinion on yet. -
Huntington is in Suffolk, but no one knows if the Suffolk hunting regulations are acceptable in Huntington. Or if you must dig up the Huntington regulations, which don't exist.
-
If you google horse meat. The USA rounds up all the wild horses, and export them to Canada & Mexico where it's legal, and acceptable to butcher them. But you can't butcher horses here.
-
I'm working in Europe for the summer; & the local butcher has horse meat. It is the leanest meat I have ever seen. No fat at all. Even less than venison. I didn't even know what it is, because they use the German name for horse meat. But it was so red, and so lean I had to ask what it was. I forget the German name, it was Pfred...... something, so I asked the butcher to translate it for me. He said, it's the finest tasting of all meats. Richer in vitamins than any other meat available. And it taste like beef.

Anything your grandmother told you doesn't apply. There were no ticks back then. These little buggers are spreading like wild fire. I grew up in the woods, never knew what a tick was. Now, I need an effective spray, and I'm loosing faith in Permethrin. Even in higher elevations where I generally don't see ticks, I had some yesterday. The 25% deet doesn't do anything either.
-
Last weekend, 5 ticks. This weekend 2 ticks. They crawl right up my legs treated with Permethrin. What gives ?? I use the aerosol in a spray can, not the liquid.

Even on private property? North side of the parkway... How can they stop you during open season?
-
I saw a deer on Mt. Misery Rd at a friends house. He has 4 acres. Can I hunt there during bow season? It's Suffolk county, but right on the boarder of Nassau ?

Does anyone have experience with the NRA insurance? Is it a scam type policy, or the real deal.
