  1. I can't disagree more. I really believe it has nothing to do with them not knowing the safe way to do things. sitting in a class will not fix it. It really has more to do with the culture of being safe and increasing the penalties for being unsafe. We run into the same issue in construction. you can have a tool blx talk about a specific topic and not a few hours later find guys doing just what you told them not to. Fire them and it gets their attention. Start hammering these clowns in the wollds that do stupid crap and that will change the view of hunting safety...My 2 cents So your the new hunting police man. your armed, he's armed and dangerous. You go out and enforced all the rules, and saftey precautions, and confront all these guys. The problem is you will only find them after they shot someone. My method will hopefully stop them from shooting someone; and maybe waking them up a little bit.
  2. should be state law, Retake the saftey class every 5 years, or don't hunt. or a saftey refresher. It's the only way to weed out the morons.

  4. I saw that rub this past Sat, last weekend of rifle. It was definately fresh. and it wasn't there the weekend before. I would have noticed it. it was right on the trail walking in.
  5. I came across a nice rub. I should post a picture. It was fresh, and dug into the tree pretty good. It was the only rub in the area. Do bucks come back to their rub ? How should I have have hunted that area ? Should I have gone a 100' away and rattled ? or doe bleats from the can ? Will he come back next season ? It was on a walking trail on state land, I was surprised to see it there. Dog scat all over too.
  6. I'd call that Coyote food. or if it were my first, I'd wall mount it.
  7. There is no humor in that. It's 100% true. The pepper spray is pretty effective, more effective than a gun, but nothing stops a grizzly.
  8. I wrote this in another thread. I was hunting private property, and I make out a guy walking across posted land, full camo head to toe. It was just so obvious it was NOT a deer, even at 200 yards in thick laurel. The human form does not resemble a deer, a goat, a dog, or anything else. These people are beyond any words I can choose. Hunting state land is safer. I wear orange, and I know other people are out there, and hopefully other people realize other people are out there too. If I see another hunter, I always WAVE and make eye contact, and tell them which direction I am walking.
  9. I read the entire article; and I commented in another post. WTF, are these people STUPID, or brain dead. They shoot at anything that moves, irregardless what the outline looks like, or if it resembles an animal at all. wasting good air is an understatement. But he took a good shot, hit the kid in the stomach. and they said, the kid shouldn't have taken off his orange hat.

    NJ Bear

How did he get so close the road? Did you ATV him out ? or 10 guys dragged him out ? Dragging a bear is the only reason I would never shot one.
  11. Can you take bear during ML season ? 1 shot, and you better hope yogi runs the other way
  12. The DEC is very clear, and so is the book. YOU CAN NOT FEED WILD LIFE YEAR ROUND. The exception to this is a bird feeder, which must be out of range of big game. There are some other things which are not so clear, but feeding deer is wrong and illegal.
  13. I'll tell you, we hear about it all the time, but I was out in the woods this past weekend, there is no mistaking a deer for anything else. I saw a deer 50 yards away. It was clear as day what it was. Especially when the white tail went up, and he ran away. I saw some orange thing meandering through the woods. real far away through thick cover. Obviously not a deer; although I couldn't see him fully. My most spookiest thing was a guy in full camo walking across our private property about 200 yards out. My first concern was that I would get shot, So I let him continue to walk without disturbing him. Obviously not a deer. I hate to say it, but some people should not own a firearm of any type. If you don't know what your shooting at, a little common sense goes a long way.
  14. dumb question.... but couldn't you just saw it into 2, or 4 sections, hide and all, and drag it out in piece meal ? and let the butcher worry about it ......
  15. The DEC guy Jermery who is active on the internet, should jump in here. This is the guy that reports the deer harvest every year from the DEC.
  16. How about those incense ? I tried them more than once, and they don't work, but now I'm wondering if they are legal ?
  17. they allow 1.5 oz of bear attractant, or bear lure. I can't find any DEC specs on deer... I'd like to hear an official answer.
  18. Whatever remains will be scavenged by coyotes rather quickly. It just seems like a daunting task to do in the field. It will certainly make me think about the terrain I hunt in for next season.
  19. I've watched a guy drag a spike out of zone 3 AR territory. what is one to do ? He said he thought it was bigger.
  20. fracturing. I'm against it. but I don't see much alternative to heat my house, considering I use gas. I still have to research this more. Maybe just using plain water, but I'm sure they would have tried that already.
  21. So I meet this guy who was back at his truck to get his hack saw. He shot a deer, and it ran down a step hill into a gulley. No way he could drag it out. 2-3 men couldn't drag it out he said. Too steep terrain, Deer too big. He said he was skinning it, and quartering it in the field; and then back packing it out. HOLY SH!!T. I'm not sure what I would do. I wouldn't even know how to skin and quarter a deer. Never mind back packing 100lbs out. Sounded like 8 hours worth of work. (No ATV's allowed in area) What would you do ??
  22. I recently took the hunter ed class with my son, so I sat in. "Last shooter to shoot the deer gets the deer. period ended." You shoot him in the lungs, he runs by me, and I shoot him in the foot, it's my deer. I'm not arguing about it when two people are carrying guns, and 1 wants the deer more than the other, but the above is what they taught in the hunter ed class. They also said, suck it up, and give the deer away, cause there are plenty more out there to harvest.
  23. .243 will take any deer, and exit with a hugh wound. bambi won't know the difference.
  24. I saw the biggest bear tracks the other day while deer hunting. Had to be 400lbs. But this property doesn't allow taking bear. so I was happy I never saw yogi.
