that's at least 20% with the unreported harvest.
-
what percentage of the bear population was harvested ?

My favorite is just to throw a bambi steak on the grill and cook it up. 10 minutes later I'm eating. not complicated. nothing difficult. All the roasts, and stew, and back straps, and shanks, etc. too involved. If you have an easy receipes, I'd love to hear them. but it must be easy, and quick !
-
I would do someone more east, like exit 120's................

It's too complex. You need to be a lawyer to get through the fine details. ??? I'll stick to rifle season upstate.

can you imagine not following up a shot on this deer.

Go to huntingnet.com and go into the bow section. there are great writeups on "after the shot". How long to wait. how to track. how not to jump the deer. these guys wait 4 hours or more. their motto, wait it out, a dead deer can't go anywhere, but a bleeding deer can run for miles. -
Good Catch !! One would figure cross bows will be allowed wherever bows are allowed. I still like the idea of a cross bow. I can see myself getting hooked on them real fast.

My friend owns 2 acres in Westchester. Zone 3S, bow only. His house & front yard occupies 1 acre, and the back acre is heavily wooded, and infested with "giant rats". (so he calls them; I tell him they taste good). He chases them away all year long with by throwing tennis balls out his window. He wants me to hunt his property. I'm not a bow hunter, but next year with the new cross bow law, I can get into it. Here is the problem: 1 acre, plenty of deer. If that deer runs more than a few hundred feet with a arrow sticking out it's side, It's off his property, and onto the neighbors, possible across a road or 2, or 3 neighbors down, laying dead at someones back door. This is a residential area, & I would need to drop this deer right in it tracks, period ended. Is this possible with a cross bow ? The hunting program is controlled by the local police dept, and they issue permits; and they monitor the program because all the anti hunters out there don't like knocking off a bambi or 2, they want the deer to have a birth control shot instead. So there is no room for error. It must happen correctly, and the deer must drop like it's hit with a .30-06 Any advice besides practicing with a crossbow for weeks. Do you guys generally drop deer, or go tracking them for hours till they bleed out?

That is just what is reported. I often wonder how many more are not reported, due to poaching, or having a doe tag from another area ??

What does one do with a harvested coyote ?
-
no law that says you can not go in the woods 365 days a year.
-
I work 6 days a week. But I would certainly take that first Monday off to hunt.
-
I want opening day to revert back to MONDAY's !!!! Less orange army pressure for the first 6 days.

good to hear he was finished off. But imagine you took him out of his glory, with 7 does !!!

Long Island Gun Season got my drawing number
the blur replied to longislandhunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Are there 10 zillion guys out there like the rumors state?? how does the system work ? Do they give you a specific spot ? -
why do you keep saying the DEC should step in ????? The DEC issues the nusiance permits !!!! (in request to the land owners form submital)
-
I'm surprised he got off a second round after racking the slide. I had 2 doe look at me, and they spooked out immediately.
-
The DEC issues the nusiance permits, no one else. they are usually for doe only. You can jack light, take them off season, bait them, eat them, or donate them. Every farmer does it on the east end of Long Island. many are slaughtered. It's their land owner right. The tag is BIG, like an index card. and when they fill the tag, the DEC gives them another tag. (depending) I don't think they are valid during the real season, so not to interfere with sportsmen. I have no opinion on this matter, just relaying what I know. (as I am sitting here eating venison taken on a nusiance permit )

I got spooked in the woods too. It was windy, very windy. There was a dog barking, and he was barking for a while. And I imagined the barking was getting closer, and closer. maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, who knows. I know there are houses in the area, and they all have big dogs that run loose. But the wind was bad. and being spoked I walked out. Ever since then I decided to carry my side arm in a tactical holster. last day, I felt so much more secure carrying my side arm. coyote, dogs, whatever, I feel better with an extra weapon, and extra mag.

I'd be really impressed if they learned to cross the road. But they still beat me hands down this season. The deer are underfeated. and I lost 5 days.
-
Your friend made a serious mistake. sounded funny = squib load: Rule #1) check barrel to make sure round cleared the barrel, and only then shoot again. He shouldn't have racked the action and attempted another shot until he checked the firearm thoughly. Squibs happen on mass production runs.

I disagree. I recently sat in on the class, because my son was taking it. I did not remember many things from my class 40 years ago: unload gun before crossing fence. what shots are good on a deer: quartering which direction, etc, etc. My son thought head shots would be good, but he learned otherwise. It was worth 6 hours of my 12 hours I spent taking the class. a recurring saftey class will do NO HARM.
