  1. Last shooter gets the deer. DEC law.
  2. Sounds like where I hunt in Zone 3. But I choose option #2: sit home due to the freezing rain, and forecast for rain all day. My life isn't worth it. I have been out in freezing rain before, and it's simply not worth it.
  3. even though I have a blue jacket, the orange vest covers everything except the sleeves. (Which is why I never brought camo) I say 2 mistakes: #1) The doe heard me move. #2) either the amount of orange I had on, or the blue sleeves gave me away immediatly. maybe a breakup orange vest; as I hunt on state land, and won't go in there without orange.
  4. I read that too, eariler this season. No more blue coat, and I have to dump the blue back pack. My flinch caused the doe to look up, which was the first mistake.
  5. Walked in 1 mile on the trail. No deer tracks in the snow coating. Took my usual right turn to my favorite rock; about 100 feet off the trail. put my gun down, take off my back pack. sit on the rock. start to relax. turn my head, 2 DOE are standing where I took my usual right turn 3 MINUTES before !!! (100 feet away) Like they followed me in. My heart is POUNDING. I flinch, (no gun in hand). Big doe hears me. I wear blaze orange vest and orange hat, black ski pants, blue winter jacket. She sees me immediately & stares me down. I'm looking right at her. I slowly reach for my gun. get my scope covers off, and she had enough. both doe bolt off deep into the woods towards posted property. I tried following them a little while later, but the tracks were non-existant in the light coating of powder. They might have been jumping so the tracks were far apart. I couldn't trace them for nothing. That was my excitment for the season. 5 days, and will eat tag soup.
  6. I saw 2 doe today deep in the woods, and I blew the oppurtunity. >
  7. I have seen bunches since opening day... crossing the road. 4-9 deer at a time. none in the woods.
  8. I'm talking about nusiance permits, and you bring in DMAP's. They jack light deer under nusiance permits. and were not taking about marksmenship skill. Were talking about people who shoot at anything that moves, and will not take every precaution of what their target is and beyond.
  9. Are DMAP the same as land owner Nusiance permits ?? Nusiance permits have no rules, except they are DOE Nusiance permits.
  10. I have heard many many times people add FAT to Venison. Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of eating healthy lean deer meat ? I like my arties unclogged, and would NEVER add pork fat or beef fat to any venison recipe. It just means we have to learn to cook it a different way.
  11. Oh contrare mone frare. I can show you pics of nearly 30 deer carcasses I found after season last year alone in a 2 mile area. 30 carcasses within a 2 mile area !! That would indicate gut shots, and hunters not tracking their deer. I believe the DEC estimates the population at a few deer per sq mile.
  12. We all know that are yahoo's out there there shoot at anything "brown is down". No matter what it is, they see movement, they shoot. Guys out there taking head shots, etc, etc. So that would explain why the DEC handles culls them selves; & would not allow hunters near highly populated areas. Nusiance permits allows jack lighting and baiting. and shotguns during off season.
  13. Why would their be a dead deer just lying their ?? The coyote's would scavage it real fast. Sounds fishy to me. I could see finding skin and bones lying around, but never a full carcass.
  14. They can safely let a qualified hunter sit in a stand, so the Trajectory is downwards. However, they would have to futher qualify the hunters to weed out the "brown is down" syndome. They generally allow bow hunters, and sometimes shotguns in those areas.
  15. So what is the DEC logic to cull wildlife themselves, rather than sportsmen ??? who pay for licenses !
  16. Would you consider your hunting luck or skill? I consider mine luck, and I have had BAD luck this season. I tried the bottled scents. I tried the incense. I tried the aresol cans called buck bombs & acorn bombs. I tried calling. E-calls, and mouth calls, and the flip over can type calls. Someone said sitting in a stand is "waiting", not "hunting". I live in the city, so I can't go out and scout pre-season. Can't do trail cams, and I hunt state land. I've been out 4 days already. No luck at all. Do you consider your hunting luck or skill ? & you have to explain it.
  17. You need LAND OWNER permission to hunt on private property. Otherwise you are TRESPASSING.
  18. 1) I feel those nusiance permits should not allow jack lighting. Give us hunters a fair chance rather than the slaughter that goes on; on every farmers property. Hacking off antlers to fill a nuisance doe permit, when it could be a wall hanger for one of us. 2) Fire Island, what is the deal there ? No hunting allowed, but they'll shoot them with darts to prevent pregancy ? WTF. Shelter island, the DEC feeds the deer through these tick eliminator systems that scrub the deer as they walk into the feeder area ??? Something stupid like that I heard. 3) Canadian goose that take down planes. the DEC will cull the geese, and then offer us a very short goose season ??? Why not open goose season always? they are totally out of control !! Someone explain the logic behind some of these thing ?
  19. I saw 9 together just the road. I started blasting my horn so they would turn around and go back into the woods where they belong. Figured road kill won't help any hunters.
  20. Up in VT there is alway snow in the woods. And all the deer and moose will use the snow mobile trails to avoid that very picture.
  21. 2:30pm I leave the woods. Get's spooky out there all alone. I know the deer start moving at 3pm, but it is really worth it? and If I get something at 4pm, sun is going down, I'm not dragging out a deer in the dark.
  22. One guy admitted to pulling a spike out of 3J (AR). Don't know why he was bragging..... or even telling any body. And I'm PO'd because my son could have taken him legally !
