  1. Spine shot just paralyzes them. Doesn't kill them.
  2. That was my natural grunt call.
  3. The best is when I text the deer "Yo..where you at?" and they text me back "Right behind you sucka!". Those damn deer got jokes.
  4. I was hunting the wind once stinking up the joint. I hunt towards the wind completely ignoring my back because whatever was behind me would have sniffed out all the gas I was passing or whatever stink that was coming out of me that day. I kept on hearing noises in that direction and figured it had to be squirrels and chipmunks. After a few minutes I decided to turn around and 30 yards right behind me were two does. They must have saw my head pop out and immediately stopped what they were doing. I held still and they hung around for several minutes and eventually they figured something wasn't right in my direction and decided to walk the other direction. All this scent stuff may work for deep wood deer but I'm not so sure how much it impacts suburban deer. Especially if 200-300 yards away is a house or a highway, etc. [EDIT: By hung around, I meant they went back to what they were doing, checking the ground, etc)]
  5. So Belo, once your freezer is filled, you stop hunting the rest of the season?
  6. My last girlfriend was from Slovakia. If only she wasn't so crazy or a pathological liar.
  7. Some times I read. Either off my phone (browse the web, check my social medias, log into huntingny and see what shawnhu and belo are arguing about this time, etc.) or from a book. I read one paragraph, stop, scan the woods, read the next paragraph. My logic is the time it takes for me to read one paragraph is only a few seconds. If I only had a few seconds to spot a deer and shoot it before it got away, then I never really had a safe, ethical shot to begin with. Other times I close my eyes (again, only for a few seconds at a time) and meditate. In both instances, any little noise makes me stop what I'm doing and scan the woods.
  8. True death occurs when the brain dies. The whole point of any shot is to prevent oxygen flow from reaching the brain. Even a direct heart shot, the brain still lives for a couple of seconds and thus will experience pain even if it's for a very short amount of time. With that said, the brain (especially on a deer) is a small target that is heavily encased in bone thus leaving room for a greater chance of error or deflection.
  9. You can have the south. I'll take British or Eastern European.
  10. I agree. I give myself more leeway by shooting a higher caliber and go for center mass myself as well. I like to challenge myself at the range but I won't play shooting games with an animal's life. That said, I've challenge myself enough at the range that if the head shot is all I got, I am confident enough to take (within my limitations). I think the real problem is when hunters become arrogant and think they can make shots that they really can't. I have no problems with those that do it and can do it. I just have a problem with those who don't put in the practice but think they can do it.

    Hello all

    Welcome to the forum.
  13. Sits, stop blaming Early. He's probably a great shot and doesn't even hunt NJ. [Just joking around Early. Don't take offense]
  14. Note that I specifically said "those who toss the rids and/or neck". I, personally, eat everything.
  15. Wait...there was a thread on strippers and you guys didn't call me? That's a direct violation of Article 107 of the Bro Code.
  16. Crime is definitely going to rise for sure. We need to arm ourselves...oh wait...can't.

    Hey Guys!

Welcome to the forum. My same hunting grounds.
  18. I'd go with the .308 especially since you're new to hunting. If you've never killed anything before then range time means nothing. It's one thing to shoot paper targets while sitting comfortably on a bench. It's another entirely different thing to shoot while you're cold and freezing the last 4 hours, your butt is sore from all the sitting, deer shows up, your heart starts pounding, legs get weak, your hands start to shake, 20 million thoughts start running through your head, you're leaning forward and shooting down because the deer is down at a ravine, etc. Then talk to me about sub-MOAs at 200 yards. I'd say get a few notches under your belt before you should feel confident with the .223.
  19. Isn't taste subjective? Those who toss the ribs and/or neck is just as wasteful are they not?

    Rifle Hunting

I am assuming that in both scenarios, you're saying the shots you presented is the only shot available. Ideally I would wait till the deer moves into a safer location. Scenario 1, Yes. While double checking the woods in the backdrop. I have pretty good eyes, I'll go from there. This makes a strong case to wear your oranges in gun season. Scenario 2, No. I would pass. I've had other hunters come in to my area and not notice them till they're much closer due to heavy wind before. I guess that's why I don't kill as many deer as some do. I scout and find all my available safe shooting lanes and won't shoot till the deer walks into those lanes. I rather be without deer but with a free conscience, and out of jail.
  21. Will you spot him some cash for the toll?
  22. A trainer training the dog.
