  1. You can use the rifle as a size reference. If that is a Savage 212 then the rifle is 43" to 44" long.

    Broken leg

Damn, that sucks. I hope he heals up well and is off and running again real soon.
  3. Vince, This year is unusually warm. Last year, I saw plenty of action on the very first day (Oct 1st). Last year was the first year since I started hunting where they allow bow hunting on Oct 1st. Before that, bow hunting season didn't start till mid-Oct.

    Scrapes

2.5? I've never seen half a deer before.
  5. User called tech support about their printer not working. I sent one of my guys and he discovered this to be the problem. Apparently you can't print on a ketchup packet.
  6. I guess the better example would be hanging up a college degree that you didn't graduate from.
  7. There sure are people who do but I, personally, don't seem to understand it. Winning is the accomplishment. Not the medal that's giving to the winner. It's like showing off a medal that you didn't win.
  8. I'm just saying for the officers to do their jobs, they need to check. Its one way they'll know who is a poacher and who isn't. The reverse side of that is having someone poach a deer and threw it in the back of their truck. Drives right by a DEC officer and the DEC officers lets him go because he had to assume it was a roadkill the guy picked up. It's just funny how people in general are always for officers stopping criminals and frisking them but throw a major fit when they get stopped and frisked. I guess they feel cops are suppose to have a sixth sense that'll tell them who is a criminal and who isn't 100% of the time. If I'm stuck in a cabin with 10 people and one of us is a killer, by all means, frisk me. Cops stop random people all the time and that's how they catch a lot of people. It works. It really sucks when you're the guy they happen to stop. Years ago, Mayor Gulliani wanted to stop all the squeegee men (those random homeless people who come by and wash your window while you're at a red light and then ask for "donations"). Technically what they were doing wasn't illegal so they decided to charge them all for J-walking which is technically illegal but so petty that no one ever gets a ticket for it. Turns out, a large number of those squeegee men they stopped had outstanding warrants against them and many cold cases were solved that way. If stopping 10 random hunters and I happen to be one of those 10 but will lead to a poacher being removed, I'm not going to argue with that.
  9. How would you suppose they catch poachers? Maybe pull people over and check their trunks for antlers? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  10. Let's get scientific here. My bow is rated at 305 feet/second but that peak performance in a lab. I chronoed my arrows at actually only travelling around 210 feet/second. A deer at 25 yard means they're 75 feet away. If I shot my arrow at a deer at 75 feet away, my arrow will reach it in 0.357 seconds. The deer won't react until it hears my bow but it won't hear it instantly. It has to wait till the sound wave to reach its ear. Sound travels at 1,126 feet/second. It'll get to the deer in 0.067 seconds which means my arrow will have a slight head start. 0.357 minus 0.067 means the deer has 0.290 seconds from when it hears my bow go off till my arrow reaches it. When the deer hears the bow, it still has to tell its muscles to move. Unfortunately brain waves moves at a ridiculous speed. 115,197 feet/second. The ear drum has to send a signal to the brain (mere inches), the brain has to process it and send a signal to its muscles (2 to 4 feet?). Brain waves will cover 4 feet in 0.0000347 which is such a small figure that it isn't worth factoring since it'll make little difference. So now, the question is how much can the deer move in 0.290 seconds? University of Manchester recently did a research on the force of a punch. They used professional boxer Ricky Hatton as an subject. They clocked his fastest punch at 32 miles per hour which is almost as fast as a deer can run. That's 46.933 feet per second. In 0.290 seconds, Hatton's punch would have travelled 13.6 feet. Plenty of time to dodge an arrow completely. Two factors that are not considered in this calculation that will slow the deer down. One, how quickly will the brain process the noise as a sign of danger. It will definitely process the information a lot faster if it was on high alert. Two, the calculation of how fast Hatton's punch is travelling as well as the top speed of a running deer is based on their top max speed. They don't go from 0 to 32 mile per hour instantly. It takes time to accelerate. But a deer doesn't have to travel 13.6 feet to evade an arrow. Some times it just has to move a few inches. Something to consider.
  11. The grass in most places are a lot taller than the past recent years which makes it tough for hunters without dogs and even hunters with dogs. I was walking through the corn with corn starks towering over me, even if a bird jump I wouldn't be able to shoot it because when I looked up I can't even see sky. I see corn. Last couple of years were not that tough.
  12. Each land you own you have to pay property taxes on. So being able to afford a bunch of different property means being able to pay a bunch of taxes which me to be financially well off. Is being financially well off a good plan? Sure is. You could lease those lands to help off set the taxes, then you'll have to just deal with the hassle of people on you property. I say so with some sarcasm. But all kidding aside, it's some things that should be considered when buying property. It is why so many lottery winners go bankrupt so quickly. They come across quick money, drop it all on some multi-million dollar mansion and fancy sports cars, and totally forget that there are annual upkeep cost for these items.
  13. I'm sure it'll eventually pop out once he rubs again or spares with another buck.
  14. At least you're getting shots. The last 3 times out I had a shot on deer (does twice and a spike once). One busted me when I was drawing my bow, second one I waited for a better shot that never came, and third one bust be me after I had drawn my bow but she saw me turn because she was slightly behind me.
  15. Wow. very sad. I hunt Stewart a lot the last few years.
  16. Tons of squirrels and chipmunks but no deer. =( Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  17. You're close enough to Blue Mountain. Why don't you head there? If you have 2 pins, sight one at 20 and one at 30.
  18. Congrats! Man, you're going to be spoiled from now on. Ha!
  19. No booby traps? This was upstate NY. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/marijuana-grower-killed-booby-trap-article-1.1444173
  20. Seems like there are some people who are all for promoting hunting and introducing the younger generation so as long as it doesn't interfere with their own hunting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  21. Sometimes I read a thread on tapatalk then later on when I check the computer, that thread is still marked as unread. Little minor bugs. Overall it's a great app.
  22. For a second there, I thought you had forgotten your reading glasses. That had me laughing. Keep the jokes coming, Eddie!
  23. Are we about to start another upstate versus downstate argument?
  24. Went several times. Not on DEP land though. It's fun. Always went in a 2 man team though so we can shine multiple areas/direction.
