  1. When I had Lasiks done they also fixed the astigmatism.
  2. It's called astigmatism. I had it once. Fortunately for me I had it on my non-dominant eye and it was mild so it didn't effect my over all vision much which allowed me to use contacts. Not as rare as you think. A lot of people has it but might not even notice it. It's only when the irregularity of the curvature is significant is when people realize they even have it.
  3. My most used apps: Facebook Instagram (I mean what's the point of having a smartphone if I can't show the world what I had for dinner last night?) Shazam Words With Friends Dictionary.com (see Words With Friends...shhh...I don't cheat, I swear!) Yahoo! Fantasy Football Sunrise & Sunset Flashlight Tapatalk ConvertBot (for measurement conversion) Convert (for currency conversion when I travel) Find Friends (Use to use Google Latitude but they shut that down. Good tool is hunting with a partner, you can see where they are via GPS relative to where you are on a map)
  4. That state land you're talking about in Orange County shared with NJ is most likely Sterling Forest. You need a permit for that park. Simply fill out the form and mail it in or go to their park office and get it the same day. No guns allowed in Sterling prior to November 1st. http://nysparks.com/regions/attachments/2013-14HuntingPermitApplicationforSterlingForestStatePark.pdf The other 2 that are near NJ borders is Pochuck and Huckleberry Ridge. I've never been to those 2 so I can't tell you much about them. Good luck.
  5. So with a 10 yard pin he should be aiming dead on but with a 20 yard pin he should be aiming low? Not trying to be sarcastic here. I've been hunting on the ground but I'm really thinking about going back to the tree stand this weekend since I've gotten busted the last few times. I don't have a 10 yard pin set so I'll be using a 20 yard pin. A close proximity, I should put my 20 yard pin under where I want the arrow to go?
  6. Haven't tried in from a tree. So if on a tree, a deer 3-5 yards I should actually want to put the 20 yard pin below my intended target? Interesting.
  7. I hunt there a few times. Steep mountain climb going in from where parking is available. Didn't see anything at all. Had two hikers walk through in the middle of gun season with no orange on at all. Haven't gone back since. This was like 2 years ago.
  8. No, from level ground. I use the Bear Charge. it's 2-3 years old.
  9. I've never tried 3-5 yards. I aim maybe an inch or two above the bullseye with my 20 yard pin at 10 yards and pretty much hit bulls eye all the time. Haven't tried it in a while but I think that's pretty much where my 30 yard pin would be.
  10. Aim high if you're using your 20 yard pin. Your arrow starting point is below your sight. If you are shooting something right in front of you, your arrows will hit below where your sight is at. The arrow is rising upwards in it's flight at usually reaches it's peak height at 20 yards (how most people have their bows setup). After 20 yards is when the arrow starts to drop and starts come back down. You can also do what phade suggested which is using your 30 or 40 pins. Edit: Didn't realize you use a 10 yard pin. I actually don't use a 10 yard pin.
  11. Welcome to NYC and welcome to the forum. Once you leave the sportsman's paradise you're obviously going to be some what disappointed with the hunting most anywhere else you go. Still, crowded as it might be, there are lands you can hunt near NYC. Check DEP Watershed lands. Also go to DEC website and download their GoogleMap plugins to get state land listings. Each parcel of land has their own separate rules on top of any state and county rules so if you're not sure, call DEC to double-check. For example, some lands out in Long Island which should be close to you have a check-in system. I live in the Bronx so I don't really hunt Long Island. I usually head up to Westchester, Putnam, or Orange county.
  12. 3-5 yards I would have just clenched my buck nighthawk hunting knife with my teeth and jumped down on the deer while yelling Tarzan noises. Just kidding with you. It happens. I shot a nice tree this weekend. You'll get 'em next time. BTW, at 3-5 yards you have to aim high because your arrow starts out under your sight and is still rising to the pin.
  13. I've been in similar situation before. A friend of mine's boss owns property in PA and him and his buddies tag out within a week out there. Laugh at me when they listen to my stories as if they're some master hunter and I'm some bumbling idiot. Offered to take me out there and show me how to "really hunt". My view on it is if someone does all the leg work (scouting, patterning, etc) for you, it doesn't take much to do nothing but pull a trigger. Outside of DEC and NYS state laws, you hunt with your own set of rules. I rather hunt on my own terms. Sure, chasing deer on public land has been really frustrating. I've been busted so many times, had small game hunter walk right through where we had set up a push, etc. but it makes my successes all that more satisfying and rewarding. Knowing that you did all the work from start to finish makes it truly your success.
  14. Now that's a healthy rack! Congratz!
  15. After talking to a couple of other hunters it is believed someone nearby was walking their dogs by setting them loose in the area. This is DEP land. I have to check to rule book but I'm pretty sure that's not allowed either. One of the hunters I bumped into was telling me how he was in his stand yesterday late afternoon and 3 dogs came running by barking up a storm. Either way, disrupted the deer pattern, I'm sure. Still ran into a few deer though. But no good shots.
  16. Nothing this morning. Heard people ran dogs through here the other day bow hunting. Most likely messed up the deer pattern. Is running dog on deer to bow hunt even legal? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  17. Welcome to hunting and the forum. I hunt all over Westchester, Putnam, and Orange county.
  18. You're the weirdest NYer I know. Chiefs, Red Sox, Michigan Wolverines?
  19. Sounds like my season so far.
  20. Been there twice. One of my favorite places to visit. In that particular picture I was there for a friends destination wedding. A lot of lady-boys there. For some reason, they seem to congregate towards me....hmmm...don't know why. Edit: Also, screen name was a nickname I was given when pledging a fraternity back in college. I bought the tickle-me elmo doll as a Christmas gift for my niece and the bros found it and viola! I was given the name and it stuck ever since.
