  1. Hahaha...yeah, that's bad. I recorded last nights episode but haven't gotten to watching it yet. I was watching the previous episode with my fiance the other night when Marty's snow mobile broke down and he had to walk 10 miles in the snow to get back to his cabin. My fiance asked "those camera men must be real jerks. can't they offer him a ride instead of making him walk?" I said "I'm pretty sure they gave him a ride after they got enough footage to make it look dramatic enough...heck, it wouldn't even surprise me if the snowmobile didn't even break down but instead it was staged."
  2. What would be a cool factor of 10? A photon-phaser?
  3. Makes me wonder...for personal defense in bear country, you should have at least a 338. How about 60 rounds of 223? Would that take out a charging bear? Hmmm...
  4. Then you also have parents who think it's okay to leave a 2 year old locked in a car in the sun while she hammers back a few tequilas. Yes, this did just happen not too long ago. It's always one idiot who screws it up for the rest of us. These idiots aren't going to amount to anything anyway so let's just get rid of them. Sorry...that's just me ranting.
  5. Very good article. I actually read her book. Not really fond of it actually but she did make some points in it. I would recommend "The Mindful Carnivore" instead if you ever felt you have to "defend" a hunters way of life against anti-hunters. In my opinion, any at least half of the anti-hunters would be receptive towards hunting if they all read that book.
  6. Only said the 45-70 drops at long ranges. Didn't say it was a bad gun. As a matter of fact, I really want to get myself the Marlin Guide Gun in the near future. Been reading a couple of books on ballistics and the 45-70 is awesome round when used within it's range.
  7. 308 Yes. But if you look at the trajectory table for the 45-70, it starts dropping like crazy after 150 yards.
  8. Welcome to the site.
  9. Anthony Bourdain has the best job. Adam Richmond ended up quiting. Now he does a semi spin-off called "Man vs Food: Naiton" where he goes around just like the old show but they get someone else to do the food challenge and Adam coaches them Rocky V style. Eventually all that eating caught up with him is my guess.
  10. Only lever action I know that's not tube fed is the Browning BLR. Again, something worth considering when deciding between bolt versus lever.
  11. Also worth noting...I believe you can't use ballistic tips on a lever action while with a bolt action, you can pretty much use anything. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe modern bullets now allow ballistic tips on tube feeds?
  12. I've talked to few people who are new to shooting and/or hunting. Every single one of them seem to fall in love with bigger and further. I guess from watching too many movies and playing too many video games. I betcha if money was not an issue, they would try to hunt deer with a .50 BMG or a .338 Lapua Magnum. I'll be completely honest, I was the same way though the most recoil I've shot so far is the 7mm rem mag which is a touch harder than the 30-06. After going into the woods a few times and spending some time at the range, that macho bravado is now gone. I also realized that it's going to be rare for me to shoot beyond 200 yards. I actually prefer rimfires and the 223 when at the range. I enjoy the challenge of trying to get a pin point accurate shot without much over kill. I use 308 during big game season though.
  13. That's just the wrong attitude to have. No caliber replaces accuracy. I'm not shooting 1 inch groups out to 300 yards either but I know what I can shoot accurately and stick to those limits. With that said, a larger caliber will be harder for you to get use to and as a result, harder for you to shoot accurately in the beginning. Whatever caliber or gun you choose, practice the heck out of it. 30-30 lever action works. So does a .270 or .308 bolt. Bubba has a great idea as well. Single shots forces you to focus on your shot.
  14. I shoot 100 grs...otherwise this sounds like a sweet deal.
  15. Haha...I hear you bkln. The idea was first planted in my head when I went to college in Michigan and over there, pretty much everyone hunts. I tried tossing the idea to a few of my friends but we never acted on it. That's was like 15 years ago.
  16. Makes a lot of sense. To really simulate any possible scenerio, I'm going to have to try that with a peanut butter sandwich between my teeth, a cellphone wedge between my shoulder and ear, and a thermos full of coffee held between my legs, while bobbing back and forth from holding in my pee for an hour. Seriously though, I'm thinking of going up a few pounds. I think I may be able to draw more than what I'm at now.
  17. If you never mentioned there was a cat, I would have never noticed him/her.
  18. The way they talk about bears, you would think this is their third season living there instead of 30th. Also, when the dog runs outside, they feared for it because "a bear was less than 50 yards away the last time" but he opens the door without a rifle in hand. You know why he wasn't really afraid of a bear at that moment? Because there happens to be a film crew standing outside pointing a camera right back at them the whole time.
  19. There was an episode when he was in the Dominican Republic going down a jungle river and scaling down a waterfall. A co-worker of mine who is from DR recognized the area and said that it was a national park and right behind the water fall was a concrete walkway with hand rails. In otherwords, he was not remote. I don't have as much of an issue of him taking extra safety precautions is he's showing something educational but instead, he does a lot of stuff you should NOT do. He takes a ton of unnecessary "risks" just to make the show entertaining. For example, some many times he'll wander into a cave or tunnel system with nothing but a torch during a survival situation. In real life, if you were alone in a survival situation and you wandered deep into a tunnel system with nothing but a torch and the torch goes out you're as good as dead.
  20. Congratulations! Keep in mind that the realtor gets some cut of the sale so the realtor always works for the seller. They want you to buy. I also gave it the 7-10 years before I move on. I've just entered my 6th year and it doesn't look like I'm moving out any time soon. Unfortunately for me, I bought when the market was still high. It took me a little over a year to find my place. They said you'll know which one will be your home when you see it and they were right. The moment I saw my place I knew I had to have it. I should have done more investigating because it turned out that my place has a lot of hidden problems but I still would have bought it if I knew before hand. I would have just talked it down even more.
  21. I also missed the first one but have it set on the DVR now. Pretty much all reality shows are rigged in some way. My fiance watches the Kardashians and I make fun of her because some staff on the inside leaked out that they script some of the stuff they talk about on the show. I use to watch Bear Grylles all the time but then I found out they script his stuff too. He never really sleeps in the woods, they fly him out to a hotel and then they return a different day to re-film and edit it to look as if it's the next day, etc. I always figured how much danger could he be in if there's a team of camera men right next to him. I think the only one that's real is Les Stroud's Survival Man series.
  22. By lose of habitat due to agriculture and the fact that farmers use tons of insecticide, traps, and varmint hunting to protect their crops, vegetarians (unless they grow their own produce) indirectly kill more animals than hunters do. Scientist said that if the entire population of planet earth all became pure vegetarians, there would not even be enough agricultural land on the planet to feed everyone.
  23. That deer grew up in the 70's when afro's was the hair style of choice.
