I have fun hunting during the day, but night hunts are what I really like to do. Just something about a pair of glowing eyes bounding toward you in the dark while the sound of a dying animal plays on an e-caller that gets the blood pumping!

Again, punishment needs to fit the crime. Speeding isnt a horrible act. How many kid touchers live amongst us? We cant even kill those sick *****s, or toss them in prison for life, but you want to fine someone a third or quarter of a years pay for driving a few miles an hour over the speed limit? Lets start locking people in the gulag.

I never said you did. The title of the thread is that NY is the worst and there have been a few replies in here that read like NY is some kind of unique criminal playground when it comes to deer hunting.

So you forget to check a box on a tag and you lose your license for life? Really? We set rapists and murders free after a few years on good behavior, and you want to hand out a lifetime punishment for tagging a deer wrong? I think the fines are pretty low right now, but increases need to be kept relative to the crimes. Get caught jacking deer the first time? Suspension for x years. Get caught twice? Lifetime loss. Illegally using another persons tag? Suspension the first time, then longer the second, lifetime loss after the third. Maybe start fining the people that are allowing others to use their tags as well as fining the person using it? That might make people think twice about allowing others to use their tags. The options are endless really, but ust going for an extremely harsh penalty right out of the gate for most things, makes about as much sense as no penalties at all.

If the servers are making $15 an hour, their tips are gonna go down or away all together. The reason I tip is because I know those people dont make much for their base pay. They will end up losing in the end.

You guys dont think people use their wife or girlfriends tags in other states? Please. NY is not unique for illegal activities.

I use mouth calls and have an E-Caller. Used FoxPros and Flextone Echos. For a decoy I have a Mojo critter. I have used turkey calls and had them come in as well. If youre going to call at night, youll need a decent light. I use a Cyclops Sirius rechargable led light. It works pretty well. Just a word of advice though, if you really have a problem with yotes and want to knock the numbers down, youll need to trap them.

So...no more guesses on this one then? This one is a 4 1/2. Its the buck I called Hooks, and he was killed opening day of gun this year. I have pics of him as a 2 1/2 from 2 years ago. He has a very distinct curved brow tine on the left side that has been there since he was 2. When I first checked and saw the first 2 pics, I thought it was a young deer too, until I really started looking at him. Ive had a few guys pick him off at 4 from the pics, but most say 2 or 3. I even had one guy see the first two pics and say "eh, not bad" then saw the third and go gaga over it.

You guys can say bull to whatever you want, but the facts are what they are. Shorter seasons, etc might lead to "better" hunting, but we will never be Iowa, Ohio, etc. Certain portions of the state may come close, because those areas have better soil conditions, but there are other factors. Hunting pressure, number of hunters, the land is broken into relatively small parcels, farms being broken up, overly mature woods, the DEC does squat for land management, etc. Even if we change the things that we can, and do exactly what those other states do, the majority of NY will never come close. Then lets add in that, as has been said, trophy bucks arent everyones idea of good hunting. Im more picky than some about what I shoot, but who am I to tell someone that the things I value about hunting are the same things they should value about hunting? Ill talk to them and point out the benefits, and why I believe them to be benefits, plus Ill point them in the right direction for information, then just leave it at that and they can decide for themselves if its important to them or not. Im not into shoving my agenda down anyones throat.

I started one of those today. I didnt have an encounter with this buck, but one of the guys I hunt with did when he was hunting with his daughter. The cam is 15 yards from the stand they were in. She couldnt get a shot at him. Im pretty sure after looking at the pics a bunch that he is most likely 3. His chest is just way too big for 2.

I assure you, its the same buck. The last pic is from a 3 shot series , but is the best body pic from that set. Im looking for more pics of this guy, I know I have some more somewhere. Once I end up unblocking the rack youll see its the same deer.

As far as the original post goes, its a bummer to lose a deer, but put yourself in the person who found it's shoes. You find a dead buck, take the rack and now some guy comes to you claiming they shot it, and wants the rack. If it was me, Id be happy to give it to that person if they could provide some actual proof that they shot the deer. Otherwise, its not gonna happen.
