  1. At least they stopped that guy, I saw this one on Mt Read Blvd in Rochester last week or the week before. Fantail, you werent out this way were you?
  2. Hopefully this one doesnt get out of hand, the original post was nothing like the other thread was.
  3. Saw another buck get hit tonight on my way home. 4 or 6 point got blasted by an SUV that hardly had time to slow down in a 55 zone. SUV was more than likely totaled. I saw 4 fresh ones this morning that werent laying there last night, and a ton of fresh ones from over the weekend on my way to work. They are moving like crazy now.
  4. The LEM Backwoods breakfast mix is the mix I use for my breakfast sausage. My Brats and Breakfast sausages came out great, but my other concoction needs some fine tuning. Its a Red Wine mix and I tried using ground cloves, which came out ok, but I am going to replace the cloves with Coriander next time. I would like to get the 5 or 15lb stuffer LEM has, but Ill wait and see if I can get a better deal on it. Maybe Ill even find a used one cuz Im a cheap ass.
  5. We have been having a pretty good lightning storm going for a couple hours. I cant remember the last time we had lightning in November up here.
  6. Just one thing about it, the Sharpie marker will eventually wear off. I have an old, cheap blaze vest that I wanted to break the outline up on, so I did it with a Sharpie. Its fine, but I have to touch it up each year, as the black fades pretty fast.
  7. Could have just been an off couple of days. They will be back.
  8. Its a safe bet to assume its the rut and all other bets are off. Id stay on the does, the big boys will probably show up at some point.
  9. Hmmm, that doesnt even sound close to right to me. I had my first ever buck cross the line from state land to private and die on the landowner's property. That guy put his tag on the deer and dragged it away with a DEC officer watching. The DEC officer could do nothing about it once the guy refused to let me take the deer.
  10. Nice! Gonna have some of my sausage for dinner tonight as well!
  11. Where are their ethics!!! You shouldnt be driving around with a kill strapped to the roof, its just not tasteful!!!!
  12. Yep, you can get an out of state non-resident carry permit from some states. Utah is the easiest to get from what I have heard. Ive been meaning to get mine for years, just havent gotten around to it.
  13. Depending on the stand, I sometimes like to still hunt my way in, especially if its a set location stand, like a hang on or ladder. If its my climber, I sometimes like to get in there in the dark so Im all set up by the time it gets light. It really depends on what I feel like doing that day.
  14. Personally, I was disappointed there were just all head shots and no Texas Heart Shots!
  15. On the shelves. If you go to the one on Hylan Dr, they are in the meat section on a shelf just above the cooler thats opposite the wall o meat right near the butcher case.
  16. Instead of being mad that someone else got the deer, be happy for them. Congrats to your buddy.
  17. I wonder if 4 or 5 pieces of carpet layered would do the trick. I could build 2 frames easy enough, put the 5 layers of carpet in between them and run bolts through to keep them held together. Hmmmm...
  18. Im thinking of setting up an archery range in the basement for shooting during the winter months. I am almost certain I can get 20 yards from one end to the other, but I have to measure. Anyway, I will need some sort of backstop to put behind the target(s) so if there is a miss, the arrow doesnt hit the wall and break or ricochet in an unwanted direction. What do you think would make a good backstop? I am not going to pile some hay bales down there lol. I thought I remembered someone posting about having a short range in their basement in the past.
  19. Yeah it was off for me too last year with the exception of him predicting it was going to be a trickle rut, or kind of slow and dragged out. I never really noticed the usual flurry of activity I see most years. Could have just been that I wasnt in the woods for it though.
  20. 2 with the bow, one I know survived and one I am not sure. Both times I did all I could to find the deer. 2 with the gun. The first one was shot just minutes later by another hunter, who put it on the ground and was able to claim it. The second was a nick on a deer last year that I know for a fact survived. I tracked that deer for 2 days before I gave up. I ended up seeing him once last year after that and found his tracks through the winter and spring. Saw a pic of him not too long ago from earlier this season. **EDIT** Make that 3 with the gun. My first ever buck crossed a property line off of state land and died 50 feet onto the neighboring property. Landowner denied access and kept it for himself. DEC could not get him to let me take the deer. I was 17 at the time and was devastated, didnt hunt the rest of the season that year.
  21. I rewatched the episode of D&DH with Charles Alsheimer's rut predictions for this year, and I have to say, at least in my area, so far, he hit it on the nose. He said that 3 days prior to the rutting moon, we would see an increase in activity, mostly at night, but one sign would be that we would see a bunch of bucks getting hit on the roads. I can say that last week, I saw 10+ freshly hit bucks on the sides of the roads. I have also noticed a bunch of doe freshly hit on the roads in the last 3 days, including 4 new ones in a 10 mile stretch this morning, which makes sense according to his predictions. According to the prediction, now through this Sunday or next Monday is the time that the chasing is going to be at its peak. For the next 7 days after that will be peak breeding time. It will be interesting to see how the activity plays out in the next 2 weeks. Im not a huge believer in any of the prediction models, but find it fun to see what people say and then see if it holds true.
  22. I can honestly say that I dont believe I have ever found a dead deer that I can 100% for sure say was killed with a bow. I have found plenty of them with bullet holes. It does bother me when people dont make every effort to find the deer they have shot, even if they believe it was a non-fatal wound. I shot a deer high my second year out, knew it was over the spine and that she would live, but still spent the rest of that day looking just in case, saw her a week or so later healing up. This year I made a shot on a deer, couldnt find blood or the arrow but spent almost an entire day searching for any sign, and went home feeling sick. I cant explain that shot other than I must have pulled it a bit and I hope that he survived. Misses, hitting branches and mistakes happen, hell you might not be able to track a deer through due to not gaining permission to go on the land that the deer went on, but you owe it to the animal to do your best to take an ethical shot and do everything you can to find it. Same goes for gun hunting. IMO, This subject should be directed at all hunters, not just bow or gun hunters.
