Ive been trying to find it on the website. They talked about it in Haleys hunters ed course, and I know Ive seen it somewhere else before as well. Its in their field dressing how to section if you can find that. I always leave that junk attached to any buck I take, always have, as thats what I was told during my hunters ed class many many moons ago.
-
Yes, they went over it during Haleys hunters ed course that I sat through with her a few years ago.

You have to leave a buck's twig and berries attached when you field dress it and take the whole animal out. Why wouldnt you in this case?
-
You need sex organs, theres no wanton waste laws here, so no requirement about what meat you take. Tag has to be attached to the animal, not the cooler, so Id just zip tie it around a lower leg or the head if youre taking that. Figure out which region you are in, and email the office directly. That usually gets you better info that emailing the general DEC address. If that doesnt work, call one of your local Encon officers, their contact info is available on the DEC website.

Deleted the continued argument. Next one to keep it going gets a time out. I asked nicely once, I wont again. -
Plowing Started
WNYBuckHunter replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I agree, lets leave the arguing out of this thread, if you want to argue, start a new thread for it. Yesterday I had some time to walk down through the back woods, and marked out the trees I need to drop so I can get my tractor into the plot areas. With the clearing being at the bottom of our hill, I was worried they would be too wet to plow, but they are just fine. This coming weekend, Im going to get the chainsaw out and get the trees down, then I have to get a brush hog in there. I would like to get in there soon, as I want to get the plots plowed for the first time, and I want to plant some rows of pumpkins on the edges of the plots. Not knowing how rocky this place is yet, Im going to forgo the tiller, and do them with a plow and disc this year. I have my eye on a nice little 2 bottom plow that I know has been for sale for quite a while. Should be perfect for my tractor and the size of these plots. Still havent been able to find a deal on a disc though, everyone seems to ask an arm and a leg for any old equipment they dig out of a hedgerow. One bonus down there, I discovered an old well. I need to look at it and see if the lines, pump and wiring is still in there and in usable condition. It would be great to take my generator down there and use the well when I need water to spray or irrigate during a dry year. -
I dont have any trail cam pics of them yet, as my cams are all in for the time being. Ive seen a bunch of them though.

Haleys first deer rifle
WNYBuckHunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Thats one that Im planning to have her try in it. I use Fusions in my 308 and have been more than happy with the performance. We didnt have a chance to shoot yesterday, so we will sight it in this coming weekend. -

I finally Had some extra time tonight and mounted up a Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 with a Leupold base and Weaver Grand Slam rings. Tomorrow we’re gonna pick up a few boxes of ammo and get it sighted in. She wants to get out after chucks next weekend at the farm. -
Cool looking rack. I wont run anyone down that chooses to hunt in a fence unless they tru and pass it off as free range. My girlfriends uncle has a farm/ranch. The bucks are kept in 2 or 3 acre pens until they are 1 1/2. Only 1 person deals with them while they are in there, and let me tell you, they are as skiddish as wild deer. If you get within 200 yards of the pen, they are high tailing it to get out of sight. After that, they go to the ranch, and live there until they die or are killed by someone. Inside the ranch fence is basically like most other hunting properties. Theres lots of brush, thick woods, thin woods, a swamp, food plots, etc. The deer act just like wild deer in there, only difference is they have a limited range and better genetics. They eat pretty much the same food as most other deer in the area, except they use mineral licks and whatnot, which you cant do in the wild in this state. In any case, a "hunt" there isnt that simple, hell they have some red stag in there that nobody saw from late spring until early winter, and they are bigger than a whitetail. They also have bucks pop up each year that were born in the ranch, and they have no idea what they will become. I dont know that I would ever do a deer hunt behind a fence like that, Im positive I wouldnt pay for one. Maybe hogs or something, where it was a more fun way to get some pork in the freezer. They actually just had their first white buck born this spring. Hes a cute little guy.

I do mine pretty much like TurkeyFeathers said, except I dont put anything in the crock pot except a little watered down BBQ sauce (not too much), plus I wet mop the shoulder a few times while smoking it.

I use a mix of commercial Gly (Roundup) and 2-4d that I get from one of the local farmers. That mix will kill anything. You just have to make sure it has at least 24 hours after you spray it before it rains., and dont use it in any wind or breeze, the mist will end up on areas you dont want to kill.

The fields are rotated out around here. They are planted for a couple of years and then left fallow for a few years. It creates all kinds of great habitat for different game. Now if they would just do selective logging as well, they might have a fairly good program going, and the land would be great for hunting (not that its currently horrible).

There are alot of state lands that get farmed by local farmers. One of them near me told me how the process works, but I dont remember exactly anymore. I know that the DEC tells them what years they can plant, etc. I didnt know the actual DEC did any farming of the land, maybe the farmer just had it parked there for some reason.

My daughter's turkey gun is a Mossy 500 20ga. Its small, light and real easy on the shoulder. Her and I each killed a bird with it this year. She shoots 3" HEVI-Shot triple beard with the factory choke. 40 yards is entirely doable with the gun. If/when I buy a dedicated turkey gun, it will be a 20.

AR10 308 - would you be satisfied?
WNYBuckHunter replied to moog5050's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
A guy your size should be able to handle 50 BMG with no brake. You got ripped off. Brakes are for short little guys like me. -

A brake, of course. Just for that, Im bringing my VTR over to make up for it -

I second bobs comment. Get that thing in a proper rest, and play with bullet weights. That gun will do better than even that last group. Last AR10 I had experience with, punched cloverleafs all day long off of a solid rest. You got a decent group out of it, plenty good enough for hunting, but you ought to do some fine tuning if you want to get the most out of it. -
Yeah the carp are grass carp, Im keeping an eye on the vegitation, as I read that for the size pond we have, there should only be 1 in there. I may need to take one out. Maybe Ill keep the gills out then.
-
Id say its about 1/2 acre or so, and from what I was told, its 15 feet deep, but I have yet to confirm that. Yeah the property is awesome, theres just alot to do, as the previous owners were old and most of the gardens and landscaping has to be completely redone. Plus I have alot to do to get the tractor down to food plot areas, etc etc.

I was thinking about doing that. I would like to know whats going on in there. So far I know we have bass, perch and a couple of big grass carp. I was planning on stocking bluegill and crappie as well. I caught all 3 of them on the same thing I was using for bass, a wacky rigged Senko, so the hook was too big for any small fish.
