Hi All, We've picked up a few decent sheds here and there. Was thinking of making a coat or hat rack or something. Any suggestions on how to go about that? I'm pretty "handy" and have plenty of tools, just coming up short in trying to think of a good way to mount these things. TIA, j

Life member here. The best range bags I've purchased have been via the NRA store. Seemingly indestructible. Kinda like Harley - the branded products are very good.

This made my day.

In case anyone is interested, here is the relevant NY statute: NY -Environmental Conservation Law 11-0103 11-0110. Interference with lawful taking of wildlife prohibited.1. As used in this section "wildlife" means wild game and all otheranimal life existing in a wild state, including fish, shellfish andcrustacea, and "process of taking", in addition to any act described insubdivision thirteen of section 11-0103 of this article, includestravel, camping, and other acts preparatory to taking, which occur onlands or waters upon which the affected person has the right orprivilege to take such wildlife.2. I think it's fair to call these people domestic terrorists, not activists. They are violently interfering with the exercise of basic rights.

Probably the first man she'd ever encountered. LOL.

The AT has become a giant cesspool. Drugs and filth and just clueless jerks. I once had an ambition to do the whole thing (I've done various sections, including two 100 mile-plus hikes). But I have no desire at this point to set foot on it, anywhere (except maybe the 100 Mile Wilderness). I think it would be fun to do the Long Path, or maybe Vermont's Long Trail. Maybe the NPT or New Hampshire's Cohos Trail (I think that would be a real thrill, I'm not even sure it's all finished yet). My preference is to see as few people as possible. I guess I'm just not a very nice person. :/

I'll post some pics soon of my Bear Tamerlane... then we can talk change.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I snuck and shot the thing in my hotel room (suite) last night (don't tell anyone). I brought in my cube from the back of the truck - just used field points. Hard to tell much but it sure seems accurate at 30 feet. Kind of hard to pull the arrow out, though, when it's imbedded all the way to the fletching. Will try The Great Outdoors today if the rain stops long enough. jm

3d. I've got 6 10-22's, the oldest one my dad gave me in the '70's. Most have been built and rebuilt over and over. All kinds of scopes and sights. FWIW, I think Bushnell scopes are junk. (I've got a couple I'll sell cheap if anyone is interested.) At this point, for glass, I will only buy Leupold. Depends on what he wants to do, but for most purposes I think the 4X Leupold is perfect for the 10-22. And then there's the Leupold guarantee... you can't beat it.

Well, I bit the bullet today and bought a crossbow. It's a Killer Instinct Furious Z355. I like the feel of the thing, but haven't been able to shoot it yet (it's been raining lions and elephants nonstop). The shop owner suggested NAP Spitfire XXX broadheads. These things seem like monster killers - 2" cutting diameter. Jeez. My compound broadheads are 1" and I thought that was good. So I guess this is a "did I do good?" post. :/ Any thoughts on this combo? Any experience with these broadheads (any risk of premature deployment)? Any suggestions on good bolts? Tanks, jm

Wow, that's in Dutchess?

My enthusiasm for hunting this year is well not very enthusiastic
jmark replied to rob-c's topic in General Chit Chat
Well, jeez, maybe it's because I've only been at this for a few years now, but I am totally stoked about it this year. My son (who just turned 14) and I got our archery licenses this year, and I have a new bow setup that I love. The boy has had surgery and may not be able to draw a bow in time, but I'm getting him a decent crossbow. We just bought property in Greene County that has deer (and turkey, and bear, etc.), and I'm already in the process of putting in a "shed" (12*24) for us to use as a hunting shack. We both have good rifles, and muzzleloaders. And each got DMP's in nearby units. Never felt better! (Maybe it can be a little contagious?) jm -
Yep. The Dems have 5.7 million registered voters in NY, the Repubs only 2.7. Barry the Betrayer carried NY with 62% in 2008. In 2016, it was 59% Hellary, 36% Trump (and 1.4% for that idiot Jill Stein). It's pretty much hopeless. The better approach would probably be to do what the Californicators are trying to do - break the state in two: South NY and North NY. Draw the line at the norther border of Westchester County. That would fix it.

I haven't dug up the docket sheet or read the pleadings, but from the articles I've read, this is my take on it. The lawsuit seeks an injunction. In order to seek an injunction, you have to allege "irreparable harm". That means, if you are asking the court to order someone to do (or not do) something, you have to show that the issue will not be capable of satisfactory resolution by "mere money." So, for example, you have a beautiful old maple tree on your property, and your neighbor thinks it's on his property, and shows up with a chain saw to cut it down. You ask for an injunction stopping him from doing that. You have to allege that the tree is something that cannot be "replaced" by a money judgment later - it is a fundamental part of your property. So the judge enters the injunction. (You can get a "preliminary injunction", like now, if you can show irreparable harm and then the issue can be fully hashed out later.) So, the NRA wants an injunction blocking Cuomo and his Communist Government from doing all those things. They have to allege irreparable harm. They do so. They claim it is preventing them from doing business, raising funds, etc. The media get ahold of this, and with Joy in Their Demented Hearts, report the The NRA Is Dying. The NRA can't come out and publicly say, "No no no, we're fine, this is just what we have to allege in court to get we need." Cause then, the media (and the Cuomo lawyers) will run to the court and say "See, it was a lie! There's no irreparable harm!" So that's my take. The NRA ain't goin' anywhere.

Thanks for the replies. I definitely use permethrin on clothes that I wear in the woods (hunting and otherwise). It doesn't really have an odor when dried. But the SFR does (has petroleum distillates as inert contents). As for the deet, yeah, I guess that's right - if they smell the deet, they would have smelled me anyway. (Although I use that no-odor spray stuff.)

OK, I'm guessing this must have been dealt with before, but I haven't seen anything on point. So... On my (newly acquired) property in Greene County there is a "creek" (aka a swampy area mostly), and a lot of brush near it. I'm setting up cameras this weekend, but I'm guessing there will be deer (I have 200 acres untouched behind me). I want to do a small amount of clearing, for access, visibility, etc. Was thinking of spraying permethrin (SFR) a few days before heading in with chain saw and machete. Question - does anyone have any thoughts on whether this could deter deer from the immediate area? This is not Sawyers, this is the kind of permethrin mixture used for foliage. Also... I haven't faced this in the past, as I was only shooting rifles, but my son and I now have our bow license. So we'll be starting early (Oct 1, obviously). So, in addition to permethrin treated clothes (in this case, yes, Sawyers), I was thinking we may need to use deet on exposed skin. What is the thinking on whether deet scares off deer? Obviously, we will try to remain downwind. But one doesn't control the wind... Thanks for any help on this. jm

Congrats! I'll be content if I can get the 35. Your post was really kind of touching. You should seriously consider writing a book. I know there are already books. I remember one of the sail circumnavigators once being asked, "What is your ultimate goal?" And he answered, "To be the first person to sail around the world and not write a book about it." But seriously, you have a way with words, which I think is largely because of the heartfelt sincerity you obviously put into them. Great pics, btw! jm

I know. We had a house on Rockport Harbor years ago - before they raised the taxes thru the roof on waterfront property. I never cared for the Wells area. The Boothbays are ok, if you kayak. But it's all a bit touristy. Mid-coast has become just as bad. But yeah, most people, when you say "Maine", think of those areas, or Bar Harbor (eeek!). I recall many years ago, stopping at the (now gone) DeLorme map store in Yarmouth. Picked up a huge map of Maine, dining room table size. Got it home and spread it out (on the dining room table) and had this "wow" moment... the sliver of Maine I knew at the time was a tiny part of the state. There's not much there up in "The County". The logging roads that we went on were pretty rough. And yeah, there are not that many places where you can drive near the Allagash Waterway except on a few access roads, mostly. It is protected under federal and state law, and has a buffer zone. To get on the Waterway, you have to register your trip with the Rangers. But canoeing that waterway (river and lakes) is a magnificent experience. Did it with my son when he was only 11. He wasn't much use as a bow-man - I recall one morning one of our group was asking "who's paddle is this? Miles, is this your paddle?" and someone piped up, "Does it look like it's never been used?" A good laugh. But I assure you he will never forget that trip.

Hell, that's not way up in Maine. Allagash is way up in Maine. Just kidding. I love Moosehead (although it does feel almost "suburban" compared to northern Maine). This is cheating - this is not my setup, although I did partake of that meal. Pic taken on the Allagash River, a few miles south of the Canadian border. We did the Waterway and didn't see a house or an airplane for 7 days. And very few humans (a few moose, though, about two dozen Bald Eagles, and some nice brook trout). I could go there and never return. If I could figure out how to deal with the winters...

Just saw this thread. I've been going to Extreme Archery in Mamaroneck. I work in White Plains and live in Larchmont, so it's more or less on the way in between. Shop is 10 minutes from my house. They have a pretty good stock, and a usable 20 yard range. $20 an hour to shoot, they basically leave you alone to do your thing. I generally find there's only 1 or 2 other people on the range when I go on weekdays after work. Got my archery license there, as did my son. I'm sure there are better shops, bigger ranges, etc., but Extreme is just damn convenient. And I find them quite pleasant. Also bought my bow there - Hoyt PowerMax. He sells Bear, Hoyt, PSE, etc. jm

My dad was state champion of NC and TN in the 1970's. Walked the string and shot barebow against all those who used sights. Made all his own arrows, fletching, etc. He was a great archer. I shot, as well, and had a nice collection of trophies myself. At some point, dad broke down and got himself a compound - a Bear Tamerlane. He still has it (pic attached). He got it out a couple of months ago, and ... couldn't draw it. Broke my heart. A year ago, he was ok. But at 81, it finally caught up with him. His take - get out there and do what you want NOW. Me and the boy'll be doin' just that come Oct 1. Trying to practice a little every day now. jm

We've been using a Redfield and a Konus (my son shoots competitively). The Redfield is 20-60x80, sells for around $350. Redfield is owned by Leupold now. I will only ever buy Leupold optics again at this point. The Konus is also very good, 60 mm objective. For some reason, we fight over the Redfield. I have about a half-dozen cheaper spotting scopes (Bushnell, Barska, etc.). I am a firm believer in going as good as you can afford plus-1 for optics. Nothing like a crappy scope to ruin your day.

I would like to find an original - to me, meaning with all the original parts. I have a German Mauser (K98) from 1944, that my grandfather (NCO Third Army) brought back from WWII (along with a ton of other guns and stuff). It sat in my father's safe until a couple years ago (he's a handgun guy, had no interest). We got it out while my son and I were visiting. It was still covered in cosmoline, including the barrel. Breech untouched. We took it apart and cleaned it up. All numbers match (even has the original the bayonet, sheath and sling). We figured it must have been a new issue at the end of the war, probably never actually carried. My dad gave it to my son. We have fired it maybe 100 times. It's an awesome rifle. I wouldn't sell it for $1 million (well, maybe ). A year or so ago, I picked up an all original Mosin Nagant sniper rifle, 1943 - again, cosmoline, matching numbers, original scope with leather cover, cleaning kit, everything. Like the Mauser, still had all the cosmoline, breech clean as a whistle. All numbers match. That gun is very accurate. First time at 200 yards were able to keep it in the black. This has got us interested in building a collection of historic military rifles. Since the above, we picked a 1903 (not original) and a Spanish Mauser (not original, but original re-issue). It's a lifelong project, that I hope my son will continue when I'm gone.
