  1. Headed out to hunt with my best friend tomorrow. We are going to a piece of land where he killed a small doe today. He saw 5 other does and a really nice 8 point. I've never been there before, but the muzzleloader is clean and I have 2 tags. We'll see! On a related note, the GF asked me tonight if I was getting up "at the ass crack of dawn" to get over there. She also sort of asked if I was staying until I killed something. It wasn't really a question, more of a statement. 7 more days to get it done. Oh boy.
  2. So sorry for your loss Jdubs. 16 years is a good run, and still way too soon.
  3. So sorry for your loss Mowin. They fill our hearts so full that they eventually break.
  4. Sweet pics! I sometimes catch them at my bird feeder at night. The only time I've seen one in daylight was when I cut a huge maple with a hollow spot in it. They really are unique creatures.
  5. good to hear Saranac brewed a good beer for a change instead of their usual coyote whizz I still miss their black and tan.
  6. Here it is protected from development, but it is payed for with tax payer money. That make it no longer private, so it cannot legally be posted. At least that is my understanding.
  7. I can see why you're pizzed. Sounds like an ammo issue. On the other hand, I know a gun shop owner who has had to send back a half dozen brand-new Remingtons over the past few years. Not just one model either.
  8. The family farm is 220. I hunt 12 acres at my Mom's. I have access to 90 behind my grandfather's. I have permission on another 90 acre property that my brother hays for an out-of-state guy. I need to go to the town clerk's office. I hear rumors that the very rich guy that bought the top of the mountain has sold his land to the land trust. That would mean it could no longer be legally posted. That would open up 440 acres and give me a spot where I could actually attempt to track.
  9. This forum gives me hours of entertainment, different viewpoints and a sense of comradery. Someday, I may even hunt in NY!
  10. Since it's ML season here, I am sitting out the rain day. I walked 2.5 miles yesterday in 18-20" of snow. Not much for fresh tracks. Some made their way across posters, others were chased by coyotes. I came out for an hour for a quick sandwich, then went back out to sit for the PM. I got lazy and climbed in my ladder stand to get out of the snow. I saw 6 behind the neighbor's posters, then 4 on our side. Unfortunately, they were over 200 yards away. Too far for me and the smokepole. Taking today off. We'll see what half an inch of rain does to the snow pack. I'm not done yet...
  11. I hope it does happen for you. You sure put in your time (along with Bionic) and deserve it, in my mind. And just think of all the good EATS!
  12. Shotgun zone? Probably not a bad shot to pass. Good luck TF. Give it the FULL SEND.
  13. That's using the ol' noggin'. Hope it pays off for you. Just got off the phone with my best friend. He lives near my family's farm, where I hunt. He's going to give me a snow report. Can't remember the last time I hunted with anyone, but we're thinking about walking a few spots together next week. We both make our own schedules and both have doe tags, so mid-week could get mighty interesting.
  14. I grew up on a farm, so for years I was lost without a tractor. Bought a used L3000 three years ago. I'm impressed with it, considering I never ran a tractor smaller than 50HP until now. I have actually had dreams about loading a buck in the bucket. If I shoot one back home at the farm, I will need my brother's 90HP New Holland to haul it out. Congrats to your dad. Memories like that are priceless.
  15. Good job Tree Dad! Get it done quick and load him up in the Kubota. Is that an L series?
  16. We'll see. Season starts back up on Saturday. I plan to head over on Friday and take a look around. I have two spots that are close to the road, close to my grandfather's house and close to eachother. I will check those and make a decision. I will probably just posthole around and see if they are moving at all.
  17. They got 14-18" of snow at the farm today. I am planning on hunting with the muzzleloader this weekend. Going to be tough going, but I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet.
  18. I would argue that Remington's quality has suffered over recent years. I would also be willing to bet that the 700 would not outshoot the Ruger. I could be wrong. I know a bunch of coyote hunters who own the Ruger in .22-250 and they are very accurate out to 300-400 yards. I agree about the Savage. I'm just not sold on anything Remington at this point.
  19. Didn't see a deer here at the house all rifle season. Season closed yesterday, so just now I had 4 does out in my strip of brassicas. They only stuck around for a coupe minutes before skirting around both cameras. Deer are amazing.
  20. Vermont rifle season ended yesterday. All I saw over the last 3 days was a fawn and a spike, so I have to eat my tag. You guys/gals in NY are blessed with LONG seasons. I hunted 10 out of the 16 days for a total of 67 hours. I saw 17 deer and only 2 legal bucks. I passed on a little 3 point that didn't weigh 100lbs. The forkhorn I saw was head down and trotting through the brush and I couldn't get a clear enough shot. All in all, not a great season for me. Luckily, I only have to wait until Saturday for our 9 day muzzleloader season to start. I can shoot a buck or doe (but still no spikehorn!) and I'm hoping to do some tracking. I have one in the freezer from bow season, but one more would fill it up nicely. Time to dig out the black powder supplies and do a little shooting.
  21. My GF got home last this afternoon, and we made it to her friend's for turkey and fixin's. Just got back and laid out my gear for the morning. I haven't hunted in 6 days, so I am ready to get back out. Get up around 4am, load up, drive an hour+ and try to sit all day. I have 3 days to get it done... Good luck to everyone. Stay warm(ish).
  22. Happy Thanksgiving Zeke. Congrats on your buck! I am stuck home on house duty. No turkey and no hunting (unless I can whack one Zeke-style) I am thankful for our little place, my dogs, my job and my woodstove. Take care everyone. Enjoy your day. Good luck to all those hunting.
