It does look 10x better. I admire your willingness to experiment on these projects. So much trial and error! -
The battle,over gun rights
stubborn1VT replied to Nomad's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
What force is going to actually come and take your guns? I'm always surprised by the "natural" progression from gun legislation to no guns in one easy step. -
It is late for them to be dropping?

I went for a bit a few days ago. Was still 14" of clear ice, but the shores are breaking up. I don't think a plank is going to be enough soon. -

February thaw. I'm not a big fan of climate change. The shorelines are already going, and the 10 day forecast isn't showing much for freezing temps. Spring is a fine time of year, but I'm not ready yet! The warm up did get the fish moving. It's always good when there is water running down the holes. Supposed to "guide" for my buddy and his son on Tuesday. Here's hoping we can even get out there! -
I get all my new music from the Youtube. I must admit it does a good job of recommending new artists that I will like. I'm into traditional country and Alt-country, not so much Bro country. I went and saw TYLER CHILDERS last night, and thought I would throw his name out there. I feel like great musicians have an authenticity that you can feel right off the bat. Anyhow, Tyler is the real deal. Also: Cody Jinks, Sturgill Simpson, and Turnpike Troubadours. A couple other bands that aren't country: Uncle Lucius, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats. What about you?

I don't have one. I had friends that grew up with one. They never had an electric or gas stove to cook on while their mom was alive. I have always kind of wanted one, but I'm not sure it would fit into my life in a practical way. They are neat as heck IMO though.

I hear ya Larry. Not very nice of me. Just something that came to mind when I read Nomad's post. (Not to throw him under the bus.) It's funny where ya'll draw the line when it comes to acceptable humor.

Would you plant this crab apple?
stubborn1VT replied to Blue Hill's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I live in a 5A, but mostly hunt in a 4B. Not looking to plant anything exotic, just some disease resistant varieties. Leaning toward Jona Free, Grimes Golden and Whitney crab this year. Planted Enterprise, Liberty and Freedom last year. Planted Empire and Honeycrisp the year before. Stark Brothers didn't send my entire order. I had to call them and get a refund. Then one of the trees died, which happens. It just seems like I got more tree for my money from Tractor Supply. Stark Brothers does have a good end of season sale though, so I may give them one more shot. -

I hope this painting finds its way into many a thread this year. Priceless! -

I tried some air layering on a number of apple trees last year. I had one root successfully out of 24 attempts. Not very good results. I plan to try again this spring with a few tweaks, but I'm definitely ordering some trees from a nursery as well. I wasn't thrilled with my experience Stark Brothers, so I guess I will be researching others in the Northeast. -
Running a saw with a prosthetic arm. That is BA right there!

In my experience they like birch just fine. They also aren't browsing soft maple. They are spending time in a deer yard across the road. Low deer density, and very little snow cover. I think there is just lots of food then can get to since we haven't had deep snow.

I fish in North Hero mostly. Never fished Isle La Motte. The bays are really protected, and there is no edges, so it doesn't break up in the wind. I was on 16-18" of ice. The fish will come in closer to spring. It's still pretty early. I never fish deep water. Seems like too much work to chase them around. I stick close to the weeds in shallow water, and do pretty well. -
Just takes a little practice. I can clean one pike, or a dozen smaller fish. I grill salmon or striped bass, but don't care for other fish grilled. My girlfriend wants her fish fried, so that's how I do it.

I checked on an area where I stacked a bunch of tops for the deer. They rabbits have been after them hard, but the deer have not. They must have other food, because they haven't touched the maple, yellow and white birch tops I left for them.

I fish in the Champlain Islands. The bays there are like ponds, but they are attached to big water. I'm not a big perch fisherman, but I get after the flat fish pretty hard. I was in 7' of water. I went back the following day and got them again. I got a 7,8, & 10 lb northern and 3/4 of a bucket of bluegills. Should have fished today... the weather forecast looks lousy. -
I filleted 2 pike yesterday. A 5 pounder and an 8 pounder. I'll put some in a chowder and fry the rest. They are very fine eating if you get the bones out. We did a blind taste test at fish camp one year, and nobody could tell the fried pike from the fried walleye. I keep a couple every winter. I think all fish are better when they come out of COLD water. Also, I wouldn't bother with a pike under 5 pounds. Too much work for what you get, unless you have alot of practice getting the "Y" bones out.

I miss my digital camera. It came up missing when we cleaned up the house before Christmas. Fished my favorite bay on Champlain today. Got a half bucket of really nice bluegills, a dozen decent perch, a bunch of largemouth, and a 36" pike that weighed 12 lbs! I put the big girl back, but kept a 6 lb northern that got hooked in the gills. I'm tempted to head back in the morning!
