  1. So I've got permission from the wife to start looking for a new dog. I really want a purebred hunting breed or if someone knows of a decent mix that will do well as both. I dont care if it comes from a champion blood line but it has to be a family pet first hunter second. So I've got it narrowed down to a handful of breeds: golden retriever, basset hound, springer spaniel, lab, and a beagle(which my wife doesn't want). We dont want a huge dog looking at small/medium size. The one I keep looking at the most is a springer spaniel my wifes sister knows a local breeder so that helps also. It was the basset at one point but the drooling has me a little hesitant and there stubbornness. Like I said main purpose is family dog first then hopefully try and get it trained to hunt grouse and maybe rabbits. I know theres a thread on hunting dogs just figured I would make my own. To get some help figuring it out. Thanks for the input.
  2. 4 of us are looking to go to Ohio next year for a week. We just arent sure what time of year. Looking to do a DIY public land hunt. Not sure what section of the state yet. We are still working out the details. Its probably going to be the first week.
  3. Looks like my week project will be done today or early tomorrow so it looks I will be taking my 16gauge out for some bunnies and grouse Wednesday.
  4. Good luck theres 4 of us planning on heading out there next year for a DIY hunt on public land.
  5. Nice gun. My favorite gun is my grandpa's westernfield 16gauge pump. I love that gun i wish more 16s were around I would buy another one and use that over my 20 during gun season.
  6. Up early as usual. Figured ide finally take a picture of our tree. Hanging out watching Christmas Story until the family wakes up. Merry Christmas.
  7. My dad was my hunting mentor. I used to always wait to get home from school on opening day of gun to hear about his day. Loved hearing his stories of his Adirondack bear hunts. He only harvested 2 bucks in his hunting career. Not for lack of trying but he wouldnt buy a good gun for himself and put his money towards the family first. Even sacrificed his only 8pt so I had a set of rattling horns which i used to rattle in my 3pt. Also making sure I had a great gun to start with a savage 270. He showed me how to read the woods and taught me very young to enjoy the woods and the time I have in them. To make memories with the ones I hunt with because they will last longer then remembering the deer I take. When I was a teenager he got out of deer hunting not by choice just work and 4 kids. His big hunting love was grouse which is what got me into it as well and why I make sure I go a couple times a year. Him working so hard allowed me the opportunity to hunt as much as I could. So I asked my mom to dig out some pictures. I took my first deer and deer with a bow a little 3pt,and my first gun/stateland buck a little spike. The skull caps were busted so I cut them off found a muzzy broadhead which is what I used for my first bow kill, and a 270 round I had laying around. Glued them all to the barn board box I got from walmart. On the back will have the tags from my biggest bucks with a note on it as well. He was diagnosed with dementia last year at 58yrs old and is going down hill fast which is killing me inside so I try to keep him involved in my hunting as much as possible.
  8. You would think after all these years but apparently I like risking my life a little.
  9. Date on first pictures wrong. It was the Saturday after thanksgiving.
  10. Not vintage but my first 2 bucks. 3 point with a bow and 1st deer ever. Spike is first gun buck and 1st stateland buck. I was 17 with my bow and 18 with the gun. The flannel in the gun picture was my grandfathers also wore it when I shot him.
  11. Congrats to those that filled tags today and the entire season. Alot of nice deer taken this year as usual. You guys/gals that can still deer hunt down state keep knocking them down. Time for some small game hunting. Shotguns all cleaned up and ready to go.
  12. Dont do what I did. Walked in sunday after my last hunt looked at my wife and said 10 more months until bow. I thought she was going to hit me with my own bow. I keep up on house work all week so it's one less thing she has to worry about. Also make sure I take her christmas shopping and out to dinner at least 3 times during the season.
  13. Off topic wasn't there a thread for posting pictures of your first deer? My mom just dropped off some picture and my first gun and bow buck pictures are in the pile.
  14. Well I have an update. I was told over the weekend someone trespassed onto either the private land property I hunt or the neighbouring property and shot him. I guess hes been down at the local bar bragging how he trespassed and shot it. Sounds like it was on the neighbor's property because hes looking for blood. I guess hes dealt with the same guy before doing the same type of stuff in the past.
  15. Well they beat me. Done for the year the chase was challenging this year but fun. Very grateful for my 8pt during bow. Missed a buck during gun on the run and almost had a chance yesterday. It was a successful enough season for me. There will be changes as normal for next year but not worrying about that now. As of right now my groups total on the entire year Bow: 2 bucks,1 doe Gun: 5 does Ml: 1 buck 2 bucks on stateland, 2 does on stateland so pretty typical year for us.
