  1. Hunted 3N (Putnam County – Shotgun) today. Got into my spot sitting against a big tree by 545am. Was watching a valley with heavy pines to my left. Literally did not move except blinking my eyes and moving my head only slowly. At 735am, I spotted a spike that I had a tons of trail cam pics of this year. Could have shot the spike easily, but decided to pass. As I was watching him through my bincos at about 40-50yards, I caught movement behind him. The deer behind him was a decent 4 pointer. The 4 pointer spotted me watching the spike and didn’t follow the spike. Instead this 4pt stood there trying to figure out was I was. I kept trying to get a good look at this 4pointer to see if there were any other points. Was hoping for a 6+ today. As me and the 4 pointer competed in a stare down at about 50 yards, the spike went down the hill and out of sight. Then to my right I heard snorting/wheezing. Figuring it was a doe, I took a peak anyway. Spotted a deer and then saw it pick its head up and I saw antlers. It was a 3 pointer. This buck was about 50 yards to my right. I sat between to these two bucks for about 2 more minutes until they both ran downhill right into the valley in front of me. I thought they were going to spar or something, but they didn’t. They met up about 60 yards in front of me. I put the scope on each of them and pretended to shoot each of them several times. I decided I was going to pass on these guys. Then the 3 pointer sprinted into the pine trees to the left, as the 4pt followed, I felt a little regret. Wondering if this might be the biggest buck I see this year. The 4pt made a turn right at the pines and headed back up alone to my left. I decided that I would take this buck if and only if I give me a nice easy shot, no tracking, etc. Well sure enough it stopped 35 yards away looking right at me, slightly quartering towards me. I aimed and hit him right where I wanted. He dropped and it was over. This is my 7th career whitetail buck and my 6th from NY. I have now shot 5 whitetail bucks in the last 6 seasons in NY. Today was the 5 year anniversary of my biggest NY whitetail, an 8pt on 11/17/07, also opening day. I also have another 4, 1 3pt, and 2 spikes. Maybe someday I will become more patient. My dad met up with me after I killed my deer and he informed me that he saw the same 4pt at about 715am and passed him up. He stayed out till dark and didn’t see any other deer. It’s been an amazing 6-7 weeks for me. From October 1st till today, I have killed my first antelope, my first mule deer, my first mt. lion, my first 2 gray fox, and now this 4 pointer. I have 2 DMP tags, but I don’t care to shoot a doe. I’ll be back on December 10th for a buck with my crossbow. I might go out before then and watch my Dad. 2 years in a row with the heart shot for me. Set my trail camera up to watch the gut pile.

I don't bowhunt. Shotgun during gun season. Crossbow during late ml/bow season.

You should hunt dark to dark tomorrow. A lot of guys will leave the woods at around 10-11am and they will kick deer up for sure. Then 2-3pm hunters will come back and again kick deer up. Definitely stay still and quiet all day long. I'll be hunting dark to dark saturday and sunday less than 10 miles away from you.

If you are going to LWood, you better get there by like 4-5am for a spot. There are only 2-3 spots, I heard it fills up quick. I never hunted it opening weekend.
  6. Yea, Good Luck to all! Remember to take pics afield. The ole' back of the truck pic looks horrible!
  7. Nice, this year I am packing a trail cam in my bookbag. If I get a deer, I will setup cam to watch the gut pile.

No, you can't. But you still got a couple of hours! Stop looking down at your phone and look at the buck 30 yards away from you! SHOOT!
  9. How do you not have pictures of this deer? who shoots a piebald and takes no pics?
  10. You shot an 8point piebald buck and didnt take any good pics? What the?
  11. He uses the 9MM for hunting, but that doesn't mean he ever got something with it!
  12. Sounds like this Larry's operation is horrible. Everybody should just boycott this guy and he will go out of business.

    Bobcat!

Lynx and Bobcat are pretty different looking in my opinion. Here are pictures of each. The Lynx has totally different paws. They are like boxing gloves. The Lynx stands much taller as well. The Bobcat was 35lbs from Maine. The Lynx although much bigger looking was only like 24lbs from British Columbia. Maybe alive and only getting a quick look at them could be tough, but once dead you would be able to tell the difference very easily. I am going on Bobcat hunt in Minnesota this winter, and a Lynx hunt next winter in British Columbia.
  14. No clue. But do you have any pics of his rack? Great buck.
  15. Thats why I always hunt dark to dark. When all the primadonna's leave the woods at 10am, they kick up all the deer. When they come back in at 2-3pm, they kick up all the deer again. Many years 10am-2pm is the primetime to see the most deer. The best is watching flashlights from a distance and guys make their way into woods on opening day at 7am when its already shooting time! I'll be in my spot, on the ground, against a big tree at 545am. Waiting the hour in silence till the season begins.
  16. Good Luck man. LWood will be packed tomorrow with the orange army. Be careful!
  17. Awesome, congrats! What style mount did you pick?
  18. If you got free access to hunt deer and can shoot deer in NY, thendon't buy anything in NY. Spend your $ and buy in NJ or CT or PA. Then you can extend your season and shoot more bucks per year. Or spend the $ on hunting trips instead. I thought about buying cheap land in upstate NY, but then I realized I'd only be using it for hunting anyway. Even $30K will you get at least 5-6 awesome hunting trips outside of NY.
  19. make sure the room is big enought to fit several life-size mounts of different critters.
  20. I'll be out in Putnam (Shotgun) with my Dad. It will be my 12th staight opening day, it will be his 43rd straight opening day.
  21. I love it when the DEC is at the local butcher near me inspecting teeth for age of deer as they come in. Then they see corn in the teeth of the deer and ask the the hunter where they got this deer. The hunter's freeze up, and are then asked to take the DEC to the kill spot. Bait Pile is found!
  22. Oh ok. I guess I never seen it. He should come hunt state land in Putnam County on opening day without orange. I wear tons of orange and I am hunting private land!
