  1. +1! Don't be afraid to wear orange! I hunt with an orange vest and hat. I even used to have orange hunting pants as well until I gre out of them. I still shot deer in my orange head-to-toe outfit.
  2. What unit did you get that spike?
  3. I know that. But knowing the difference between 2 3/4" and 3"? damn thats some pretty good eyes.
  4. You shot a spike in PA? Doesn't all of PA have AR's?
  5. I know. I just shot him. Thanks for all in the info in allowing me to harvest this big buck.
  6. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that deer grosses over 100"
  7. Damn, thats too bad. Westchester has tons of great bucks. Wish I could hunt there with the crossbow. Good Luck man! I'll be out Saturday in Putnam.
  8. If you have the supplies already, its free. But if you have to buy $20 worth of supplies you might as well buy a cheap target at Dick's or Flying Arrow Sports (Carmel). I got a really small cheap one that I use to de-cock my crossbow when hunting. It was like $15 or $20 from Flying Arrow. Its small and light. I bring it into the edge of the woods with me and shoot it on the way out to de-cock.
  9. I hope so! It's very possible. Last year they were. Here are my notes from last year from 3N: http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/7274-biz-r-oworld-2011-ny-deer-journal/ Opening Day, Saturday - 11/19/11 Hunted private 8 acres in Carmel, NY (Putnam County - 3N) with my Dad. I got to my spot at 545am. Saw nothing all morning, and met my Dad at 1130am near a stream to eat lunch. Found out he saw nothing as well. In the afternoon we sat about 30 yards from each other. At 3pm, he was motioning me to come over to him and I could read his lips "BOBCAT". I snuck over to my Dad, but it was too late the Bobcat was gone. My Dad could have shot him, but said he wanted me to get one since he already has one from Maine. I wish he had just shot it, he said it was bigger than his 35lber he has mounted. It was the first time he ever seen Bobcat in NY in over 40 years of hunting. At least we are going to Minnesota in December to get me a Bobcat regardless. So I then went back to my spot, and sat. At 418pm I saw a big doe come out of the pines about 25 yards away and I watched her eat along the pines till just about 430pm when she went back into the pines. A few minutes later I heard crashing and a doe and a fawn came running out of the pines at about 40 yards. As I wondered what spooked them, a buck came running out behind them grunting like crazy...He chased the doe and fawn grunted like crazy away from me until they were all out of sight. I grunted 3-4 times trying to stop the buck for a possible shot, but he was so glued into the doe/fawn that nothing stopped him. He was definitely a wide 4, maybe 6. Anyway not a bad first day, shows how sometimes you have to sit all day to see deer in the final minutes. Lastly, also found another huge buck rub, at least 36" from top to bottom. Also heard about 20-25 shots throughout the day. Sunday - 11/20/11 I couldn't hunt due to my final walk-thru before closing on a place on Tuesday morning, and other things I had to take care of. My Dad of course hunted dark to dark, same private 8 acres in Carmel, NY (Putnam County - 3N). Late afternoon just before he dark, he saw a doe come out of the pines and watched for a few minutes and then she left heading back into the pines. My dad then hit the doe bleat call softly twice and out came a buck, he shot this big 7 pointer. Swelled up and neck and just a big deer in general. Pics attached. I think this is the buck that was making the big buck rubs, also attached. Rut is definitely later than normal this year, as we never usually see bucks chasing does while hunting during gun season, but 2 days in a row just before dark it was seen.
  10. When in doubt just blow a little bleat call just before dark and out comes a buck, every other time.
  11. You can buy a cheap target for $20
  12. YORKTOWN — Two deer hunters believed they were being hunted when they wandered onto private property only to have its owners – two brothers – shoot at them, police said today. The incident began Friday afternoon when the two hunters chased an injured deer onto property at 980 Chapman Road then called police after someone fired on them, Lt. Kevin Soravilla said. Officer Mark Rapisarda responded and interviewed the hunters. Further investigation showed that the hunters had wandered onto property owned by Ronald Padovani, 46, of 980 Chapman Road and that he and his brother, Richard Padovani, 45, of 950 Chapman Road, had fired a shotgun and a rifle over the hunters’ heads. “They told us they were shooting over their heads to scare them off,” Soravilla said. The Padovani brothers appeared later Friday at police headquarters, where Rapisarda charged them each with first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony. They were released on $1,500 bail each and are due in Town Court tonight. No one was injured and the hunters were not charged, Soravilla said. Chapman Road is located off Croton Lake Road and is bordered to the north by heavy woods that lead to Turkey Mountain Park.
  13. Personally, I never use scents. I hunt in Putnam County. I sit 30-40 yards from buck rub lines.
  14. Sounds good to me! Will be out there full days on Saturday, Sunday, Thanksgiving (1/2 day), Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
  15. I don't bowhunt, but it is definitely possible. I have walked up on many deer bedded down within 20 yards of me during gun season. I usually sit from dark - 10/11am, and then 2-3pm - dark. The middle of the day I walk around. I take 2-3 steps, stop look & listen, then repeat. A normal 10 minute walk should take 30-40minutes like this. Many times I come across deer just standing there as they must have just stood up. Other times they just lay there thinking I don't see them.

Yup! 65 degrees today, but the weekend looks good for me: Saturday = high 46, low of 31, 6mph wind. Sunny. Sunday = high 47, low of 36, 8 mph wind. Mostly Cloudy.

Plan to be in my spot sitting against a big tree by 6am. Pulling the trigger on a 6+point buck at 650am. At the butcher by 8am. Home by 830am. Posting a report on this site by 9am.
  19. Monster. How far away were you when you took this pic?
  20. elitist attitude? I was just responding to you saying that you went out 37 times in 39 days. Maybe hunting a few full days as opposed to many 2-3hour stints might be better worth it? I don't know. Wasn't trying to offend you or anything. Good luck on getting this monster buck.
