Cross Bows NO Longer Legal In NY
landtracdeerhunter replied to sidewinder's topic in CrossBow Hunting
This state continues axing away at the tree. Sometime, that tree will fall. One had better hope it's notch was place in the right spot. -
Fall Grain Planting
landtracdeerhunter replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Coated the spot with year old manure and got some plowing done yesterday. Soil still came up wet in spots. Going to hit it with the rototiller when right moisture. Hope to get my first oat planting soon. I plant just the common oats seed right out of the combine, as have excellent results for years. Going to post some pics on progression. -
Plowing, fitting ground for wheat and oat planting if it's to wet to cut, bale hay. Otherwise, I will fit in tree stand rehab and placement,as well as a wood stand in need of new location, complete tear down required. A new cardboard stand to be built along with a new step ladder stand, as we approach bow season, 4 short weeks away.

Had to put a temporary fence around my pumpkin patch today. Caught turkeys in pecking holes in them. Last year, they flew over the fence and ate all my tomatoes. The goal was to establish a habitat for the turks, with I have done successfully, LOL.

Good year for apples?
landtracdeerhunter replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Neighbor brought over 2 bushel of early Macs yesterday. They look really good. I always like to make the pink apple sauce out of them. In exchange, I'm going to give him some of our canned pears, as he doesn't like canning, but loves the soft canned pears. This started years ago with us. We do many other neighborly things, as it has become a nice thing to do for each other. -
I can relate to above statements very clearly.

Broadcasting Tiny Seed
landtracdeerhunter replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Should be a settings chart that came with the seeder to tell what number to set limit stop at, according to what type of seed being broadcasted. My 40 year old seeder had the chart stapled to the bottom. I copied off the old and made a new chart, and laminated. My new seeder had a laminated chart come with the seeded. We'll worth the money to invest in a nicer seeder, for the price of the seed, these days. -

We had far more mosquitos this year because of the wet weather, and no mention of West Nile Virus. How many people has that killed in past years?

Fall Grain Planting
landtracdeerhunter replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
On my own experiences, deer tend to favor the young tender oat grasses over the more mature wide leaf early in the season. Later on, say Novemberish, they hit it all hard as the sugars are brought on by the frosts and lite freezes. Two years ago, our growing season went into late October, making the oat plantings good right through Thanksgiving. Several doe hit it hard during breeding time, pulling the bucks, thus giving HAEA. (HUNTERS AN EXTREME ADVANTAGE) Last year, I threw in several acres of radish, which threw the whole equation out of sink. -

Yeh, I stagger plantings on the oats, about 1 acre, now to the 10th, 3 plantings. The wheat will go in on the 5th, or there about, to assure enough top growth. It depends on the length of the growing season, your elevation, and moisture content of the soil. -
Just may get....

Looks good as always. -
Only thing got planted were some pumpkins on the manure pile. Their the size of baskets balls. My garden yielded 50 bales of red clover which I turn into $200. Went to the Batavia farmers market and picked up some beautiful veggies with the doe.

Thanks all. Yeh, that's the 3rd grand baby over 9 lb.. My second Fathers day gift was over 10. My kids keep it up, they're pump out a whole football team, LOL. U know though, they slim right down when they get mobile and stretch out. Joesph, you're right. Was 9 1/2 lber, when they still used counter weights on the scale. Still a big one today, LOL.

Just before a strong thunderstorm hit, he was taken by cesarean section, ( OUCH , don't know how the women do it). Another big boy at 9 lbs. 13 oz, 22 inches long. I'll enjoy him while he's young, but soon will have turkeys flying over his head, as his brother did, Another little hunter. LOL.

Ran a couple through the haybine Friday. Dang things are hiding under the Trefoil that's logged. Fox hitched them up when I got on the other side of the field.

Did Cuomo go by your place on the way back to Albany. Maybe he lifted it for a keep sake back at the cap., for a reminder when he losses the race for governor. Picked one up at the conservation building at the Erie County Fair Saturday. Scope was handing them out as people were walking around with them displaying quite nicely. Now they need to come out with hats and bumper stickers.
