We'll in it's natural state, red clover drops it's seeds in the fall. Think if I seeded it now, I would put some type of grain seed with it. Wheat or rye, or maybe even oats, or a mixture of each. Be a nice draw, come bow-gun season, and would protect the young clover seedlings. The wheat and rye would grow next year, and be a nice feed for wildlife, when mature, but would have to be cut.

Nice to hear things moving forward. Moisture increasing in soil. That will sprout seeds and perk up the plants. Are those pest army worms still with ya?

I torn with the idea of either building a exterior walk in cooler or a root cellar. The average temp of the root cellar is 50 degrees and would only have to be cooled 10 or so degrees for deer storage. Bagging and ice in the cavity would store for a few days. The best part, it cooled naturally. It also could be used for storage of fruits and vegies year round. The only question is how good would the meat be in one?

One would think with all the gun related headlines, Stores that sell ammo are going to be running on alert, if in doubt, don't sell. No doubt, it only stands to get worse in the future.

I got about the same situation as yours on a 1 acre piece. The clover has thinned to a point of question it's effectiveness. Man, this would be a great time for a no-till drill. Have had no luck seeding direct, without tilling, or frost.

One would think, with all the years running, the decals system would have all the bugs out of it. I remember last Nov 1. going for extra dmp tags, guy ahead of me appled for 2 and got 4. They took 2 back, of coarse, but town cleck said system had been doing it all day. What was even worse, was they don't void the extra tags out of the system till the end of day.

Another heads up. Had trouble at 2 local town halls. Said the system wouldn't issue super sportman license. We'll see tomorrow, try again. Remember the first year it ran, system would just go down, for no explained reason.

Did do check over on stands yesterday, touch up, and general testing. Did tree scouting. Tried to figure what Oct. 1st looks like to area concealment. Good leaf stand this year, which, no doubt will hinder. Now know what you Northern zone guys go through, lol.

We use gallon jugs and half paper cartons. Does work great. Wdswtr brings up some very good points in his post. Mid October is usually still quite warm here still.with the old southern opener date. Provisions are in place for an unexpected harvest come Oct. 1. Might even spoil, with a walk in cooler, one more thing on the list, lol.

Well yesterday, got a good look at the Tom, I had been hunting last May. He was with 3 hens and about 9 poults. Little surprised to see him mixed in with the young'ens, in last years wheat clover mix. Hens were picking wheat without jumping. The poults made me chuckle,every time they jumped up to get kernels off the heads. They look so funny with their balancing act.

This morning, taking a stroll,looking up at a permanent stand, I realized that bow season starts in month and a half, give or take. That's 40 some days from now. Decided, now is not the time to get in panic mode. I'm static. Tree stands need prep, not to mention placement, trimming.; Bow hasen't been practiced with, near enough; Food plots, fields need planting, etc, etc, etc.. So behind right now, never will be caught up. Top this all off with a stupid, finger laceration on my release hand. Is anyone else feeling the excitement in the cool air?

To answer some questions, no they don't like rocks, but neither do plows, discs, and other tillage equipment, but other implements are more forgiving than a tiller.They can handle a " few" smaller diameter ones, but don't over due. These tillers are Italian, so they do hold up a little better than some others. I have sold several dozen of these, and don't sell many tines. I do drill into my customer heads, their not excavators.Their slip clutch protected, and that is needed when a rock gets caught in the tines. They do a number on smaller tree roots, grinding them into pieces. Not a grinder for stumps. I'm lucky to have several acres of rock free land. I still plow, disc, and drag-roll my stoney lighter land. My ground has all been tilled before, so it works quite well( many hours of rock pickup time). I have used a tiller for several years now. Doc, I mainly sell these to food plotters. Oh, don't think I'm selling a sale pitch here, just wanted to show how serious into food plots. Think going to have to increase the N, on these plots, being the rot up will use any available up. Going with wheat, oats, seperate areas; sugar beets, turnip, tillage radish mix. Never tried this combo before. Also looking for some carb feeding crop , if anyone has any ideas?

We'll. finally did some tilling. About a month late, but better late then never. Once u get one of these machines, hard to stay out of the field. Usually like to land plow first, then roto twice and good to go. Plow wouldn't go in the ground; to hard, so I'll hit it with the chisel Have to be careful not to over work, turns out as hard as the driveway.

We're still dry. Rototilled 2 acres last night and the dust was flying. Lightning to the north, not enough to chase me out of field. We just got enough to wet the ground at 2 today. It refuses to rain. Figured to get the ground worked to absorb more moisture. Still waiting. Dust bowl anyone?
