  1. A 2 in pump with 5 hp motor will drain that in about 16 hours. I drain my minnow pond ever 2 to 3 years, its only 50 x 70 but 10 ft deep, it takes 8 hours to drain to 1 ft deep. I do it to clean out as many crayfish and minnows, snails, and clams as possible. Siphoning will work but it's much slower.. a couple of pumps with no discharge hose on them will work the fastest, and can run 4 hours or so on a tank.. bigger pumps more gph.. perhaps a combination will work best for you... I'd start buy digging down outflow lower if your having contractor come in and clean his equipment can easily fill back in..
  2. That overgrown field can be great nesting cover.. leave your fields long on fall for nesting in spring. If you have timber growing on edge of field trim some lower limbs off them so birds have easier time to get into them for roosting 2 to 3 in limbs 20 ft in air are great roosting limbs if they have enough clear space above and below them for birds to get in. It's a lot of trimming but it does work and make a difference..
  3. To just shoot? I may let a young one try a bb gun at 7 or 8 but to be given (not kept by but stored by an adult) a gun, Somewhere between the age of 8 and 10, there are always exceptions, but at that age a child can truly understand the dangers of a gun and has the patience to learn and want to shoot. I would start them with a bb gun, a 22 at 10 maybe. If they show aptitude and resposibility.
  4. Hope they don't chew your tires, they love the salt in the rubber, as well as in glue in plywood, sweat on axe handles, and insulation covering wires..
  5. Not the thing you want done to valuable timber trees , but they do have a purpose. By the way they are the only animal a man can run down and club 100% of the time..thats why in wilderness areas they are given a pass as survival food..
  6. By girdling trees they are the loggers of the forest along with beaver, killing tops of pines forcing heavier growth which provides thermal cover as well as protective cover for game, when they girdle hardwood trees they allow light in so new growth can become established, as well as weaken trees so that bugs can infest them ,creating food for woodpeckers, and in turn allowing rot to hollow out trees to allow animal nesting and den cavities.
  7. http://averagehunter.com/12-years-record-book-whitetails/ Interesting article and rankings of states then and now.. I would think with an entire state doing ar's Pennsylvania would be way ahead of New York ... doesn't seem that way... .
  8. Oh I missed a few over the years, usually high. Or because I tried to squeeze a shot thru brush . Happens. .
  9. Well if it was a seperate fish and game department it would be a lot harder to shift monies to enviromental projects from licenses and Robertson putting taxes. Now all thay have to do is write in improve habitat and the money goes to replace boilers in nyc. Tracking funds would be much easier as its one department instead of 50 ..
  10. Trophys are in the eye of the beholder ..period. Then why do we push for antler restrictions? Why push to let younger buck pass? Why pick on some one who shoots a yearling doe or button buck.? Why pick on someone for shooting a bearded hen or a jake? WAKE UP!! IT'S NOT THE ANTI HUNTERS LABELING US IT'S OUR FELLOW SPORTSMAN!!!! Why not someone else hunt our land when we aren't there? Why not let that kid get 1st crack at the game? WHY???? IT'S the peer pressure we feel, it's the well I pay the taxes, it's well they might shoot my deer selfishness .. in the end it's human nature...... Unless an individual consciencely make a decision to allow it. Nothing can be done on a larger scale..
  11. This article is exactly why antler restrictions, on buck only, are all just adjenda by those that want a "trophy" I give credit to dec for not expanding restrictions and catering to the "trophy " mentality. ..
  12. Fines and tag reporting can't happen as there is no guarantee of a season the next year, we do not have the right to hunt and fish and season is contingent on the lawmakers passing it every year. .. just think you do that and now you can't get a tag if you have any out standing debt,or parking ticket, ect.. best Way to manage our game, get the right to hunt and fish in nys constitution to be managed by a game department.. then your monies go toward game amd game management, more ecos, biologists, wildlife staff in general. .. that would be sonething!
  13. Close but no cigar today, one of the biggest toms I've ever seen led me on a chase around the woods as he tended hens, at 730 am he was alone and came in quiet at 40 yards, I waited till he was behind a tree and raised the gun.. doesn't he turn behind the tree ans walk straight up the hill when he pops out he's 65 yards and walking away.... another day I'll catch up to him again..
  14. I shoot.every one I can find, they girdle trees ,which is money out of my pocket in future timber harvest, as well as damaging many more that decreases value and allows rot to enter into the tree. My neighbor has even smoked them out of hollow trees and caught one or two on fire as well..
  15. Put the thighs/legs in a oven cooking bag or can put in slow roaster with cream of mushroom soup at 275. ( 100 degrees lower than a regular bird ) and cook for weight.. makes great turkey Ala king.. Legs are also good ground.. for those who don't use them . Lower temp cooking is key as well as bacon wrap on breasts to help keep moist.. high temps just dry them out. .
  16. I don't have full racks to part with but have some large single shed if those will help .
  17. The hens head would appear redder when excited as it also flushes with blood, a blue gray and hint of red on a hen in spring it's very possible to mistake for a jake, the beard is what you have to look for, almost shot a tom with no beard once, nice spurs full fan , no beard so it wasn't legal had to let it walk.. the brown tipped vs black tipped feathers are only sure way to tell youbg tom from hen. Besides gutting them.. Oh yes hens will strut and gobble as well weirdest thing to see in person!! To the op just check for beard!! That's what is legal, the rest is a bunch of extra stuff you don't need to worry about!!
  18. Legal bird why feel bad, one less to compete with you for a tom, I've seen and taken a couple in the fall. As for the identification of jake or hen.. hen beards tend to be thin (like a pencil) but can be long..a jake beard tends to be thicker and short and stick out strait, I've seen som jakes with 7 in beards that hang but in general they are 3.5 to 5.5 inches and will stick straight out
  19. It would have then this year but your better knocking off to let it put energy into roots 1st year of transplanting
  20. Let fruit set and thin to 4 to 6 inches apart if you want max growth for yourself.. if nit.leave them all but knick some off if limbs have to much weight and stand chance of breaking..
  21. Pouring out now, friends young brother wants to go out, well I guess ill.take him when rain stops..
  22. Can get 20 footers at.sportsman guide cheap, dicks, gander, buy 2 sets and combine most of the time cheaper than buying an extention (just make sure same.lot run), 25 ft is about limit for them unless you buy seperate ladders sections ( rapid rails) I have 7 different kind of sticks, I replaced about all of the straps with ratchets.
  23. Had 7 different birds sound off on the roost tonight after getting in a fight with a couple of barred owls (apparently they didn't like me imitating them) got those gobblers fired up though!!
  24. Had one for years and switched to mammoth style, ( more versitile in hilly terrain and kind of hunting rolls up in bag goes on my belt and never know it's there till I want to set it up.
