Doc , yes I agree and would like to see the seasons split 2 weeks bow, close for 2 weeks , then bow again, close for 5 days amd gun, run for 10 days and close for week reopen for week close 5 days and run muzzloader/ late bow for 10 days. Thus giving deer a chance to calm down aND rest. Especially with the expected increase of harvest during bow due to inclusion of x bow... will never happen but ibwould.like to see it.

Happy Easter! Never forget those overseas!

A proper soil test can be done at you local ag store, but you need to know what you are planting as every plant requires a different amount of nutrition.adding nitrogen to ground your going to plant clover on is a waste as it fixes it's own nitrogen.. As for planting in the oaks ... oak leaves and acorns are very high in tannic acid and you ground will be much lower ph than a grassy srip under the powerlines. It can be done but lime takes awhile to raise ph and leaves keep.falling, let alone if your plant g near a walnut tree where juglan washes off leaves everyone it rains... proper woods planting takes a carefully laid out plan...

I remember the fight against compounds, and how they would ruin the sport and archery season, it passed but no releases were alllowed, then the fight for allowing releases as its a trigger and makes it like a gun!! And how it was going to ruin the sport and archery season. I have no problem with full inclusion of x bow ,with this legislation a bow course will be required. It won't ruin the season or sport. As its a compound on the side.using a release.. yes I know you don't have to draw and hold it ,but what are you holding with 85% let off?? All the x bow hunter I know are bowhunters so I do not see a large increase in hunter numbers. In my opinion the only people who have a gripe are the tradition hunters who lost everything they had. If you use a compound you exactly the same as a x bow hunter to them.

They had to go with the muzzloader stamp for crossbow , as a new licence requires a course, but laws dictate you must have hunted with said implement for 3 years before you can teach a course. So no seperate x box course was possible, putting under muzzleloader circumvented the nys bowhunting lobbiests. It should of been made archery equipment from the get go,this just shows powers of lobbiests .. all for making it archery equipment and the couse teaches responsible shot placement, ranges, tracking and recovery of hemoraging game.. Every x bow hunter I know is a bow hunter. So including in entire season is not going to affect much here locally, having the bow course will eliminate the oh its. Just like a gun so I'll buy it crowd. Overall this is good commonsense legislation!!

It depends how sting you mix it , it will stay as a pre emergent, I would go 2 weeks or longer if it doesn't rain

Yes any farmer / or farm supply worth it's salt will know what it is.
-
2-4 d will kill all your broadleaf and leave your grass alone, it's the same spray they use in the suburbs and charge the homeowner a fortune for.. can get a pint cheap and it will last you 4 years.. Any farm supply store will carry it..mix it a little strong and watch the dandelions turn purple and curl up in a few hours..

Just concentrate on power line for now, before you make any woods plots or Jing cut oe thin woods, learn the property a year or two, learn where pressure come from and where the deer go, it's nice the neighbors don't hunt but people find a way into any woods ,PowerLine old atv trails , had a guy walk the county line a mile to my woods as the piece he entered on wasnt posted..

I've been to deer herd meeting for dec before, most are not well attended unless it's a hot button topic of elimination of a tag, thay seems to get people out of the wood work, I remember 10 or so years ago a meeting in hamburg after a bad hunting season, the place was full. Everyone screaming there are no deer while myself and 2 friends sat quietly as we had tagged out thay year. I try to go when other demands on my time are met and I have time to spare, but there isn't really anything that makes my blood boil about deer management, yes I d like to see full inclusion of crossbow, but I sent my letter in about that, one buck well I read that idea is scrapped for now, same with further antler restrictions... so why would I attend a meeting that really has no topics I'm interested in.

All a kill plot is is a stop a deer may pause at on way to a feeding field

The country hasn't changed, as the Japanese said after ww2 I fear we have awakend a sleeping giant, the same is true of 9/11 before 2 flags flew on my street 2 days after every house had a flag.. now 2 again. Most people just want a tag to go hunt deer at a reasonable price

A little early, ground is pretty cold, unless it's in full sun and spring stays dry, it may rot. You could of over seeded the turnips in the fall in mid to late sept.. giving the plot a double draw in fall, the surviving plants would of brought turkey in in the spring, while providing biomass when plowed under for this year's crop of brassica..
-
PowerLine is easiest to do, spray with a roundup type, (a sprayer on back of atv is best bet. )but PowerLine are also easy access for 4 wheelers and treaspassers. I would.start there though ,spray in spring and summer 4 to 6 weeks apart , so vegetation can rot. And you can kill any re seeding by dormant seeds. (I am assuming you do not have a tractor amd York rake to re move vegetation if you do use it to remove as much dead matter as possible.) I would.plant late July a mix. Of turnip, Daikon radish and a red clover. Top dress with 10 10 10 fert at planting and early sept. The radish will help break up ground as will the turnip so next spring spray again to kill any grasses and wwed that survive you can drag with a pice of chain link fence and or a planker to smooth a seed bed , then you can plant good imperial clover and have a plot thay will last 3 to 7 year with mowing
-
Honestly,I would.plant purple top turnips and imperial whitetail clover.. when the turnips ar done the clover remain and can be over seeded following summer, and give you a great strutting area for turkey in spring.. if you don't have time to replant the clover itself is a great draw

50 plants in the woods? Coon will have that pulled down in milk stage.. the only success I've had with corn is as a feed field minimum of 1 acre..

300 yards long , can't cover that with a bow.. kidney bean shaped plots taking into account sun light being able to hit it for most of day, so east west set up, late Season turnip, brassica, winter wheat, winter rye will be your best draws, though depending on deer population, you may need to over seed with a white clover. This may seem redundant but a WI white clover will out draw about anything I've used.

Pressure is the key for all pot calling, I always hear how you can't make soft calls on a pot, I've made and heard calls so soft on a pot I can barely hear them, strikers and pressure no matter what surface your using. I can run a pot 1 handed with gun up on my knee, and have teased birds the final dew steps that way
-
I have a ceramic in an acrylic pot thay is one of my favorites like it so much I bought a second and they sound completely different.. so remember conditioning (sanding away the surface) will eventually destroy the call as they all have a sweet spot . Use the minimum you need for a life time of use out of the call

Anyone else scouting new ground during the off season?
G-Man replied to genesee_mohican's topic in Deer Hunting
Scout year round wherever I am.. -
Hanging bog/ cranberry hollow or Harwood lake area would.be about an hour from you, both hold plentiful deer and bear. Rock city has bear around as I've driven through the area but I do not know deer hunting , though I would be leary as its close to indian reservation land.. and they tend to wander...
-
Hope it goes thru, would.like to see a archery permit/course needed for it.

Make.sure you Crack oven to let moisture out and.keep eye on it you want it firm but flexible as it will lose more moisture as it cools.. nothing worse than over dried jerkey
