  1. My guess it they are hawthorn as well, produce red or or and or yellow, fruit. Though they are eaten by wildlife I would remove any let the orchard trees grow with out compititon. I'd the original apples were grafted they may have used rootstock that had thorns, I'd remove and cover so it wouldn't grow back. Most heavy producing fruit it from a grafted tree using rootstock that was native to the area, making it more hardy.as the lower root stock is exposed it can sucker and start to grow the original tree, but will not produce the grafted upper portion.
  2. Rebuilding old willys trucks, flint knapping, fishing, wood carving. Reading. Food plotting/hobby farm.
  3. You need good quality color photos ,or extremely close ir ones.. look for a tear in an ear, a off color spot, a blind eye,a hump on the nose, an over bite,or underbite, a 1.5 year old deer is a tough track to follow to 2.5 ,by 2.5 antler caricatures are apparent and can be flooded to 3.5 and older... Spikes and 4 pts are very hard to track as they grow as they can become anything at 2.5 while 6 pts , 8's and sm 10s may be 1.5 and will carry the same rack shape in following years... It's why if a guy wants a buck for meat I'd rather him shoot a spike than the perfect basket 8 thats the same age ,I know the 8 pt will be at least an 8 the next year or bigger , the spike my be a 10 or a spike again.. to many questions with them...
  4. Problem I have is there are a lot of bear around and a .223 with the right bullet for deer is fine, but, it won't work on a bear.. I like a little room for error as much as I pride myself as the best shot in the world, I know things happen...

    dead heads

Found this one, my guess is it was from a road hunter, found 30 yards off open field.visable.from the road, shot head on hit jugular missed spine by 1/4 inch, lots of blood no tracks around and between 2 houses. No attempt to recover I think because it ran to woods behind houses
  6. Many at camp here are Going back to slug guns or large caliber rifles, thick brush and though a bullet can be deflected by anything seems slugs and large slower moving bullets fare better. Personally I think most just aren't comfortable with a bolt and pumps or levers are easier for a quicker 2nd 3 rd or more shot. ( unless the deer is dead ,if it moves it gets 2nd well aimed shot) better to lose 5 lbs of meat than the deer.
  7. The point being if you stopped imports on those consumer products that were made with no emission controls ,the companies would have no choice but to either return to the usa creating jobs, or go out of buisness, or force emission controls to go global to sell its products. Will it sting for a bit yep, but long term jobs, and less pollution will be the outcome
  8. The problem is the dec is not a game department but an enviromental organization that is run by politics with high appointed positions. Monies are used on enviroment al projects that can loosely be tied to game and fish management. Just because permits are issued doesn't mean you need to fill them. Until nys adds an ammendment to it constitution for right to hunt and fish to be governed by game commision, nothing will ever significantly change as political pressure will some day leave us with no seasons at all.
  9. I don't have a problem cleaning up mess in the woods, but I am against crippling an economy to lower emissions further while other countries have no emission controls, I'm all for free trade but why not stop all products coming into our country that come from countries with no emissions, when you match or beat our standards then you can in port to here, then we lower emissions here again and they have to match to import here. A much better idea than lowering our so much company's leave for China and import at lower prices.. thays why I am against environmental emission controls being more and more testrictive.. Don't get me wrong I'm happy water and air here is cleaner, but all the air polluted in China heads this way.. better to cut it off there then kill jobs here..
  10. Good idea if you tell them your looking for wildlife, and not just timber management, most foresters are out to make $$ . Dec can give you input on managing for both.
  11. The biggest problem is the land being sold is valuable farmland and once it's developed it can not go back to farm able land
  12. Idk about huge profits if you factor in years of exorbitant taxes that were paid on. It. As.my father told me if you like the view buy it! Biggest problem is a suburbanite lives on a 60 x120 ft lot, an see a chance to buy 5 acres for the same price as the building lot and does so, then goes and buys his 4 wheelers and snow machines and rides all over 5 aces is nothing .. so the land owners next door who are being trespassed on by the surrounding 3 to 5 acre lots get fed up and sell and that 100 acre piece gets split up into 3 and 5 acre lots, and the cancer continues to spread out further and further into rural areas.... as for the game they adapt to their surroundings we do not and feel compelled to change it, directly or indirectly.
  13. You still need to remove the ground trash, kill off the weeds and it's better to scratch surface... for the money you spend on seed take the time and do it right, try throwing it on a lawn vs bare ground and see for yourself. Good news is you can do all the prep by hand with a sprayer and a rake.
  14. Cut those poplar as low as possible to encourage root suckering, will increase browse for deer and grouse
  15. We were doing our standard drive and one guy shot 2 buck and a doe while pushing.. 2 shots is not enough...lol
  16. Ir pics shrink by 20 inches, color in general are about what you think they are + or - 5in or so
  17. Ir pics always shrink in hand, good color photos are usually pretty close.
  18. Red maple, oak, any time now is good deer will eat all the bud within reach
  19. Had some good down drafts in that area a few years ago took barn roof off and a few cows went missing as well as calf houses, prolly was same storm
  20. Grab a fresh tarsal gland off a fresh road kill if it's not bloody. Can beat it for attracting all deer but will only last a day or two then toss it, I don't use any store bought scent waste of money, and one deer to a bottle? Really millions sold and deer receptive for breeding 24 hours, most is not Esterous scent but is sold that way. Call only id you see a deer out of ranger otherwise just scout!! They more you know thw land and its naTural funnels and deer routes, natural and forced.learn your trees find which ones are dropping nuts or apples what is prefered,do this and The better woodman you will be, and by coincidence a better hunter!
  21. They age meat at 40, it's more than likely fine if it was still.chill to the touch.how old do you think meat just stays on shelf at store a goood week if you check the dates, if it was frozen first it wasn't above 32 too long if if was still cold to touch
  22. You can laugh, had a guy last year on a drive run out of bullets shot 4 x, and deer were still running by him, he did get a doe , missed a buck 2x , and missed another doe, when you find the deer now they are all grouped up for sure, was funny to hear him yell thru the woods"I'm out of bullets!!"
  23. If you have both you have 2 either sex tags, all doe tags and anterless only are valid as well, so if you didn't full any tags yet and had 2 signed over to you , you could shoot 2 buck and 5 doe. (Assuming all tags bought) possibly 7 doe if you hunt in an area you could buy extra tags for 9f for example...
  24. They are all back in their summer ranges hiding from the heat..
